CHU CHU'S REVENGE: --a twisted humor on Shoujo Kakumei Utena-- By: Diana Juri Serra and Onyx Storm @}--'--,--'--,-----

PART ONE ~~~~~~

It was a peaceful evening following an average day of classes at Ohtori Academy. The sun was setting majestically, turning the sky behind the Arena Forest a glowing orange fading into the deep blue of the approaching night. A soft breeze carried the scent of roses from the academy's rose garden. Many of the dorm room windows were open to feel the new spring breeze. Tenjou Utena leaned out of the window to breathe in the smell.

"I wonder how many of the rose bushes are in bloom now. Anthy doesn't seem to want to talk about them anymore." Her arm accidentally knocked an empty vase on the window sill. Utena sighed in thought, "Looks lonely...."

"Did you say something, Utena-sama?" came a soft voice from the doorway. Utena turned toward the familiar and comforting voice. Himemiya Anthy stepped into the room carrying a tray. On it was a very fine tea set decorated with the most delicate and fragile roses. Like her, Utena thought to herself. Anthy smiled, walked in the room, and set the tray down. "I brought us this tea, Utena-sama. Would you like it now, or should we wait?"

Utena smiled back. "Now is good, Anthy. You know, you really shouldn't work so hard. Let me make tea next time. Give yourself some time off. And loose the -sama please. You don't need to...."

"Whatever you say, Utena-sama."

Utena sighed. For a few minutes, the two drank their tea in silence.

"Hey, Anthy. Aren't we missing someone?" Anthy looked up. "Where's Chu Chu?" Utena asked.

In a dark closet, a little ways up the hallway, the animal in question sat on the floor surrounded by random metal objects. Among these were forks, spoons, butter knives, hair pins and several nail files. In the center of all this, Chu Chu sat sharpening the ends of a fork with one of the nail files. He froze, listening for footsteps of someone that might discover him. Hearing nothing, he looked at the end of the fork. Chu Chu pulled a loose thread out of his tie and tested the sharpness of the fork on it. He then looked at the metal shavings on the file.

"Chu chu."

"When did you see him last?" Utena asked as they looked frantically for the missing Chu Chu.

"I'm not sure, Utena-sama. He was on the counter helping me with the tea. I thought he followed me up to the room when I brought it," Anthy said as she once again answered Utena's question. They searched for almost thirty minutes before Anthy spotted Chu Chu outside of a hallway closet. He was wiping metal filings of his tongue carefully. It wasn't working very well because he also had them all over his paws.

<sudden menacing chords: dunt, dunt, daa!>

"What's wrong, Chu Chu? What did you get into this time?" Anthy asked him.

"Chu chu," he answered feebly.

Utena looked at his paws closely. "They look like pieces of metal. That must hurt. Can you get them off, Anthy?"

"I can try. Come on, Chu Chu. Let's see if we can get them off." As Anthy carried him off to the bathroom, Utena said to no one in particular, "I wonder what he's up to...."

~~~~~~~~~
A couple days later, the metal shaving incident was forgotten, and life went on as usual. Utena, like the other students of Ohtori Academy, went off to her classes just like every other day. But today felt different somehow, quiet and serene in a way that it normally doesn't. Not one to take good fortune in stride, Utena decided to take the long scenic route to class, passing by the rose garden. She saw Anthy there and waved. Anthy looked up, smiled and waved back. They left the dorm separately this morning because Utena wanted to take a long walk by herself and still be able to get to class on time. Anthy didn't particularly mind. Not today. It was beautiful in a way that only happens a few times all year. The roses were blooming in all the brilliant colors of the rainbow. Suddenly, Anthy spotted a bush of roses she hadn't seen before.
"Now where did you come from?" Anthy asked the unusual plant.
 At about lunch time, Utena was filled with the easiness of the day. It felt like nothing mattered in the world, and, at last, she could relax and forget about the duels that she was forced to fight to keep Anthy (and Chu Chu) away from the oppression of the Elite Student Council. Speaking of which....
"So no one has seen Nanami-sama?" a young blond haired boy asked a group of upperclassmen.
"No, Tsuwabuki. For some reason, she hasn't been at school all day."
"Her three friends are over there." The elder boy pointed to a group composed of three seventh grade girls: Sonoda Keiko, Wakiya Aiko, and Oose Yuuko. Tsuwabuki Mitsuru looked in that general direction but decided not to go over there.
"I'm sure she'll show up sooner or later," he said as he walked off. Utena laughed to herself. She shouldn't have been listening in, but when she heard that name she just had to look and see what was going on.
It's not that she particularly disliked Kiryuu Nanami, it's just that, well...maybe she did. It was always competition with her, never a break for herself or for Anthy. Utena laughed again. So that's why it seems so quiet! It's nice, she guessed, but it brings up an interesting question. Where is Nanami? Just then something caught her eye. A abandoned rose sat alone and mostly crushed on the ground near where Utena was standing. She picked it up. "A lavender rose? This is new."
 After classes, Utena and Anthy again sat down for some tea. This time Utena insisted on making it, and Anthy was forced to agree. After such a relaxing day, Anthy wasn't in much of a mood to argue. Not that she, as the Rose Bride, had all that much room to argue any point. She was faithful to her duties and loyal to the Victor of the duels. That was, of course, the Bride's place in all of that. Sometimes she wished she weren't the Bride but banished the idea quickly. Who was she to argue fate? Utena was talking, but Anthy wasn't listening. She was watching instead.
The sun shone jealously on Utena's long pink hair and glinted off of the temporarily forgotten rose signet. She's so unlike the others, Anthy thought. Her thoughts were disrupted by a small furry body and movement on the table. She looked down at Chu Chu playing with a butter knife. He was slowly growing closer to the edge of the table in his antics with the rose handled knife. Utena stopped talking when she realized that Anthy wasn't paying attention. She had been talking about the rumors she'd been hearing about the missing Nanami. Some had said she was sick. Then why didn’t Touga say anything? Some said she was skipping. But there again, why didn't her brother, president of Student Council, know anything either? It was all very strange.
Almost stranger yet was Chu Chu recently. He'd been acting strangely, but Utena couldn't put her finger on why. Right now he was twirling a knife like a baton. Well, she thought, stranger things have happened. Just then, something sitting on the window sill caught her eye.
"Hey, Anthy. Where did you get that lavender rose that's in the vase over there?"
She answered without looking up, "Chu Chu found this new breed of rose in the garden about a week ago. I'd never seen them before, so I brought one in." She smiled. "Don't you think they're intriguing, Utena-sama?" Utena looked at the strange ragged edges on the light colored petals. "That's one word for it."
Utena turned her attention to the room just in time to see Chu Chu duck around the door frame, butter knife in hand. "Strange animal." Anthy nodded in agreement and sipped her tea, just as the phone rang. Utena jumped up with, "I'll get it!" and ran to the phone.
"Tenjou. Moshi moshi?" After a few minutes of silence, "All right then," and she hung up. Anthy looked up at her expectantly. A strange look crossed Utena's face as she sat back down. Utena stirred her tea and sipped it thoughtfully before saying anything. When she did talk, it was in a slow and deliberate way that suggested to Anthy that Utena was looking for another meaning in her own words.
"That was a message from the Dean's office. It says there is no school tomorrow due to an unscheduled faculty conference," Utena said as she stared into the bottom of her tea cup. Something funny's going on, she thought.
PART TWO ~~~~~~~
The next day met not only an unscheduled faculty meeting but an unscheduled Student Council meeting as well. Members present were Kiryuu Touga - president, Kaoru Miki, Arisugawa Juri, and Saionji Kyouichi - vice president.
"I don't believe it, Saionji-san," Juri said caustically as the vice-president entered. "You actually decided to grace us with your presence."
"Believe it or not, Juri-san," he replied every bit as caustically, "here I am. I care what happens to and in the Student Council."
"This is a first."
The two went on like that for a few minutes. Seven minutes, thirty-two point fifteen seconds exactly by Miki’s stopwatch. Now is not the time for this, he thought. Not that any time really is. They’d all been going through a lot since they had been told of Nanami-san’s death. The police had told them that it was murder and there were no leads. They had given Touga, her brother, the only clue after determining that they could do nothing else as of now. Yes, the Council had been through a lot, but Touga had beenthrough a lot more.
Now, Touga sat at the table with his head on it, crying silently. True, she had been a pest sometimes, but never did she deserve this. Who would do this to her? It's so inhuman! Oh, Nanami.... Did you ever know how much I loved you? How much you really meant to me? Using her name in the past tense made him stop crying to himself and burst into an uncharacteristic flood of tears.
Abruptly, Juri and Saionji stopped their fighting and turned to their president who was now reduced to almost nothing. Saionji put his hand on Touga's shoulder in an attempt to comfort his best friend. The sunlight caught his rose signet in a vain attempt to catch someone's attention. He'd tried talking to Touga and found out that most words were wasted on him. What Touga need was a touch, a feeling that he wasn'tt all alone.
Touga reached up and took Saionji's waiting hand. It was comforting to an extent but not enough to keep new tears from coming out. He hated being like this, weak and dependent. The president should be strong for the others, not them for him. This thought alone shamed him into crying yet some more. Despite the seriousness of the situation, Miki and Juri were taking their fun out of the current situation. Every time Touga stopped for air, a solid *click* of the stopwatch was heard, followed by the sound of a pencil writing in a green notebook with a rose crest on it.
"After all," Juri told him, "These are grave times ahead. No pun intended. We have to find the humor when it comes, no matter how ill placed it seems. And besides...." Juri turned to leave. "....Only a miracle could bring her back," she said coldly.
This brought a new wave of tears from Touga, a dirty look from Saionji, a shocked expression from Miki, and a hurt laugh from the rapidly departing Juri.
"Wait a second...." The feebleness of his own voice made Touga wince.
Juri stopped in her departure, and turned, like the others, to look at Touga.
"I think I know who did it." With that he ran out of the Council room ahead of the others, throwing the lavender rose he was holding onto the floor.
The day passed quickly for Touga. He spent it alone, searching for clues, doing his own investigation, talking to no one. He was excited as he got into bed that night. He had almost enough evidence against his sister's murderer to bring the killer to justice. All he had to do was wait one more day. In the morning, Touga resolved, I"ll call the police and see this justice done. He quickly fell asleep.
He dreamed of happier times, more innocent times. He saw Saionji and himself practicing Kendo into the late hours, determined to be the best. He relived his first taste of Ohtori Academy. But mostly, he dreamed of Nanami.
<scampering sounds>
A shadow flickered at the door of Touga's chambers.
<more scampering sounds>
A glint of steel shone in the moonlight.
Touga stirred, "Oneesama...."
A lavender rose fell on his bare chest, now covered in a cold sweat. Touga quieted.
<chuchuchuchuchuchu> (like out of those Jason movies.)
A small shadow appeared over the headboard, and produced a shining gleaming fork. Right before the razor edges plunged into Touga's flesh, the killer stopped and thought. It put away the fork and produced a beautifully polished razor.
The figure smiled as it advanced on the sleeping Student Council president.
~~~~~~~~

Early the next morning, a phone call between Kaoru Miki and Arisugawa Juri took place. Pleasantries were exchanged, then they got down to business. Juri smiled into the phone. "School's out again today." But the smile quickly fell from her face. " heard something happened to Touga last night. Things are looking really bad if what I heard is true."

Miki shifted the receiver to his other ear. "Yes. I heard from a reliable source that someone cut off all his hair and then embedded the razor into his shoulder. All I really know is that a lavender rose was found at the scene. His pink strip of hair was tied around it like a ribbon." Miki shivered, obviously disturbed. "It's really scary, Juri-sempai."

On the other end, Juri winced. "Yes. I totally agree."

On the other side of campus, a small figure was admiring its new red nest. The pink wasn't very flattering so it made sure to leave it where the owner could keep it. It laughed. The president won't be needing much of anything anymore, will he? It nodded at its nest with a satisfied glance. Then it ran off to clean its coat and prepare.

On yet another side of campus, three girls were talking about the rumors that were flying across Ohtori Academy. At the loss of their "beloved leader" Kiryuu Nanami, Sonoda Keiko was calling all the shots. They gathered at a certain well kept dorm room and talked for a few hours. The hour started to grow late, and the conversation turned to the recent happenings.

"I wonder who did it," Oose Yuuko said, glancing around at the windows of the dorm room she shared with her friend Aiko. Wakiya Aiko, who was also visibly nervous, remarked, "It probably some jealous nobody trying to knock off some competition."

"I'll bet anything it's that creep, Himemiya Anthy, that's doing this," Keiko said smugly. I'll teach her a lesson. It's late tonight, so we'll get her tomorrow." She stood up, gathered her things, and bid her friends good night. She made sure the door was locked behind her. Keiko walked back to her own room, oblivious to the world, lost in her own thoughts.

"Wow! That was a good call. She's probably planned this out a long time ago," Aiko commented. "I wonder how to break it to her." Yuuko glanced around the room again. "I don't know. I didn't think she'd have the guts to do something like this." She shrugged. "Keiko's probably right."

Aiko jerked her head up suddenly. "What's that noise?"

<chuchuchuchuchuchu>

A flash moved toward Yuuko. "Hey, isn't that...AAAAAAAAA!!!!!!"

Aiko passed out as the killer attacked Yuuko with a fork. When Yuuko's screaming ceased, the killer turned to Aiko. It produced a sharpened butter knife and advanced on its motionless prey. After the deed was done, it secured a lavender rose between the hands of the two girls.

~~~~~~~~~
The next afternoon, Anthy filled her watering can and walked back to the rose garden. It was another seemingly peaceful day. (Emphasis on seemingly.) The news of the other students' deaths had reached throughout the entire campus. In a frightened rush, school was canceled until the murderer was caught. Almost the whole school was frightened into hiding.
Not Anthy. She went about her chores in taking care of the roses. They don't grow by themselves, you know. If nothing else, the Rose Bride must protect her floral servants, she thought to herself with a smile. About halfway back to the garden, Anthy was intercepted by a red eyed Keiko. She looked as if she'd been crying for quite a while.
"You, you...." she began and raised her hand to slap Anthy. But in her fragile state, Keiko couldn't finish what she started. She crumpled to her knees and started crying uncontrollably. Anthy just looked at the grief stricken Keiko. Then she walked away without so much as a word.
That night, Keiko sat on her bed looking at a picture of the four of them. Nanami, Aiko, Yuuko, and herself in better times, if not happier. She sniffed. She felt so alone and exposed. Vulnerable even. And there was nowhere she could go.
<scampering noise>
"Hello?" she called out.
<more scampering noises>
"Is anyone there?" she said softly, almost to herself.
A lavender rose landed in her doorway. Seeing it, recognizing it, Keiko started to back away in fear. She froze as she stepped back on something sharp. She slowly turned around to see her killer, the murderer of her friends.
<chuchuchuchuchuchu>
Her scream cut off abruptly.
PART THREE ~~~~~~~~~
The next day, the air was thick with anticipation and fright. The news of yet another murder flew through the academy. Many students went into hiding in their dorm rooms, refusing to come out even to eat. Police officers covered the crime scene areas, still shocked that there was no evidence and no suspects. The cases being tied together so obviously, it was a great surprise when nothing could be accomplished. No evidence could be found to do so. It was all very frustrating.
Utena sat, deep in her own thoughts, while Anthy once again made tea for them. The steaming liquid was helping to soothe her burnt-out nerves. Strange, Utena thought. This doesn't seem to be bothering Anthy too much. Anthy brought over Utena's tea and then excused herself to go and bathe Chu Chu.
"I'll come with you," Utena offered.
"As you wish, Utena-sama," Anthy responded with a smile.
Utena leaned against the counter near where Anthy washed the monkey-mouse animal. She looked at the badly soiled Chu Chu and asked casually, "How'd he get so dirty, Himemiya?"
As she scrubbed the almost black Chu Chu back to his normal color, Anthy said, "I really don't know, Utena-sama. He must have been rolling around in the dirt at the garden when I wasn't looking. I had to clean the floor this morning before you woke up to get the dirty footprints off the floor."
Utena eyed the pair suspiciously the shook her head. Where did a thought like that even come from? How could I ever?... "I must be under more stress than I thought."
"What did you say, Utena-sama?"
"Nothing, Anthy. Don't worry about it."
The Student Council was non-active to the point of being almost non existent. Since the killer seemed to target the Council, they decided to play it safe. The current events however did not spoil Juri's sense of persistence...or persuasion.
"Are you sure you want to practice NOW, Juri-sempai?" Miki asked for what must have been the thirtieth time. He sat on the bench, timing Juri's fencing attacks like they always did when he wasn't up to practicing. He didn't see how she could concentrate on the movements and the blade with so much going on in the academy. Sometimes Miki worried that she had grown too hard and had separated to far from the rest of the student body.
Juri's movements with the sword were as sharp and polished as the blade itself, the result of many years of hard practice. Her skill was only matched by the young Miki, and even then, only sometimes. She saw him fidgeting nervously out of the corner of her eye. "Well, Miki..."
*click*
"...it seems that someone..."
*click*
“...has to keep up with her practice."
*click* "Yes, but it seems an odd time to do it, with the murders and all. Plus the fact that the killer's still on the loose, Juri-sempai. Doesn't that worry you?" She turned to look at him for a second then resumed her attacks. "The way I see it..."
*click*
"...if I DO get killed..."
*click*
"...and I don't plan on it..."
*click*
"...I might as well be in shape." She lowered her sword to examine the edge of the blade. Then she walked over to where Miki was sitting.
*click*
An understanding look crossed her face. She ruffled his hair with the hand she wasn't holding the sword with. Light gleamed off the rose signet on her left hand. "Does it really bother you that much, Miki-kun?" She loved to see him blush and knew that the whole situation bothered him. Truth was, she wanted someone to be with her so she could still be strong, or at least act like it. Miki comforted her in that way, although she would never tell him so.
*click*
"It's mostly the fact that Touga never leaves his room since that particular...incident." Miki stared hard at his stopwatch, then his gaze shifted to his own rose ring. "And the fact that Saionji is practically a ghost. No one ever sees him anymore. What's happening to us?"
*click*
Juri put her arm around his shoulder. "Okay. You win. Let's go. Let's get out of here. How about I fix you some lunch to make up for it?" Miki found her smile misplaced yet comforting. "Okay" *click*
That night, a small shadow was seen inside these Student Council member's rooms.
<chuchuchuchuchuchu>
~~~~~~~~~

The following day, Utena awaked to the sound of arguing from the room below. When she came downstairs, she saw a rather strange sight. No,not strange exactly, just bizarre, unusual, unexpected(?). Anthy was holding Chu Chu. Miki was carrying a lavender rose and a fistful of paper. Juri was also holding one of the strange flowers and a broken gold chain. There were four small scratch marks on her right cheek. Saionji was looking at the floor (ahem, staring at the floor, ahem, memorizing the floor, ahem, well, you know what I mean). All except Saionji were arguing at the top of their lungs.

"Chu chu!" He jumped to the floor near Anthy's feet.

"I don't know where the roses are coming from! I haven't picked any!" Anthy opened her hands to prove that she had nothing in them.

"I found this in a window I didn't leave open, and my piano music was scattered and ripped!" Miki waved the papers in the air in front of his face.

"Someone took with my locket, scratched it into my mirror, and did this!" Juri pointed to her face, a tear forming in her eye. Things fell quiet when Saionji said, "Touga knew who it is," and then quickly excused himself.

He headed to his room while the others continued to argue and suspect one another. Utena stood at the foot of the stairwell, shocked and silent.

That night, a male scream was heard resounding throughout Ohtori Academy. Vice-president Saionji Kyouichi then fell silent. But this time the screams of the dying did not go unheeded.

The door was kicked in by President Quire Touga (wearing a hat, his right arm in a sling) and carrying a large shotgun in his left hand. He barged into the room, quickly followed by Tenjou Utena, Himemiya Anthy, Arisugawa Juri, and Kaoru Miki.

Upon seeing the gruesome sight, Touga paled out and dropped the shotgun, which carelessly went off. The flash reflected off a slightly tarnished surface of Touga's ring. The others pushed forward to the site while Anthy hung back. Utena's mouth dropped open. "Why, Chu Chu? Why?"

He stood over Saionji's body, repeatedly stabbing his heart with a sharpened fork. His eyes seemed to glow red with madness. "CHU chu chu CHU!" (roughly translated to "Die, Saionji! Die!")

Juri picked up the shotgun from where it lay, smoking. She pumped it and fired at the enraged animal. From that distance, it was impossible to miss. She smiled defiantly. "That's" what you get for messing with the Student Council!"

Utena turned around to see all the others. "I'm glad that at least we got out okay. I can't believe what happened. What a horrible thing! I just can't understand why he did that.... Hey, where's Himemiya?"

In the rose garden, Anthy plucked the blooms off the lavender rose bush. "Such a waste," she said to herself.

At a sound behind her, she turned.

"Convenient that your brother was here," she said and smiled.

"Chu chu."
