The
Tenku no
Escaflowne Characters
The
Illusory Moon (or Phantom Moon... I'm not quite sure). From the Gaean
skies, the Earth could be seen floating in the sky together with its
moon.

Fifteen-year-old
Japanese high school freshman Hitomi is a spirited star member of
her high school track team. She has a big crush on a national-level
runner on the men's team, Susumu Amano. Her request for a kiss from
Amano (if she can run 100 meters in 13 seconds) sets the story's
chain of events in motion. Hitomi's unique talent for fortune telling,
using a deck tarot card and a rose-colored pendant, given to her
by her grandmother, aid Van and Allen against the Zaibach Empire. |

The homeland
of Van, Merle, and Folken. This place seems to look like a cross between
Korea, Japan and Vietnam. Although its legendary god of protection,
the Escaflowne, is one of Atlantis' ancient Guymelefs, Fanelia is considered
an otherwise unremarkable backwoods country of farmers and townspeople.
|
At the
Gaean equivalent of 15 Earth Years of age, this young warrior
prince ascend to rule over his small kingdon of Fanelia after
the death of his father and the mysterious disappearance of his
older brother. Van is known as a guy of a few words and speaks
up only when nessesary. He also pilots the guymelef "Escaflowne",
which only a member of the Fanelian royal family may operate.
At the beginning of the series, he literally runs into Hitomi,
after being accidentally transported to Earth during his final
initiation before claiming the throne. Hitomi was then transported
back with him.

|
Found
as an infant by Van's mentor, Valgus, Merle has been part of Fanelia's
royal entourge since infancy, and adores her childhood playmate,
Prince Van to the point of bristling with possessiveness at perceived
rival Hitomi's presence One of Gaea's anthropomorphic races, Merle's
race resembles Earth's cats and she often displays a playful catlike
behavior. |
|
Looking
much like a Venice, King Aston established this relatively recent kingdom
from a cluster of formerly unallied towns and villages, transforming
in into a thriving merchant power. Much of Gaea's economy flows through
Asturia due to the splendid bays and canals of its capital.
|
One
of the twelve "Heavenly Knights" of Asturia, who act
as the royal guard for the ruling family, and pilot of the guymelef
"Sheheranzade".
Although he seems very kind, admirable and debonaire, beneith
all that is simmering bitterness and a troubled past with an absent
father, deceased mother, and a long-lost sister. He bears a striking
resemblance to Amano.
|
|
|
The
third princess of Asturia, Millerna has been in love with Allen
since childhood, and despite her studies in medicine and her betrothal
to a local merchant, she defies her father, the king, to accompany
Hitomi and Van's party in their adventures (with her love for Allen
playing no small part in her decision). |
|
Having
much resemblance to the Industrial Revolution-era England, this empire
of Industrial Age-spires and techno-urban sprawl represents its Emperor
Dornkirk's vision of a world united by his Machivelian ambitions and
technological discoveries. From Zaibach, forces of footsoldiers and
Guymelefs march into neighboring countrues in order to seek the keys
that will unleash the power of Atlantis.
|
Wizened
Emperor of Zaibach, Dornkirk oversees the ravaging of the countries
of Gaea in his relentless pursuit of the secrets of the ancients,
who possessed the technology that made Guymelefs possible. The
ultimate goals of his machinations and the reasons for his obsession
are as mysterious as his origins. His age is known to b at least
200 Earth years , and he survives due to an intricate life-support
device, which takes up a huge room in Zaibach's floating fortress.

Dornkirk's
enigmatic strategist, Folken coordinates and carries out Dornkirk's
plans as well as developing new technologies, such as the stealth
cloak used by Zaibach's guymelefs. He is also the long-lost brother
of Van.
|
|
|
Dilandau
commands a loyal elite squad of guymelef soldiers under Folken who
devastate whole kingdoms with their superior guymelef technology.
When scarred in battle, he develops a nearly insane obsession with
defeating Van. |
