I have wanted to do an Ami article for a while but I didn’t really know where to put it on the SM Zone (plug plug!) as mine is not a Sailor Mercury Homepage, and I don’t really have the energy to do yet another shrine (I already have a Mars one). Fortunately my dear friend Bowaggi has given me this opportunity to wax lyrical about Ami-chan in this, my favorite Sailor Mercury shrine, and here I am! ^_^
If you surf the ‘net for Sailormoon sites a lot (generally a depressing experience to be sure ^^;;) I am sure you will have noticed the argument of who is the most powerful senshi/ scouts. Ignoring the Outers for a moment, we often see that it’s either Sailor Jupiter or Sailor Mars, what you never see is Sailor Mercury’s name, not only that, poor Merc is often cited as being the "weakest" as if she is a weak link of some kind within the group. As far as I am concerned arguments about who is the most powerful senshi is facile, and I have no interest in joining it, I mean, get a life you guys! However, I also find the put down of Mercury irksome, let’s face it, all the senshi will be dead or trapped in some weird dimension forever if not for Sailor Mercury! Perhaps this even makes the strongest senshi in some way? Well, each of the senshi has an important role to play, and every one of them has saved the entire team on several occasions, that is what makes the argument stupid. But let’s get back to Ami-chan, while Rei seems to be the most hated Inner senshi because of her bickering with Usagi (ignorant people just don’t understand their complex but deep friendship), Ami seem to be the most ridiculed! They laugh at her Shabon Spray attack, and they make sad attempt at sarcasm like "oh! Keep that shabon spray away from me, I’m really afraid!". Ha bloody ha! If you were walking alone on the street at night and suddenly you are enveloped by this incredibly fog I wonder of you will find it so laughable, but more importantly the shabon spray saved Usagi’s life the very first time it was used and it also saved the entire group many times. If you were on the run from someone wouldn’t you like to have the shabon spray to help you sneak away? Even more importantly, Sailor Mercury’s attack has been upgraded twice, the first upgrade was the "Shine Aqua Illusion" where she freezes her target in a block of ice. If you laugh at her "weak" attacks and she freezes you in a block of ice it would serve you right! ^_- The second upgrade the "Aqua Rhapsody" is like the younger sister of Neptune’s "Deep Submerge" it looks pretty destructive to me! But of course, Ami’s most powerful weapon is, and has always been, her intellect. Even the mighty Uranus has to concede that Ami saved both of them by breaking Neherania’ spell of illusions. She also did the same thing at the end of the first series and near the end of "Super S". She eats spells of illusion for breakfast! Another noteworthy point is that every time he senshi gets trapped into some weird dimension it is usually Ami who show them the way out wit the aid of her little palmtop computer! |
When they are not laughing at her attacks they sneer at her "nerdish" personality. "No life" they say, "only book smart" they say. In fact people often compare her intellect to Michiru’s and say that Michiru is naturally smart and Ami is only "book smart" OK, never mind who is smarter, another pointless, facile argument, to be sure, whoever raises this kind of argument in the first place isn’t very smart at all. What does "book smart" mean? Does that mean she only knows what she learns from books, is that what? When you study for exams have you ever read seemingly piles and piles of books and memorize everything only to find that you still can’t answer the exam questions? See, what you read in books is mainly theory, to apply theories or concepts in real life actually require more than simple memorization, it requires deep understanding of what you read. Ami didn’t get top marks in all of Japan because she memorized everything. |
Ami probably reads too much and perhaps she ought to go out and enjoy herself more, but everybody likes her, even Haruka and Michiru because she is always friendly, kind, sweet, sincere and gentle. She isn’t as much fun as Minako or as fiery as Rei, Ami is Ami and everybody (in the show) seems to love her as she is, so what is this personality problem she's supposed to have? Her personality has also been developing throughout the seasons and by Sailor Stars she was enjoying the more fun things in life just as much as anybody. |
I don’t know, people just love to hate, they always find something to hate even in an anime show. With a little tolerance and understanding Ami is the best friend anybody could have. |
