Performing special moves (whether or not they hit). 2. Damaging your opponent with anything aside from a DM/SDM. 3. Getting damaged by your opponent. When it's full, it then empties, but you gain 1 green POW point. You can hold: 1. Three points when playing with your first character. 2. Four points when using your second character. 3. Five points when you're controlling your last team member. Accumulated POW points can be expended to: 1. Use the 'Activate Power Gauge' move (press A + B + C). 2. Use a DM (Desperation Move). When you activate your Power Gauge, it turns into a timer bar that slowly empties. While the timer bar is on-screen: 1. You can use the GC Emergency Evade or GC Strike Attack. They can be used repeatedly without draining any power from the timer bar or Power Gauge. 2. You can perform a SDM (Super Desperation Move). This is done with the same command as a DM and costs an additional POW point (just like when using a DM), but since your Power Gauge has been activated, you'll perform the SDM version instead. 3. Your body will flash, and any attack you make does 25% more damage. You can lose Power Gauge energy, POW points, or your activated Power Gauge under these conditions: 1. Activating your Power Gauge or performing a DM or SDM all cost one point. 2. Between rounds, POW points are carried over, but Power Gauge energy that has been accumulated is not (the gauge empties. Even if it is almost full, you still won't gain a point). 3. If your Power Gauge has been activated, it returns to normal between rounds. 4. If you perform an SDM, your Power Gauge returns to normal whether or not the move hit or not. 5. If you wait too long after activating your Power Gauge, then the timer bar empties and the Power Gauge goes back to normal. ======================================================================== THE POWER GAUGE IN EXTRA MODE ======================================================================== You can fill up your Power Gauge by: 1. Charging up your Power Gauge (hold down A + B + C). 2. Getting damaged by your opponent. The Power Gauge shrinks every time you lose, making it easier to fill it up. It shrinks to: 1. 75% of it's normal size when playing with your second character. 2. 50% of it's normal size when using your final character. When your Power Gauge is filled, it says 'MAXIMUM' and slowly begins to empty. While the Power Gauge is emptying: 1. You can use the GC Emergency Evade or GC Strike Attack. Using either one of them will completely empty the Power Gauge. 2. You can perform a DM (Desperation Move). 3. Your body will flash, and any attack you make does 50% more damage. If you take enough damage (if your life is at 20% or less), your Life Gauge begins flashing red. When this happens: 1. You can perform DMs repeatedly. 2. You can use the GC Emergency Evade or GC Strike Attack. They can be used repeatedly without draining any power from the Power Gauge. 3. If your Power Gauge was maxed out and is now emptying, then you can use SDMs instead of DMs. Doing so will not affect your life, but it will empty your Power Bar completely. Note that if your life is raised beyond 20% (this may happen if you win the round, since you gain back some life, or if you're using Heidern's restorative "Bringer" moes), then your Life Gauge stops flashing and you lose all benefits of having a low Life Gauge. You can lose Power Gauge energy under these conditions: 1. Performing a DM or SDM when the Power Gauge is full will empty it. 2. Between rounds, all accumulated Power Gauge energy is lost, even if it was almost full. 3. If your Power Gauge had been maxed out and is now emptying, it returns to normal between rounds. 4. If you perform an SDM, your Power Gauge returns to normal whether or not the move hit or not. 5. If you wait too long after maxing out your Power Gauge, then it empties and the Power Gauge goes back to normal. ======================================================================== USING COMMAND ATTACKS ======================================================================== There are three rules to keep in mind when using a command attack: - Some command attacks are overhead moves, most can be comboed into, and most be cancelled into a special move. - _But_, if you combo into a command attack, it loses any special properties it had (it won't work as an overhead or knockdown attack, for example). - However, for some command attacks, you _have_ to combo into them first if you want to then cancel them into a special move. The general idea is that, if a command attack has a special feature (overheads or knockdowns), it must be comboed into if you want to cancel from it. Otherwise, you should be able to cancel it into a special move just fine (but like I said earlier, not all command attacks can be cancelled from--see each characters's move list below for more information). Let's use Saishu for an example (and not just because he's one of my favorite characters): - Saishu's Gou Tsuchi (f + A) is an overhead attack. Normally, he _cannot_ cancel it into a special move (such as a Yami Barai). - However, if he uses a close standing C, then combos that into the Gou Tsuchi, he can then cancel the Gou Tsuchi into the Yami Barai. This 3-hit combo looks like this: Crouching C, f + A, qcf + P - Saishu's other command attack is the Atama Tsui (f + B). This move doesn't have any special properties. However, it can be comboed from. For instance, Saishu could use the Atama Tsui, then the Oni Yaki, like this: When close, f + B, f,d,df + P - If he wanted to he could even combo into the Atama Tsui, like so: Standing C, f + B, f,d,df + P Remember that these rules apply to every command attack. The characters with hidden counterparts include: Kyo, the Fatal Fury Team, the Art of Fighting Team, Mai Shiranui, Billy Kane, the New Faces Team, and Rugal Bernstein (you can only select Omega Rugal in the home versions, though). ======================================================================== USING THE ROULETTE ======================================================================== To pick a random character, go to the roulette (the box with a question mark in it between Rugal and Shingo). You can select a random character for one, two, or all of your team's characters. Afterwards, you'll get a new character to fight with in each battle. ======================================================================== FIGHT SHINGO YABUKI ======================================================================== To fight Shingo Yabuki alone, you have to fulfill one of these requirements: - Prior to the fourth match, you have to have over 200,000 points. If you do this, Shingo challenges you on your 4th match. If not, read below: - Prior to the fifth match, you have to have fulfilled the first condition (over 200,000 points), as well as having gotten a perfect victory in the previous rounds (i.e. one character is never hit). If you do this, Shingo challenges you on the 5th match. If not, read below: - Prior to the sixth match, make sure that you've fulfilled the previous requirements (over 200,000 points and one perfect victory), and make sure that none of your fellow members die (get a straight win) during the previous match. If you do this, Shingo challenges you on the sixth match. ======================================================================== CHOOSE YOUR WIN POSE ======================================================================== Normally, when you win, you perform a random win pose. However, if you hold down any button (A through D) right after you win the round, your character will do a specific win pose. ======================================================================== CHOI'S SPECIAL WIN POSE ======================================================================== I'm afraid to say I don't really know what the heck this is. I guess some people related to Choi Bounge will ride by on a bicycle? Anyway, you can see it by doing the following: - Fight on the Korea stage? - Make sure you're on the third round, and using Choi. - Make sure there are 30 seconds or less remaining. - Kill your opponent with a special move (SDM?) - Hold the D button for your win pose. Er, hey, that's just what I read at Ura no Ura, dunno what it's supposed to be. I've tried this trick on all of the stages, using either of Choi's DMs (and SDMs), and having it so that the third round was the last round for both my team as well as for my opponent's team, but I can't get the trick to work. Anyone who can, I'd love to hear how you did it. ======================================================================== HIDDEN SURVIVOR MODE ======================================================================== On the home version, you can activate an harder Survivor mode by highlighting 'Survivor' in the menu and pressing A + C. +=====+=====+=====+=====+=====+=====+=====+=====+=====+=====+=====+=====+ 5. M I S C E L L A N E O U S +=====+=====+=====+=====+=====+=====+=====+=====+=====+=====+=====+=====+ ======================================================================== ATTITUDE INFORMATION ======================================================================== Knowing how your characters are feeling is important because it determines the chance of them helping you when you attempt a Cover Attack. In addition, if you're using Advanced Mode, it affects the number of POW points you have. I haven't noticed any effect that it has if you're using Extra Mode. The faces and their meanings are as follows: Yellow, happy-looking face: - You're more likely to be helped / Advanced users gain 1 point. Gray, bored face: - You might not be helped / No change in points for Advanced users. Angry, red face: - You'll never be helped / Advanced users lose all points. Unlike KoF '97, a character's attitude does not change depending on his or her partners--it just represents that character's attitude in general. In the arcade version, each person's attitude changed daily, but in the home version, each person always has a specific attitude, listed below: Happy characters: Billy, Chang Koehan, Heavy D!, Iori, King, Saishu, Shingo, Sie Kensou, Takuma, Terry Bogard, Vice. Angry characters: Choi, Chris, Heidern, Joe Higashi, Kim Kaphwan, Leona, Lucky, Mature, Rugal, Ryo Sakazaki. Bored characters: Everyone else. To see the attitude of your characters, select your team. Then, when asked to arrange who fights in what order, hold Start and the faces will be displayed. To understand how the faces work, I'll make up a mock example of a certain character line-up: - Goro is going first and has a bored face. - Leona is going second and has an angry face. - Shingo is going third and has a happy face. In this setup, Goro will never be helped by Leona, since Leona has an angry face and so will never take part in a Cover Attack. Let's say Goro loses and Leona is now fighting. If he attempts a Cover Attack, Shingo will always try to help her since Shingo has a happy face (he likes everybody, even psychos like Leona). If Leona loses and Shingo is fighting, he cannot use a Cover Attack. This is simply because there are now no more undefeated teammates left. On the other hand, if, for example, Shingo went first and Goro went second, then Shingo would sometimes get help from Goro, and sometimes not. This is because Goro has a neutral face and so he doesn't really feel like helping Shingo all the time. Now, let's use the same characters, but this time we'll look at what happens to your DM points if you're in Advanced Mode. - Goro is going first and has a bored face. - Leona is going second and has an angry face. - Shingo is going third and has a happy face. Goro amasses enough power during the round to earn 2 POW points, but he's defeated before he can use them. Leona, who's up next, will have those 2 POW points, since Goro is netural and there is no change in points. However, if Leona loses with 2 POW points still remaining, then Shingo will start off with nothing, because Leona is angry and is probably hoping Shingo will lose. However, let's say Shingo was the second character and Leona was third. Shingo would still have those two points that he earned from Goro. If he's defeated in battle, then Leona will start off with three points, since Shingo's a happy fellow and wants to help her out. Got it? Yep, I know it's confusing! Andy is standing in the background, shrugging. BILLY KANE / CHANE KOEHAN / JOE HIGASHI - All three of them are close together with very tough looks on their faces. CHANG KOEHAN / CHIN GENTSAI / CHOI BOUNGE - The trio are shown within a little picture frame with Choi in the middle blowing a kiss. On the frame there is a double overlapped heart that says "CUTE" on it. CHIZURU KAGURA / IORI YAGAMI / KYO KUSANAGI - Chizuru is standing between Iori and Kyo, who have turned away from each other. RYO SAKAZAKI / TAKUMA SAKAZAKI / YURI SAKAZAKI - Takuma has his Mr. Karate mask on top of his head. He's apparently cooking something (rolling some dough), while Yuri and Ryo are nearby with their backs to him. ======================================================================== PRE-FIGHT POSE INFORMATION ======================================================================== Most of the information here comes from other contributors (I'm checking what I can as I play). I'd like to give a big big thanks to Kailu Lantis and Hisamastu Iuchi for much of this info. ANDY BOGARD VS. MAI SHIRANUI - Andy and Mai clap hands and bow at each other simultaneously, but they smile at each other afterwards. ATHENA ASAMIYA VS. SIE KENSOU - Kensou crouches and wiggles, with a very happy look in his face. He extends his arms towards Athena (as if to hug her), and mutters "Athena!" (a heart symbol flies afterwards). Athena gives a look of annoyance as the heart disappears, puts her hands on her waist, and says something like "I'm so ashamed". BENIMARU NIKAIDO VS. ANY FEMALE CHARACTER - Benimaru holds his open palm in front of him, and says "Ikuze, kawaiinochan" (Let's go, my dear cutesy), and then runs his hands through his hair. BILLY KANE VS. IORI YAGAMI - Eiji appears next to Billy, both clench their fists towards Iori, and Billy says "I wish I could tear him apart!" Eiji then vanishes, leaving Billy to look around him in confusion. Iori does his normal intro. BLUE MARY VS. TERRY BOGARD - Mary holds her hand next to her face and says "Hi, handsome boy". Terry, who has his cap turned backwards, gives Mary the thumbs-up, and then straightens his cap. BRIAN BATTLER VS. HEAVY D! / LUCKY GLAUBER - Brian gives the thumbs-up pose towards Heavy D! / Lucky and says something. CHANG KOEHAN VS. CHOI BOUNGE - Chang and Choi are surprised to see each other, Chang puts down his iron ball, and both begin to wiggle their "skirts" (the thing that hangs below their belly), while chanting ridicously. CHIN GENTSAI VS. ATHENA ASAMIYA - Athena puts her hands together and says something to Chin. Chin, with hands behind his back, nods his head. CHIZURU KAGURA VS. IORI YAGAMI / KYO KUSANAGI - Chizuru motions her hand in front of her in a circle motion. She raises her hand, and a mirror appears in front of her. Kyo and Iori do their normal intros. CHIZURU KAGURA VS. CHRIS / MATURE / RUGAL / RYUJI / SHERMIE / VICE / YASHIRO NANAKASE - Chizuru dresses up as a Shinto priestess, takes a purification wand from the floor, and shakes it in front of her. She then puts it back to the floor. CHRIS VS. SHERMIE - Chris rises his hand and says "Shermie!", and Shermie waves towards Chris, saying "Hi!" CHRIS VS. YASHIRO NANAKASE - Chris rises his hand and says "Yashiro!", and Yashiro strikes a pose with two fingers above his head, saying "Yo!" CLARK STEEL VS. HEIDERN / LEONA - Clark removes his cap, extends it towards Heidern / Leona, then puts it back on. GORO DAIMON VS. BENIMARU NIKAIDO / KYO KUSANAGI - Goro bows slightly, and then rises both arms and shouts (like in his taunt). Benimaru and Kyo do their normal intros. HEAVY D! VS. BRIAN BATTLER / LUCKY GLAUBER - Heavy D! points towards Brian / Lucky and says something. HEIDERN VS. CLARK STEEL / RALF JONES - Heidern taps his baton on his hand a couple of times, points it towards Ralf/Clark, and flicks it to the ground. HEIDERN VS. RUGAL BERNSTEIN - Heidern points towards Rugal with his back turned towards the screen, and says something that translates to "You were like a shooting star. Your ambition was the cause of your destruction". Rugal, who has his arms crossed and a confident smile in his face, chuckles and says something that translates to "Think again!" IORI YAGAMI VS. KYO KUSANAGI - Kyo holds his arm up, which crosses his face, with flames in it, as he says something that translates to "The flames are calling for you!" Iori extends his arm in front of him with purple flames on it, and says something that translates to "Then burn, as you should!" Then, both put their hands back down quickly, creating a flame arc in front of them of their respective color. JOE HIGASHI VS. KING - Joe has back towards screen, seems to put something on his waist. Then, he turns to King, showing his championship belt as he laughs. King touches her forehead and shakes her head with embarassment, saying "Haa, atama itai ne." (Ha, what a headache.) KIM KAPHWAN VS. BILLY / CHRIS / IORI / MATURE / RUGAL / RYUJI / SHERMIE / VICE / YASHIRO NANAKASE - Kim has back towards screen, slowly rises his head, and his eye glimmers, saying "Aku wa yurusan!" (Evil is unforgivable), and then enters a battle pose, shouting (like in his normal intro). KIM KAPHWAN VS. CHANG KOEHAN / CHOI BOUNGE - Kim, with hands on waist, shakes his head, and then enters a battle pose saying "Ikuzo!" (Let's go!), like in his normal intro. Chang and Choi do their normal intros. KING VS. RYO SAKAZAKI - King is tapping one foot. She looks over her shoulder at Ryo, then pats her cheeks. Ryo smiles at her as she turns to face him. He then tugs on his shirt, like in his intro (but with no smile on his face). KYO KUSANAGI VS. BENIMARU NIKAIDO - Benimaru pauses for a moment, with his hand near face level, and then extends it towards Kyo saying "Ikuze, Kyo!" (Let's go, Kyo!), and then Kyo fixes his glove (which is extended towards the screen), and says "Yarou ka, Benimaru" (Shall we, Benimaru?) LEONA VS. CLARK STEEL - Leona salutes Clark military-style. LEONA VS. HEIDERN - Leona tugs on her shirt and her shorts, dusts herself off, and then salutes to Heidern saying something that translates to "Leona reporting, commander Heidern. I will complete my duty without fail". Heidern (who had his hands behind his back and has been smiling the whole time), slowly salutes Leona afterwards. LEONA VS. ATHENA / CHOI / IORI / JOE / RALF / SHINGO / SIE / YURI - Leona grabs her arm, gives a deep sigh, and shakes her head saying something that translates to "I don't want to do this". LUCKY GLAUBER VS. BRIAN BATTLER / HEAVY D! - Lucky has cap straight, and is facing the screen. He then puts it backwards as he says "Whoa!" MATURE VS. RUGAL BERNSTEIN - Mature gets into a pose similar to her Marilyn Monroe win pose, and bats her eyes at Rugal while smiling. She then leans forward and blows him a kiss while saying, "Toriko ne shitte agemosu wa...." (I shall enthrall you....) RALF JONES VS. CLARK STEEL - Ralf folds his arm towards the screen, saying "Ikuze, Clark!" (Let's go, Clark!), and then Clark removes his shades, putting himself in the same pose as Ralf, saying "Ou!" Then both extend their hands towards the screen, put their fists together (creating a chi blast with it), and then Ralf puts himself in a Greek statue position (has his fist towards screen), and Clark ends up crouching and extending both arms towards the screen, both saying "Cross Changer!" as they do all this. RALF JONES VS. HEIDERN / LEONA - Ralf puts hand in pocket, and lazily salutes Heidern / Leona with two fingers. ROBERT GARCIA VS. SIE KENSOU - Kensou nods his finger and says "Donai de ka?" (How's it going?), and Robert responds by inviting him with his index finger, saying "Bochi bochi, dennaa" (Pretty good, I guess). RUGAL BERNSTEIN VS. CHRIS - Rugal faces the sky and his hands to his side while shaking. He says something that translates to "I have been waiting for this chance!" RYUJI YAMAZAKI VS. CHRIS / SHERMIE / YASHIRO NANAKASE - Yamazaki takes his hand to his head, and begins to bend his head back and forth, while laughing like a maniac. After that, he drops his arm (like in the first frame of the Snake Arm), and smiles. SAISHU KUSANAGI VS. KYO KUSANAGI - Saishu, arms crossed, says something that I THINK means "Come and fight, Kyo". He then puts his hands to his side and gives a mean face towards Kyo saying "Doushita?" (What's wrong?). Kyo does his normal intro. SAISHU KUSANAGI VS. RUGAL BERNSTEIN - Saishu flexes his shoulders with his back towards the screen, and says something that translates to "Are you sure you can beat me?". Rugal cracks his knuckles and says, "Yeah!" SIE KENSOU VS. CHIN GENTSAI - Kensou holds out two rice buns in front of him, and Chin holds out two sake jugs in front of him. Kensou and Chin begin to eat and drink (respectively), like two maniacs. Kensou winds up getting choked, and Chin gets pretty much drunk! SHERMIE VS. ANY MALE CHARACTER - Shermie blows a kiss and chuckles. SHINGO YABUKI VS. KYO KUSANAGI - Shingo points to Kyo, and then points his gloves. He then does Kyo's "Moetarou?" (Are you burned?) pose, and then slaps his head as he laughs like an idiot. Kyo scratches his head and says something that translates to "What are you doing?". TAKUMA SAKAZAKI VS. ROBERT / RYO / YURI - Takuma appears with his 'tengu' mask of Mr. Karate, arms crossed, and laughing. He then removes his mask, throws it upwards, and demolishes it with a kick. As for the others: * Robert covers his face and shakes his head. * Ryo scratches the back of his head and smiles nervously. * Yuri first reacts in surprise (almost falling backwards), and she then bows towards Takuma saying "Anta, oto-san?" (Are you Father?) TERRY BOGARD VS. ANDY BOGARD - Terry and Andy clap hands and bow at each other simultaneously. VICE VS. SAISHU KUSANAGI - Vice points towards Saishu and says "Anta mitetto hara tatte kundayo!" (The sight of your face ticks me off!) She then spits on the ground. Saishu does his normal intro. YASHIRO NANAKASE VS. IORI YAGAMI - Yashiro has back towards Iori, then turns around fixing his glove, saying "Yadanaa, tsuyosu" (Oh no, he looks strong), but ends with something that means "Not!" Iori does his normal intro. YASHIRO NANAKASE VS. A U T H O R ' S N O T E +=====+=====+=====+=====+=====+=====+=====+=====+=====+=====+=====+=====+ ======================================================================== TRANSLATION NOTES ======================================================================== The Japanese move names were mainly translated by myself, so there are probably a few mistakes or misinterpretations. Feel free to drop me a line and let me know what I slipped up on should you spot anything. Regarding the move names; SNK originally gave generic names to some of the new moves in KoF '98, then went back later and came up with the real, "offical" names. In the KoF '98 booklet that was being sold with the home version of the Japanese Neo*Geo cart, the temporary move names were simply crossed out, and the real ones written nearby. However, the handwriting is near impossible for me to make out (plus I was reading it from a scanned photo, since I don't own the book nor the Neo*Geo home version myself). As a result, I don't have the official name for Shingo's "Hiji Otoshi", and I can't be entirely sure of some of the other move names (I'm sure Omega Rugal's "Gravity Smash" is wrong as well). If I don't have the official or temporary name for a move, it's written in parentheses, in lowercase. In other cases where I'm unsure of a translation, a question mark appears in the brackets. This is mainly due to the fact that a kanji character written in kana could mean just about anything--all you know is it's spelling, and you have to make educated guesses. (Then again, in the case of the Orochi Team, I'd rather have all the moves in hiragana than in Russian, as they were originally written!) Also, some moves have more than one name (for Kyo and Yuri, in particular). SNK just gave the same move two different names, they're not for the different button strengths, as far as I know. Go figure. Finally, although his name is spelled 'Saisyu' in the game, it's spelled here as "Saishu". It's not incorrect, just a different (and a little more pronouncable) spelling. ======================================================================== REVISION HISTORY ======================================================================== Version 0.5 (March 21, 1998) - I know, more changes! Yay! Aside from being upgraded to FAQ status, you may have noticed that every last little thing has been translated, tested, and so on. Quite a bit of stuff remains to be added (example combos, quotes, move information, etc.), but that'll have to wait for later revisions. Since a friend of mine is getting the import PSX version at the end of March, I'll be able to add info. about that version of KoF '98 into this FAQ as well.
