Change is constant. It has always been true of life. There's nothing in this world that doesn't change, evolve or grow. Now, with this in mind, could Takeuchi Naoko just have let her precious bishoujo senshi go through their fighting journeys with only one fuku to wear? Of course not! ^_- Throughout the seasons and acts of the anime and manga respectively, Sailormercury has been given various forms of her sailor fuku to fit her growing power and abilities. Why don't we take a look at how the simple manga fuku evolved into the elaborate Sailorstarmercury fuku?

the anime smercury fuku Sailormercury Anime Fuku

The first Sailor fuku I had seen on Sailormercury. This Sailormercury fuku was worn from her debut as a a pretty soldier, all throughout Sailormoon, Sailormoon R and Sailormoon S until she got powered up in Sailormoon SuperS. This fuku features:

  1. A golden tiara with a blue stone set on it, worn on the forehead.
  2. Blue stud earrings, one on each ear.
  3. A blue choker, the same color as that of her skirt and her collar.
  4. A blue sailor collar with two white lines along the edge of her collar.
  5. An ice-blue bow on her chest held in place with a round blue brooch.
  6. Gloves reaching up to the elbow with blue trimming (looks like three blue rings wrapped around her elbow ^^).
  7. A bodice jointed at the bosom, with sleeves that look like three white rings wrapped around her arms.
  8. A really short blue pleated skirt.
  9. An ice blue bow at the back of her costume.
  10. Knee-high blue boots with low, chunky heels and ice-blue trimming on top.

the original smercury manga fuku The Original Sailormercury Manga Fuku

The original is always the best, so they say. Well, the first time Naoko Takeuchi drew Sailormercury, it was in this fuku. Of course, it has its differences with that of the anime fuku. Meanwhile, here is what the manga fuku has to offer:

  1. A golden tiara with a blue stone set on it, worn on the forehead.
  2. Blue stud earrings, three on each ear.
  3. A mini-microphone/reciever, fashioned like those once popularized by Madonna.
  4. A blue choker, the same color as that of her skirt and her collar.
  5. A blue sailor collar with three white lines along the edge of her collar.
  6. An ice-blue bow on her chest held in place with a round blue brooch.
  7. Gloves reaching up to just below the elbow with blue trimming.
  8. A bodice jointed at the bosom, with no sleeves.
  9. A really short blue flowing skirt.
  10. An ice blue bow at the back of her costume.
  11. Knee-high blue boots with low, chunky heels and white trimming on top.

the supersmercury fuku The Supersailormercury Anime Fuku

Sailormoon SuperS marks the advent of the Supersailormercury Fuku. Because it is not much different from the manga version, we are only showing the anime version. (This is also because I don't have a manga picture of Supersailormercury in full view. ^_^) These are the changes it went through from the old fuku:

  1. In the anime, Ami-chan's earrings were upgraded from one on each ear, to three on each! (Thus, it is now even with the manga version).
  2. Her choker has a yellow star in the middle of it.
  3. The two white lines that used to line the edges of her sailor collar have been reduced to one.
  4. Her sleeves have been upgraded: they now look like two white rings wrapped around her arm, with a transparent wing-like sleeve attached to it.
  5. The circular brooch on her original fuku is now heart-shaped.
  6. The bow at the back of her fuku has not changed, except that its tail has been made longer (so that Mercury looks more like Supersailormoon, with frills attached to her skirt).
  7. It just might be this picture, but it seems that along with all of these changes, the chunky, low heels are now stilettos. I don't have confirmation of this, though. ^_^;;;

the sailorstarmercury fuku The Sailorstarmercury Fuku

This is it! The last and final frontier of the evolution of the Sailormercury fuku! Unfortunately, this is just found in the manga, and not in the anime.

  1. Her earrings have also been changed from the three studs on each ear, to a single one with a star dangling from it.
  2. Her choker is now a v-shaped one, with a star in the middle.
  3. Her sleeves are now shiny blue puffs with two rings at the bottom of it.
  4. Her sailor collar has one yellow line along its sides.
  5. Her gloves now reach somewhere between her elbow and her shoulder
  6. The brooch on her bow is star-shaped as well (do you get the idea why she's called Sailorstarmercury? ^_^)
  7. Her fuku, which used to be jointed at the chest part, is now contoured.
  8. Her waist is now adorned with two ribbons with a star in the middle, and these ribbons run down from the back of her waist to her knees. (The big bow in the back seems to be gone.)
  9. Instead of the strict, pleated skirt, she now has two softly cascading skirts, one ice-blue and one just plain blue over it.
  10. Her boots are now white, and the top is now v-shaped, blue-trimmed, (and of course) with a star in the middle (note also the wonderfully sexy stiletto heels )!

FFF:FinickyFukuFacts
Little known details and tidbits about Ami-chan's fuku ^_-

The original Sailormercury manga fuku is actually sleeveless, just like Sailorpluto's. It was only when Sailormercury powered up that Naoko drew her fuku with sleeves.

In the case of the Sailormercury anime fuku, the number of lines on her sailor fuku's collar also correspond to the number of lines on her school uniform's collar. Senshi with two lines on their collars are Mercury, Jupiter and Moon, while those who have one line in theirs are Venus and Mars. Look closely at their school uniforms to find out…

All the inner senshi have only one line in their Supersailor fuku's collars, regardless of how many it had been before. Also, when they become starsenshi, the lines on their collars become yellow in color (This one applies to all the senshi, except Sailormoon.).

When Naoko Takeuchi draws gloves, they only reach to just below the elbow, but anime artists tend to cover the elbow when they draw gloves.

In the manga, the senshi change their fuku at the very same time that Sailormoon does.
