Fushigi Yugi (Japanese for Mysterious Play) is my favorite anime. It's about a 15-year-old girl named Miaka Yuuki who is literally sucked into a book, The Universe of the Four Gods (another name is The Four Gods of Heaven and Earth). Miaka becomes the priestess of Suzaku, the beast god of the South, and she has to gather the seven celestial warriors of Suzaku, so she can have her three wishes granted. The seven warriors of Suzaku are Tamahome, Horohori, Nuriko, Chichiri, Tasuki, Mitsukake, and Chiriko.
Miaka is faced with lots of setbacks. Her best friend, Yui Hongo, is sucked into the book also, and she becomes the priestess of Seiryuu, the beast god of the East. Yui believes that Miaka abandoned her, and they become bitter enemies, each trying to summon their god before the other. The seven celestial warriors of Seiryu are Nakago, Soi, Amiboshi, Suboshi, Ashitare, Tomo, and Miboshi.
