Ashes of Time won 3 Hong Kong Film Awards in 1994: for best cinematography, best art direction and best costumes. In most categories it was nominated in competition against Chungking Express, that came out the same year. It also won the taiwanese Golden Horse Award for best cinematography, 4 Hong Kong Film Critics Society Awards (best movie, best director, best script and Leslie as the best actor of the year) and the Osella d'oro for the "Highest visual achievment" at the Venice Film Festival.

Ou Yang Feng's Sister in law. Her life is overwhelmed
with sorrow for the decsion she made to marry Oy Yang Feng's brother instead
of follow her love for Oy Yang Feng.
Blind Swordsman. His life revolves around his
urge to be destructive since his wife fell in love with his former best
friend Huang Yao Shi.
Ou Yang Feng the main character of the film and
also the main narrator, he is later know as Poisonous West. He has taken
a detached view of life and only cares about money. At the end of the film
however, he disregards protecting his own life and lives in the excitement
and heat of battle, fighting anyone and everyone.
Before I saw this movie I didn't know who Leslie
Cheung was but I accidently found a page
about him.
Girl with eggs. Her name is never said in the
film. Her life is filled with her desire to get revenge for her brother
who was slain by a group of Militia. Ou Yang Feng ignores her beg for help,
he tells her to sell her body to him and he will kill the Militia. She
refuses and is later helped by Hung Qi who she falls in love with.
Peach blossom. The blind swordsmans wife she
is withdrawn from other people but has a great lust for nature.
The split personalities of Mu Rong Yang and Mu
Rong Yin, Later known as the Defeat-Seeking Loner. She has become insane
after Huang Yao Shi didn't turn up to marry her. She spends the rest of
her life searching for someone that can defeat her and is finnally killed
by Hung Qi.
Huang Yao Shi, later known as Evil East. He ignores
his past and lives his life in isolation as a hermet on . It is because
of him that most of the characters
Hung Qi, later known as nine-fingered Northern
Beggar, leader of the Beggar Clan. His life is concerned with his search
for fame and he is willing to fight for any cause.
