Introduced in 1997, Japan Railways' JR500 "Nozomi" remains the fastest train in Japan. This train is used on the Sanyo/Tokaido line, connecting Tokyo to Hakata/Fukuoka via Nagoya, Kyoto and Osaka.
At one point this train held the world record for the fastest train in the world (Excluding MAGLEV). I am not sure who held the current world record, as the French, Germans, and Japanese have been duking it out for years. Even if it does not hold the current world record, it certainly is far more stylish than the French and German counterparts. It is absolutely the way to travel in Japan.
I had the opportunity to travel on the Tokyo to Osaka route. The journey takes approximately 2.5 hours, saving about 3 hours city to city travel when using an airplane!
This webpage
is a photo album of my experience in this fast and stylish train. It also
serves as a document (when needed) for this truly quinessential Japanese
experience.

Note: Taking pictures while the train is moving is difficult. You'll never know when the next electric pole may block your view!
