Name: Uribatake Seiya
A truly strange man that belongs on this ship of fools.

Seiya, or Uri-P as Hikaru called him, was hired by Prospector and Gort Holy to be the head mechanic of the Nadesico.  A man skilled by hands-on crafts, he still nonethe less out of his gorde.  The fact that he was working on an illegal android named Lily (*snicker*) that came complete with missiles shows not only his skill and imagination, but his insanity.

Obsessive about how things are made, to the point of arousal, I believe, he is also an avid model maker and collector.  In ep. 12 ("Those Unforgettable Days"), we get a glimpse, and whiff, of his room.  Cluttered with model sets from shows like Star Trek, and with a beautiful stench that drives people away, Seiya's room is one of the most otaku-ish on board, and in that I mean-not caring about anything except the object of fandom.  If you have seen Gainax's Otaku no Video, you would understand what I mean.

As a model maker, he is indeed good at what he does, as the diorama of a battle between Aestivalis's he created proved, but, as in the case of Yurika and Ruri, he can make mistakes.

He can also make technical errors in building actual war machines.  His X Aestivalis (X-Valis, or as the fool Munetake called it, Aesti-X) was an amazing machine, with a small version of the Gravity Blast hooked in, but it was a failure.  Ad. Munetake, in a bout of insanity, proved this point.

Although he is a family man, he cannot stand his wife.  Always being henpecked, he took on the job offered to him so that he could leave her behind, and hopefully get a girl.

He almost got a girl, too.  Hikaru and he had a lot of things in common and even bonded over the work of model building, yet Hikaru did not want that.  She didn't want a boyfriend, and she let him know.

By the end of the series, he does reconciles with his wife.

As a skirt-chaser however, he will still look at the ladies and will still lead the small group of lady-less men on board in watching the love polygon around Tenkawa Akito and envy Akito's sorry state.
