The baltic sun
Old baltic myths tell of a sungoddess, saule, which was seen as mother.she lived
in a sky-house surrounded by three fences. She is connected to snakes, as a saying goes:if a snake dies, the sun will cry.Connected to her is also a tree, which is said to grow at the beginning of the world, where the sun rises
each morning. The red tree of dawn,as it is called, contains a round object(who knows?).Stories tell of many, who went out on horse to find the tree. Some never
returned, others came back emptyhanded. In the baltic myths, the moon is male, menes,a word related to month. The balts used to bow to the rising sun each morning, this gesture is also known in germanic culture. One such prayer goes:
Hail to thy, lady sun,all the worlds delight.
