BusinessWeek,
in a recent article,
reported that married men tend to earn 6-7% more than single men of the
same age, education and experience. Your favorite columnist (me, me)
pondered this question, motivated no doubt by his imminent plunge into
the ranks of the high-fliers, and came up with possible reasons why a
married man makes more:
It's society's way of paying a married man for his trouble.
He puts in more hours ever since he got beat by his kid
at basketball.
He carries his hardworking, uncomplaining home habits to the workplace.
Tell a single guy some confidential information
and he will tell all his friends. Who
can a married guy tell?
He compensates for losing control at home by making sure he doesn't lose
it at the office.
There is nothing for a married man to do at home. You think he can go
to a bar instead of working late at the office? You think?
He dare not make less.
He is working hard, saving up for his alimony payments.
The article itself suggests a reason: that men who get married are the
type of person that employers value -- these men have already demonstrated
responsibility and loyalty. If you think so.
