It is clear that the Padaung women wore rings because of four reasons.
They are for protection, for prevention, as a myth and that it is beautiful. The
rings, though heavy, do not affect their health or movements. However, it does
affect their voice. The Padaung women talk with an unusual high-pitched voice.
For hygiene purposes, they have to scrub the rings to make sure that infection
of the neck does not occur.
It has become rather common for the women to present themselves to the
foreigners at located places. This in a way has signified that the Padaung is no
more primitive. They have adopted a new way of living – which is to make money
out of tourism; to entertain the curious tourists.
It is certain that this culture is slowly disappearing due to the fact
that more “modern” Padaung girls do not wear rings anymore. In addition, the
‘invasion’ of the external world; the introduction of economic tools, would
slowly change the perception of the Padaungs of their own culture. Will our future generation be able to see this hill tribe again?
