Tameme: You slept better last night, no cihuanton? Milagros: Of course. You know?, I'm very glad to met Malinalli. I think we'll became very good friends. Tameme: Yes, and you can trust me, she'll be pretty valuable for our mission. Milagros: (Suddenly stopping) Mission? Tameme: (Also stopping, and looking at her facefaulted) Have you forgot why you have a talking dog right by your side? Milagros: No, but... Voice: Milly! Right then, as accostumed, Dolores was walking to them, so they had to kept quiet. Dolores: Hi!, How that bathrooms treated you? Milagros: Quite better than I thought. I even had an unexpected help. Dolores: Help cleaning bathrooms!? Wow! I didn't know we had some masochistics in our school, and who... In that moment, a few meters from the school's entrance, a bus stopped and form it went down a group of students. At the end, isolated, came an isolated girl with dark blue hair, but handless. Milagros: (Walking to the bus) Malinalli! The girl turned to Milagros, ans a smile shined on her face. Malinalli: Hello! (Both kissed their cheeks) How did you arrived home? Milagros: Fine, thanks! Come, I want to introduce you with my best friend. Hey, Lola! But Dolores did something Milly never expected: Was retreating to the school. She looked like scared, or at least with a deep disliking. Dolores: I... I... just remember that... that I must meet a mate before class. See you later! (She ran to the school). Milagros: (Sweatdropping) B-but, what the...? (She turned all blushed to Malinalli) I'm really sorry. I can't understand what happened to her. But Malinalli was just looking to the school's door. She knew that kind of reactions quite well. =========================================== Yaocihuatl Coyolxauhqui's Codex Amoxtli Ce: The Long Way to Redemption. Amatl Macuilli: Friendships at Stake (Part I). By Mahtlactli Atl. =========================================== Milagros' Natural Sciencies class went out to recess a few minutes before the bell, and she went to the back yard of the school. She had to pass in front of the technical drawing workshop, where Malinalli's group was still in class. Malinalli was sitted at the back of the classroom, by her side was a strange "box" with her drawing points and inking cones. On her right stump was strapped one of her velcro bands, this one with a cone-case adapted. She had also a tennis headband on her head, because apparently the effort made her sweat a lot. She had to make ample moves with her arms and body to overcome her lack of wrists. But whe seemed to know what she was doing, and was able to change her cones with impressive speed. Some of her classmate were looking at her like tired of the "clicketty-clack" sound her box made each time she changed a cone. Malinalli ended her drawing a few moments before the bell rang. Milagros was able to see her work while she carried it to her teacher, and felt quite impressed with the result. She felt that maybe some of her mates where more jealous by her skills than upset by her noises. Milagros: (Thinking) Wow! Surely this girl has some tricks under her sleeve. Followed by her classmates, no one talking to her, malinalli went out of the classroom. Milagros. Hi!, you really surprised them. Malinalli. (A little distracted) Eh?, Oh, Hello... But Milagros perceived a little worry on her friend's eyes. Milagros: Something wrong? Malinalli: Who, me?, no, no... Milagros: (With a smile) Well, I came to see if you have not a date for lunch. Malinalli: (Smiling back) I must look on my agenda, but I'll make a hole. Milagros: Where? Where the "mysterious hand" left you a note? Malinalli: (Giggling) It works for me. Milagros: Let's go. They arrived to the place, and prepared to eat. Milagros:What do you have? Malinalli: Let's see. (Holding her sandwich with both stumps, she puts it near her nose) Hmm! Ham with soya beans and peanut butter. Milagros. Whaaaat? Are you pregnant? Malinalli: Hey!, You should know how many proteins this "babe" has. Besides, I love how it tastes. Milagros: Surely better than how it sounds. Malinalli: Let's see. What do you have? Milagros: (Faking a big sneeze) Ssssnnnnffff!!!!! Yummy, yummy. Chicken on red "mole". Malinalli: Whaaat??? Chili at this time on the morning? Do you how many damage it can do to your stomach? After a little silence, both started to laugh, then, Milagros looked at her friend Dolores. Milagros: Hey, Lola! Lola! But she kept walking as if she ain't listened her shout, but could not hide that she accelerated a little. Milagros: If it weren't by her walking, I can swear she didn't listen me. I don't know what's happening to her. Malinalli: I do. Milagros looked her friend surprised. She was looking her own shadow, and looked very sad. Milagros: What do you mean? Malinalli: Well, you know... Since my accident I've met two kinds of people: those with a deep rejection and those who try to overprotect me. Well... I mean, I'm afraid your friend Lola is in the first group. Milagros: Waht are you saying? Come, on, you must be wrong! Lola isn't that way! Malinalli: (Rising her eyes a little) Yes, probably you did not know it, and even herself didn't knew it either, but to meet so closely a handicapped may cause weird reactions in the people. Trust me, I know it by experience. A lot of people that I really trusted in, turned their backs on me after it happened. Milagros: (Trying to lift up her) But don't feel sad! You should have heard the things Lola told me when she met me. Malinalli: That's not the main fact... Milagros: ????? Malinalli: I´m upset because I can became an obstacle for your friendship with Dolores, and you don't deserve it, but I know quite well it can happen. (Laughing bitterly) As you see, I´m not even an easy-to-keep friend... (A tear ran down her cheek). Milagros: (Standing quickly) Well, I keep saying you're wrong. To test it, why don't you come to my american football training session after school? Malinalli: What?? You play american football!? Milagros: Alright, alright, that's "flag football" indeed. Stop looking me as if I had Schwarzenegger's muscles. Who's prejudicing now? Malinalli: Sorry... I shouldn't... Suddenly both noticed they were again at the principal's office scene, but with changed dialogues, and once again they laughed. Milagros: Well, then we have a deal. You'll come to my practice. Malinalli: Hey, wait... Milagros: Nah, nah, it's a deal. Who knows? Maybe you'll find a hidden talent, or a new romance... (She gives her slight elbow touches on her arm) The men team practices "real" football before us... Malinalli: (Blushing) Hey! What are you saying? At that precise moment the bell rang, finishing the recess. Milagros: Oh, God, back to hell. Which is your next class? Malinalli: Spanish. And yours? Milagros: Typewriting. Puagh, I hate it! Well, I'll see you after school. Malinalli: I guess I have no choice, or I'll face Tuchmetztli's hurricane wrath. Milagros: Holy! How do you learnt my last name so fast? Malinalli: (Smiling again) He, he. Well, let's go. They began walking in opposite directions. Malinalli: Hey, Milly! (Both girls stop) Thanks for all, but don't loose your friends for me. Milagros: Too late. It also includes you. The final bell of the day sounded at two o'clock. Malinalli headed to the Folk Dance Workshop, because she knew that was Milly's last class. And in fact, her class was still at the shop, and it lokked like professor L—pez wasn't very happy with his group's performance. Mr. L—pez: ...Well, young ladies, we'll not leave til you all do it well! Let's start again. The violin's notes of the La Huasteca region's music sounded again, just when Maly found Milly in front of the group. She was dancing with a big smile, and her feet were performing quickly and gracefully. This time, Malinalli was the one who couldn't hide her admiration. Ten minutes later mister L—pez felt mercy for his group and let go. Milagros grabbed quickly her things and ran to the door, where whe grabbed Malinalli's arm. Milagros: "H’jole", I'm too late!, Let's hurry, or Samuel will make me run five more laps to the field! Malinalli: That many? But milly was not only hurried by her delay. She wished to take Malinalli away from some dislikeable comments that were running at her own classroom. In front of a cross-drawn board, two men were playing a Patolli match. Stripped-face: Time is coming, but I'm afraid Quetzalcoatl is also increasing his strenght. We should take care of him before Tlilcoatl time. Skulled-face: And what about the Yaocihuameh [Warrior-women]? Stripped: Hmm, you're right, and that's another reason to hurry up on our plans. I think it's time to send some other kind of Mictlacatecolotl. Skull: It'll be done, It'll be done. (He throws the dice) No signs of my wife? Stripped: Not yet. But don't worry. I'm not forgetting it. Skull: I hope you hurry on it. Back to my demons, do you have something in mind? Stripped: In fact, yes. Currently we've used demons which make a too poor use of their victims' capabilities. I guess we'll have better results of we can make a better use of the "macehuales" (plebeians) they posses. Skull: Well. I'm sure I'll have something you'll approve. (He throws the dice again) And with this. I win. (The stripped-face man looks at the board facefaulted) I'm sorry, but those are the risks of Patolli. (He takes the cacao grains that were the bet, and leaves). Stripped: (To himself) Just for now, my friend. Just for now... Milagros and Malinalli reached the field just when Manuel was about to blow his whistle to start the warm-up. Tameme was already with the girls. Milagros: Coach!, coach...! Manuel: Safe at home, "Tuca"!, Where were you? Milagros: (Trying to take breath) I... I'm... so-sorry. I'm late... because of... 'cause of... dance class. Bertha: Well, the important fact is that you're here. Get ready. Milagros: (Breathing better) Coach Domínguez, I brought a friend with me. There's no problem if she looks our practice? Bertha: Not at all. In fact, I'll like to meet her. Milagros: Really? Oh, thank you, coach! (Both go to the stands). Coach, this is my friend Malinalli Gonz‡lez. Maly, my coach Bertha Dom’nguez. Malinalli didn't knew what to think, but she never expected all the familiarity and warm that woman gave to her. Bertha: It's a pleasure to meet you, Malinalli. When the coach kissed her cheek, she felt something really special, as if that woman were a lifetime friend. Malinalli: So-sorry. Have we met before? Bertha: I don't think so, but I feel you are a very special person. Do you want to practice with us? Malinalli: (Defensively) Football, me? Don't you see...? Bertha: (Interrumpting) Flag-football is like american football because it's a team game for many kinds of people, and each player is as important as any other. Your arms are long enough to try out for wide receiver. Also, a new rule allows field goals, you can try for a kicker spot! Malinalli felt very well with the confidence that woman showed for her, but she was not in the mood to try. Malinalli: I really thank you, but "panbol" is my game ["panbol" is a despective way as american football players nickname soccer] Bertha: Alright, but if you change your mind, just warm-up a little and come to the field. It looks that you take good care of yourself, and so I know you know how to make a warm-up. Are you agree? Malinalli: (Smiling) OK, thank you. Bertha: Alright, Milly, the gridiron awaits for us. Milagros: Thank you very much, coach. (Bertha walks to the field, while Milly stops a little with Maly) Do you see that I'm not a "museum piece"? Malinalli: I must admit that this was worth the visit. Now go, or you'll be punished! (Manuel blowed his whistle again). Manuel: Tuca! How much longer? Milagros: I'm coming, I'm coming! (She runs to the field). Malinalli: (To Tameme, who fakes is sleeping) Hey, Tameme. Why I felt so special when that woman spoke to me? Tameme: If you both knew... During warm-ups and general drills everything went on fine, but at the specialized drills, problems began. While Manuel took some girls to practice defense, Bertha took the other half to the other side of the field, near the main stands, to practice passing. Milagros and Dolores were among this group. Suddenly, when Milagros ran a pass to the band, Dolores overthrow her unexplicably, sending the football right were Malinalli was sitted. But this time she was ready. With a fast arm move, she batted the ball upward, and it descended softly to her arms. Bertha: Dolores! what was that? Dolores: I'm sorry, it slept form me. Not quite convinced, Bertha continued the drill, but five minutes later the scene repeated. Bertha: Dolores, if you continue this way, I'll have to look for a backup. Dolores: (Looking at her with a challenge) I'm sorry. Milagros: What happens to you, Lola? Dolores: (Angrily) I said I'm sorry! OK? A few minutes later, when Milagros was ready to receive, Dolores threw the ball unashamely to the other side, right to Malinalli again. She was ready, but a man's hand took the ball a few inches in front of her face. Man: Jeez! Undoubtely she's the worst passer I've ever seen. What's strange is that I saw her before, and usually she's not as bad. Malinalli: Thank you very much. Milagros: (Going for the ball) Ball, plea...!, Wow, you are the guy who helped us save my dog! Malinalli and Tameme turned, and then the dog remembered him. Malinalli: You both already knew each other? Man: Something like that. You're the girl with the weird last name, aren't you? Milagros: (Facefaulted) Hey, I just want to thank you for that day! Besides, I don't know your name. Man: That's true, sorry. my name is Donaj’ De la Paz. Milagros: (Sweatdropped) Donaj’ de la Paz! And YOU say my name is weird? Both would keep arguing, but Malinalli suddenly lifted form her seat, and began to walk like leaving the field. Milagros: Hey, Malinalli, wait! But at a small door on the verge, she turned and began to jog right where Milagros was. Milagros: But... Malinalli. (Running next to her) Tell coach Dom’nguez to call me when kicking drills begin, will you, please? (Keeps jogging) Milagros: The coach...? Holy..., the practice! Ball, please! Donaj’: Eh? (He looks the ball in his hand, and blushes) Oh, yes, here you are! Milagros. Thanks. I see you later! Malinalli kept jogging til completing three laps to the field, and then began stretching while kicking drills began. When they started, many of the girls failed to connect field goals from a mere 25 yards. Just Dolores, and hardly, had made two good ones. Bertha: (Sweatdropped) I'm afraid we'll have to play on each chance... (To Malinalli) Hey, girl, are you ready? Malinalli: (Walking from the other side of the field) Move it 10 yardas back, coach! All of the girls looked at each other. They cannot believe what that "invalid" girl was saying. Bertha just smiled. Bertha: OK. Mayra, you center!, Dolores, you hold! Malinalli: (Walking to Milagros) Hey, Milly. What size are your shoes? Milagros: What? Malinalli: I kick better with tennis shoes than sandals. Milagros: two and a half. They fit you? Malinalli: Like gloves! Please, borrow me the right one. Milagros: You better use both, but will you really try from 35 yards? Malinalli: Weren't you saying that I "really have some ases under my sleeve? But while Malinalli was putting on Milly's shoes, Dolores told something to Mayra. The three girls took their places. Lola was looking Malinalli strangely, while she was concentrated on the goal posts. Mayra prepared to center, and right when she started a whistle sounded. The ball flew right to Malinalli's face, but Bertha took it on its fly. Bertha: Milagros, you center! Dolores: Hey, what are... Bertha: Zamudio, you can go home now. Your practice is over! Dolores: (Really angry) But how do you...? Bertha: Obviously you aren't on your best day. Think what you've done calmly, and come back here tomorrow. Dolores: (To her cousin) Manuel, do something! Manuel: Hey, Bertha... Bertha: (With authority) If you wish, she can watch the kicking drill, but you can't deny her attitudes today need a disciplinary punishment. Manuel looked to Bertha and Dolores, and he merely had to look down. Dolores: What?, Manuel!! Bertha: Tuca, you center, I'll hold the ball! Milagros agreed, but looked worried to Malinalli and Dolores, trying to understand what happened to the last one. Bertha: (Standing seven yardas apart form Milagros, and downing a knee on the 35 yard line, speaks to Maly) Alright, don't forget you have seven seconds after the center. Malinalli: (Looking fixedly to the place where the ball will be placed) I'm ready. Bertha kept looking Malinalli a little, and smiled. Then she turned to Milagros. Bertha: Ready, Milly? Don't forget to kneel after you throw. Milagros: Al-alright. Bertha noticed the inner fight in her, and she worried too, but decided to go on. Bertha: Set? HUT! Milagros centered and then put her left knee on the field. Bertha received, and when placing the ball, Malinalli started her approach. She kicked with a very good technique, and the pigskin flew clearly over the low post..., the clubs offices, and even the street in front of the field. The ball stroke on the ceiling of a near house. If the ball would have needed to fly 60 yards, malinalli would have connected. All the girls of the team were amazed. Bertha: Excellent! You really won't to make the team? But Malinalli was looking to Milagros, who returned an strange look. Then the handicapped girl looked down. Malinalli: I... am sorry, coach... but as I already told you... I'm a "panballer". She ran where her things were. Tameme arised to tell her something but remembered Donaj’ was still sitted by his side. Malinalli: (To Donaj’) Please, give me my bag, will you? Donaj’: Of course. After taking her school's things, she took off Milly's shoes, and took a pair of replace sandals she always had in her bag. Milagros seemed to react, and walked to her. Milagros: Malinalli, you wait... Malinalli: NO! Milagros stopped right there. Malinalli looked at her, and then returned a faked smile. Malinalli: I mean, you have the right to think about all of this. Please do it. I see you tomorrow, OK? Milagros didn't answered, she only looked at Maly running away, and then looked to her tennis shoes, left where her friedn was. She scanned for Dolores, but she had already go. Then she remained there, looking to the ground, fists closed thightly. (To be continued...) ============================================== END OF CHAPTER 5
