I finally organized my bookmarks to make some sense, and now I have a routine. I mean it, I sorted out the things that I click up once in a blue moon, things I click up weekly, things I click up daily. My number one stop, one I may click a dozen times a day if I'm bored or if something is happening there is the Hygrid Image & Participant Report; I almost I think of it as a bulletin board. My other daily stop is Lileks. Now that I have Lileks to check up on everyday, I am beginning to understand why the hell people come read what I have to say. It's not that he's saying anything so profound, it's just nice to have someone good to catch up with and keep track of and visit regularly. I feel much better about the value of my own efforts, now. Lileks actually writes columns for a living, which could explain why he's so adept at it. But humorous writers are rare treasures, nowadays, and deserve to be cherished.
I also always stop and read Lakshman on Wednesdays, when he speaks his piece. I find him an interesting and lucid sort of person, a young dude, but worldly-wise. He has very distinct interests: creative writing, Indian names/language/culture, politics in general, Oklahoma culture shock. He's a pretty good explainer of things. I've gotten to where I know what will get a rise out of him. I hate his frames, though, which launch layer upon layer of new browsers. Now cut that out!
Yes, I bug other people with pain-in-the-ass E-mails about virtually everything they write, both Lileks and Lakshman. Neither one of 'em replies unless I say something particularly interesting, but I respect that. I'm just an opinionated enough person that I can't listen to anyone else's opinion without getting my 2 cents worth in.
And on Saturday, there's the fleeting pleasure of reading the dream comic of the week at Slow Wave. There's never enough of it. Aside from the graphics loading time, those 3 little panels are just not enough, but I enjoy them immensely anyhow.
I do as much near random scooting around as anyone when I'm vaguely searching for something, or definitely researching for that matter. I find lots of stuff in the course of seeking something else. Even if I got in a total rut, treading familiar paths, pals like Harry would send in reports of more adventurous explorations, full of refs to links. The bookmarks list keeps growing, god knows... but that's good news.
