Chapter 5
When they left, the men threw themselves over Zoisite, facing him with a gaggle of questions. Waving a hand, Zoisite shook them off. In understanding, they calmed down and left him alone, knowing that when he was ready he would tell them. Throwing back looks to him, they left the platform.
Zoisite didn't even notice them, so buried he was on his thoughts. Did Lady Mars tell me the truth? Is she really as they told me she was? Thinking to himself, he whispered "Zoi," and appeared on his room in no time. Sitting down on his bed and laying his head on his chin, wondered aloud: "May she is as depressed as I am? Then that would mean, she--"
She doesn't love you, whispered a voice in his head.
"Shut up, would you? I'm trying to think." He lay on the bed, thinking deeply. He didn't even realize day had been replaced with night, and that he had been there for hours. When he woke up, he noticed he had being dozing off. Looking to his night table, he saw it was almost twelve o'clock. My God! I was here all afternoon! Then, he remembered what had happened, and uncertainty filled him, as he looked through the window, with longing in his eyes. He imagined her face in the sky, and made a decision. I'm going to the Moon! I must know! I don't care if I'm forbidden; if they don't see me, everything will be ok! He stood up, and making sure he was alone, whispered "Zoi," and left.
He reappeared in a dark room, the light of the night filling it through the balcony. Only a square of light was on the floor, everything else was completely in darkness. Where am I? Me and my directional sense! Hmph! I probably am on the cleaning-stuff closet by now! He tried to adjust his eyes to the growing blackness, and noticed a door not far away. I hope I don't slip with a broom or something inside here! Slowly, he walked towards the door, until something happened. A noise reached his ears. It was a ruffling sound, like cloth moving against cloth. Somebody else is here!
Walking deeper into the dark, he adjusted his eyes to the dark. When he could see more or less clearly, his heart stopped beating as he noticed where he was. It's her room... Oh-my-God! Indeed, it was Mercury's room. She was sleeping, the sheets covering her up to the waist. Her left hand was under the pillow, the other resting above it. Zoisite felt as a warm feeling spread over him, the feeling of love. He walked to her side, and kneeled by her, after lighting on her night-lamp.
Her breathing was calm, but Zoisite noticed that the pillow and sheets were wet, just as her face. Dry tears were on it, making trails down her cheeks. She was crying... she was crying! Not being able to stop himself, he raised his hand and caressed her cheek. He cleaned it, and lightly stroked her face. It was so soft and tender... it was like touching the wind. Mercury sighed in contentment, but didn't wake up. As she moved, Zoisite saw something in her hand. Looking at it, he saw it was a rose. A pink rose. The same rose he had given to her when they first met. He felt as his eyes became glassy, as he realized how much he loved her. I don't care if you don't like me... I'll always love you, no matter what. Brushing away his tears, he raised the sheets up to her neck, covering her from the cold night breeze. She moved, this time, ended facing him. Her lips were a bit open, her breathing coming out of them silently.
Then, suddenly, she started frowning and moaning quietly. Her hands twisted the sheets, and her forehead had a thick layer of sweat. She's having a nightmare! Then, he heard something familiar in her groans.
Bending over, he got closer to her, and listened carefully. "Don't... don't go...please... don't leave me". Mercury talked in her dreams, her beautiful face taking different shapes as it represented every feeling passing over her. Zoisite's heart ached in desire to help her. Moving further, he whispered in her ear. "Sshh, Ami. Calm down. I'm here now, and will never leave you again." The young girl stopped moving, and relaxed in her sleep. He smiled, feeling better for haven making her feel better. "Sleep Ami. I love you, remember that..."
Then, to prove his word was true, he kissed her lightly on the lips. I've forgotten how good this felt, he thought as he kissed her again. They parted, leaving his face just inches away from hers. Mercury sighed again, this time drifting into the world of good dreams. Zoisite brushed some strands of her hair away from her face, and arising, walked to the balcony. I wish I could stay more... That was soon forgotten, as he heard steps coming towards the room. Quickly, he whispered "Zoi!" and left, just as the door was being opened...
