Muscular Imbalance

MUSCULAR IMBALANCE

Muscles can be divided into three groups:

1. Postural musculature

2. Dynamic musculature

3. Mixed musculature ( postural and dynamic functions)

Postural muscle is mainly for postural function, while movement is mainly the function of dynamic musculature.  Muscle groups that have both functions are mixed musculature.

When faulty loading occurs, postural muscle(s) react by shortening and dynamic muscle(s) by weakening.

There is a direct relationship between these two muscle groups in that shortened postural muscle(s) can inhibit its dynamic antagonists and synergists. Thus preventing optimal function from occurring.

Muscular imbalance

is a condition in which there is a lack of balance between postural and dynamic musculature.  This reduces the exercise tolerance of the body.  Shortened postural muscles go into action more rapidly. To produce defensive and protective movements.  This can lead to mechanical overloading and risk muscle strains and even tears in the shortened postural muscles.

The goal of treatment with the MUSCLE BALANCE AND FUNCTION DEVELOPMENT® SYSTEM is the restoration of the short, weak postural muscles and the reconnection of the body as a whole functioning unit

Effects of Misalignment on Muscular and Skeletal Structure(s)

  • Excessive compression forces on articulating regions
  • Increase stress on bones, muscles and cartilaginous tissue
  • Premature wearing of articulating surfaces
  • Decrease ROM of joints
  • Shortened postural muscles causes inhibition of surrounding musculature
  • Decrease muscle fiber activation

Postural muscles activate faster than dynamic muscles.  When postural muscles become weak and contracted, dynamic muscles cannot function properly and cannot be trained or strengthened effectively until the postural problem is corrected.. This is why postural strength, correctness and function must be the first step in rehab.

WHY BEGIN WITH POSTURE

The approach used at the Edmonds Therapeutic and Sports Massage Clinic is to provide manual therapies and exercises to restore the client to pain free functional movement.  It is important to understand that an individual will not fully recover from musculoskeletal pain and injury until their body is restored to a neutral center of gravity or a body that is in correct postural alignment and balanced muscular function.  This approach is based on the laws of physics and gravity. In many clinical situations these fundamental laws are not understood or used to rehab or restore function to the individual.
