A Better Fool (Aug. 19, '98)

We haven't been married even a year yet and I almost missed my wife's birthday. But then I've always been ahead of the curve when it comes to exhibiting bad symptoms.

This was inspite of planning things so that I couldn't ever forget. I hold that you can't really make things fool-proof -- the moment you try, someone hires a better fool. Still, I tried. And I beat the "fool-proof" system. So there.

My computer reminded me a week ago to buy a gift. I complied. Then, yesterday, a pop-up message reminded me that the next day was la jeune femme's birthday. I may have remembered it when I went to bed but it was completely off my mind this morning. Even the strange looks I received at breakfast didn't jog anything. It was at work when my computer beeped that I looked at the entry in my calendar. Of course!

So, at lunch time, I got an extra gift and acted as if that was the idea all along. The lengths I will go, au Clinton, to mislead!
