Memories of you.
This was the most famous ballad written by Eubie Blake (1883-1983), better known as a ragtime pioneer.Benny and lionel recorded it on a sextet date in October, 1939. Eddie uses the same
opening cadenza with which the Goodman version began.Throug- hout this track, the resemblance to his early idol is more noticeable than elsewhere in the album. The tune has a special significance for Gary Burton, since it was on Louis Armstrong's version of "Memories of You" that Lionel Hampton played his first-ever vibraphone solo at a time when the instrument was all
but unknown in jazz. Gary's lyricism is heard in the first bridge, and more extensively in the third chorus. The pure beauty of
Eddie's tone on clarinet is never more noteworthy than in
this graceful updating of a 60 year old melody.-From Eddie Daniels and Gary Burton Benny Rides Again..
