Name: Megumi Reinard
A lovely girl with a heart of gold, trying to get what she wants in
life.
Megumi is the communications (radio) officer for the ship, one of the four bridge bunnies onboard. She was hired by Negral for the position while she was paying her bills as a voice actress (seiyuu). Before that, she was a nurse. Both of these jobs play a part of the show on a few occasions. Her talent for the idol singer contest was made up as her in a nurse's outfit treating a teddy bear. When the crew was dismissed from the Nadesico, she returned to old job and did the voice for an enemy on Natural Laich (the magical-girl spoof).
Megumi took a liking and fell in love with Akito in episode four, when both of them felt depressed over the death of someone (Akito-Gai, Megumi-the people in the space station they approached). At the end of the episode, a kiss made Megumi's entry in the race for Akito's heart official.
Like a lot of things in this show, Megumi is a walking spoof of Japanese star Hayashibara Megumi. Both have the same given name and both held similar jobs in the past.
She has major qualms about Akito fighting in the war against the lizards, which comes to a point in the Christmas shore-leave episode as she tells him that there are many thing that should be protected as fiercely as "saving the world", like love and a girl. Some people consider this a tad selfish of her tell Akito, but this is how she feels about the war. When she was doing Natural Laich, she still felt fighting was wrong and pondered out loud why were children shows like Laich, which were created to give children a fantasy world free of pain to mentally play in, also saying fighting is good and right.
When the crew was dismissed from the Nadesico later on, she and Akito weren't together, which shows that she may not be the one for Akito, but she nonetheless does care for him, as earlier incidents proved.
She, like Jun, become second-best in the end, but she isn't completely
hurt by it. She herself said, "I'm fine as a substitute, but I am
not going to give up (ep. 5)."
