Miracles Review

Miracles is what Jackie sonsiders his grand achievement as directing goes. It does have a great look to it, and the sets are great. The plot of the movie is best summed up as Chan is a poor boy who comes to China and loses all of his money right away. He befriends a woman who sells roses, she tells him that they are lucky, he buys one and right away he becomes the head of a respected gang. He tries to make the gang not so bad, and after a quick fight he wins their respect. he keeps buying flowers from the woman, who writes letters to her daughter telling her that she's rich and well know by everyone, even though she isn't. Chan, know as the fellow gangsters as Big Brother, hires a young singer (Anita Mui) to perform at a club, that Chan makes criminal-free. He is always being followed by an uncoordinated policeman, that never gets to a fight or crime scene on time. In the first hour there is a spectacular fight in a resturant, wih chairs, fans, a staircase, well, you have to see it to believe it. Meanwhile, the flower lady gets a letter from her daughter telling her that she will come over to visit soon. The woman faints, knowing that if the daughters' fiances' family doesn't approve of her, they may not be married. Chan finds her, along with the singer (Mui) and a few gangsters. Chan promises to help her, and Mui talks to her about what they could do. They decide to put on a mock ball for them, to make it look like the woman was important, and that the many important people there were colse to her. The "Important people" would be gangsters trying to act like the VIPs of the town. Mui is in charge of making them seem important. One of the great scenes was when Mui walks through the hotel, which is all a set, with gold chandeliers, pianos etc. When they go to meet the family, they go home, running into problems at every turn, including the oliceman wanting to meet the fiances father to buy stocks. So the person who poses as the daughters' step-father (Bill Tung) also poses as the fiances' father. Confused? The mock all ends up going good, despite tons of problems, and to fights, including the end fight in a rope factory facing off against tons of Thai boxers.

Some fans have mixed feelings about this movie. Critics didn't like it because of the over 3 hour length, and fans didn't like it for the same reason. Some say it doen't have enough action etc etc. I still liked this movie enough to give it a 9 out of 10. You decide how you like it.
