Now, we all know that the Sailormoon series is just perfect the way it is--but I just can't help wishing that some things were a little different. There are lots of times when a certain character gets treated unfairly during the five seasons of Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon... For example, Sailorvenus is said to be the leader of the inner senshi, but she is barely given episodes in which one could see her lead. Another frequent injustice done is to Sailorjupiter, whose attacks and henshin sequences get cut most often. Even the outer senshi are underexposed, in my opinion... only given one season in which they could shine while they devote the rest to less deserving characters! Well, Ami is no exception to these injustices--just take a look at these to see for yourself: Injustice #1: The Tacky Schoolteacher LookIn the anime, why do they have to give dear Ami-chan such tacky and uninteresting outfits which make her prudish compared to the other senshi? We all know that she's a bit of a nerd, and that she's very shy, so she should look low-key. But you can look low-key, at the same time, look cute, too. I guess that the animators don't have enough creativity in creating a look that's cute and coy, but not too sophisticated or loud… And so they deck her out in bland sweater sets and ancient-looking dresses. In the manga, Ami dresses quite in a cute, low-key preppy style that could be sexy in a subtle way. Even if Naoko did dress Ami in something that actually looked fashionable, it befitted Ami's character in a very nice way. She was still this smart, shy girl, who just looked better than the one in the anime. It's not that I would like Ami even more if she dresses better, but it would sure help. After all, most of us watch anime for the art, and I think that the characters' clothes are part of that, too. If you look closely, not only Ami looks cooler in the anime. Just look at Setsuna (Sailorpluto)… In the anime, she keeps wearing that conservative pantsuit, which would really make you wonder if she does want to be a fashion designer. In the manga, though, Setsuna is one of the best dressers among the senshi, definitely a more fitting image for someone who wants to be a fashion designer someday... Injustice #2: Bad Hair SeasonsAmong the senshi in the anime, guess who gets all the bad hair days all the time? None other than poor Ami-chan, whose hair looks as if each and every strand is pasted on! It looks as if it has no body at all (and what's more, it gives one the impression that every strand is shellacked to her head, so it won't move even in the most violent of battle scenes). Of course there are rare episodes wherein her hair just looks perfect... but they are--as I had just said--rare. Just look at her hair in the manga. It's so pretty, and it even looks layered, a far cry from the anime version. Injustice #3: Predictable DeathSailormercury is always one of the first senshi to die, whenever something life-threatening does happen. Why? Why? I share this pet peeve with my cousin Jov, whose favorite is Sailorjupiter. She and Sailormercury are always the first ones to die. Given that she's the weakest offensive senshi, it could be understandable at one time or another, but not all the time! And if she's so great at endurance, why can't they be consistent for a change and make her the survivor? I guess they didn't really consider these things when they let Sailormercury die first during the first season--or when they had Sailormercury and Sailorjupiter's star seeds taken first later on... Uh-huh... unfair of them, ne? I hope you don't think me to be such a nitpicker... it's just that I noticed these things while watching the series and saw that they were partly responsible for why people really don't like Sailormercury that much. ^_^ And also, I'd like to thank dear cuzzie Jov for inspiring me to make this section for my page. I hope you enjoyed it! ^_^ The picture of Ami in a sweater set used to illustrate Injustice #1 is from Dengeki Moon Serenity . Thank you! Please visit her page! |
