Here are some facts about the Philippine Eagle Owl:
PHILIPPINE EAGLE OWL (Bubo philippensis) Length: 508 mm Wing: 341 mm Tail: 170 mm Bill: 47 mm Tarsus: 70 mm Ear tufts: 34 mm Also called the PHILIPPINE HORNED OWL, it is the largest of all the owls in the Philippines. Found in forests and forest edge often near water and coconut plantations. Large and bulky with floppy ear tufts and huge yellow eyes. It has powerful legs for catching vertebrate prey. Two races exist: one in Luzon and Catanduanes (philippensis); another in Mindanao, Samar, Leyte, and Bohol (mindanensis). It has been listed in the 2000 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as being 'Vulnerable' due to its declining population. This is said to be the result of extensive deforestation and hunting. It is estimated that there are only about 2,500-10,000 of these birds left. |
