Malinalli was sitted behind Milagros' favourite tree, preparing to eat one of her so liked amaranto bars. Malinalli: (To herself) That's weird. I haven't seen Milagros today... Voice: Hi! May I sit with you? Malinalli looked up and found Dolores, Milagros' best friend. Malinalli: Come on. Have you seen Mily today? Lola: I was about to ask you the same. I haven't. Malinalli: (Sighing) Nope, and to be honest, I'm feeling a bit worried. Lola: (Trying to change the subject) Isn't it remarkable how the basket court gets crowded when the new girl plays? Malinalli: You mean, Ilhuicamina, Mily's classmate? You must recognize she's quite good for basketball. Then, both heard a male voice from the other side of the wall. Voice: Is Miss Malinalli González around? Both girls surprised, but Malinalli also sweatdropped. Was Tameme the one speaking?! Lola: (Jumping and placing her forearms over the fence in anger) What are you looking for?! (She the facefaults, scans everywhere and sweatdrops) Where did he go? Hey, Maly, here's no-...! Wait! This isn´t Mily's dog? Malinalli face turned pale. Then, she felt something really bad was happening. =========================================== Yaocihuatl Coyolxauhqui's Codex Amoxtli Ce: The Long Way to Redemption. Amatl Mahtlactli uan Yei (Chapter 13): Bertha´s Quest. By: Mahtlactli Atl. ============================================ Malinalli: (Really nervous) Re-really? I have to take him back home! Lola: Come on, you're overacting! I'm more worried about who was calling you? There's nobody around... Malinalli: But Tameme had never came here without Mily! What if the dog pound catches him? Besides, maybe Milagros is sick, or something. I must go see her. Lola: Then I go with you. Malinalli turned pale again. She wouldn't be able to speak freely with Lola around, mainly if was something related to "the Club". Lola: No... wait! DAMN!! I forgot we have a surprise exam by the next hour! After breathing in relief and mentally blessing Lola's teacher... Malinalli: D-don't worry. I'll say Mily you tried to see her. If nothing weird happens, maybe we'll go to the football field. Lola: Please, calle me, whatever it is! I'll go there after school! Malinalli: And your training session? Lola: Who damn cares about it? I'll tell my cousin! Malinalli: (Smiling and touching Lola's shoulder with her stump) Thanks... I'll tell you whatever happens! (She goes running to her classroom for her stuff) Barbara was playing at the nearby court, when she felt a weird "chill" going down her spine. Not knowing why, right when she had the ball back she charged to the basket, dribbling two rivals, and then jumping to the basket with all of her might. She slam dunked the ball so hard, that the weak basket broke apart from the board, ending hung around her arm! The Phys. Ed. Teacher and the vice-principal arrived when they her the clapping and cheers Barbara's action arised, and but facefaulted in shock. Answering the applause, all that Barbara did, was to hand the ring to the vice-principal. Barbara: I gotta go. Teacher: Bu-bu-bu-bu-but what did you do, "Mikami"? Vice-principal: Mi-mi-miss Ilhuicamina, you must come with me... Barbara: (Going away jumping) My "old man" will take care of this, I swear! Then, she went running to the school entrance. Malinalli went out running to the nearest bus stop, when a shiny car screeched next to her. Barbara: (Openning the car's door) Come in, hurry! Malinalli: Wait! Here comes Tameme! Mily's back "Xoloitzcuintli" came running to the car at full speed. Malinalli: (Letting Tameme to jump inside the car) Hurry up! Bárbara: LET'S GO! (She closed the door even before finishing to close back the door at Malinalli's side). Malinalli: What's happening, Tameme? Tameme: (Worried and scared) It's... it's "No Cihuanton"! Something's terribly wrong! Malinalli: But what's happening to her?! Tameme: I really don't know! I'm afraid... She's remembering...! Malinalli: Remembering? Remembering what?! Tameme: (Doubting and blushing) Some of her past... Malinalli: Her past? You mean her past life?? Tameme: Please, don't ask me more, No Cihuanton. I shouldn't tell before at least seven Yaocihuameh are gathered and ready to face Tezcatlipoca! Malinalli: Don't tell me this stuff now! I...! Barbara: (Placing a hand over Malinalli's arm) Cool down, girl... Malinalli and Tameme turned surprised to see Barbara. They never imaginated one day she would be the one to ask calm to them, the "minds" of the group. If they weren't so worried, surely they would have laughed. Malinalli: Forgive me, Tameme. Tameme: No. You forgive me, No Cihuanton. Malinalli: By the way, Barbie, how did you know? Bárbara:(Scratching her head) To be honest, I still don't know what's happening. Malinalli and Tameme: (Sweatdropping in unison) What?? Barbara: I felt... I felt something weird... like an urge to come... (She tries to smile) Honesty, I just know what you both were arguing right now... and I "felt" something wrong about "Grandma"... (She drops out another of her "Esmeraude-style" laughs, this time a bit worried, and turned to Tameme) I must be crazy. Don't you think so, "baldy"? Malinalli: (Touching Barbara's arm with her left stump, and smiling gratefully) You're not at all, I assure you. Thank you... A few minutes later, Barbara parked in front Tuchmetztli's house, Being Ameyali the one who welcomed them. They talk while entering the house. Malinalli: Hello, Ame. When did you arrive? Ameyali: A little bit ago. Purita called me. We've been knocking at Milagros's door, but she just don't answers! Barbara: And where is "Pirinolita"? Ameyali: She locked herself to pray at eher room. I think she's too frightened! Malinalli: What about Mily's parents? And her brother? Ameyali: Purita says that they went to a bullfight at Tlaxcala, where Servando would perform. We haven't found the hotel's phone number. Tameme: Don't waste more time, please! You must get in!! Malinalli: That's true! Ameyali, why don't you go with Purita, while Barbara and myself try to convince her to open? Ameyali: OK. We'll catch you there. They went upstairs, and while Ameyali headed to the attic, Barbara and Malinalli went to Mily's room. Malinalli: It's right here. (She gently kicks the door to call) Milagros? (She kicks again) It's me, Malinalli! (Tries to open with her stumps) I can't! This door is locked! Barbara: My turn. (She tries to turn the pear a couple of times, and then knocks with her fist) Grandma! If you don't open right now, I swear you I'll put you into an asile! Tameme: (From inside the room) Oh, Gods...! HELP ME IN HERE, PLEASE!! Both Malinalli and Barbara sweatdropped. Barbara: How the #$"#$ you entered there, "pup"? Tameme: How can you care about it now!! Malinalli: Tameme! Can you unlock the door? Tameme: How can I do it? Malinalli: Some knobs have an smaller lock, others must be pulled in, and sometimes you just have to turn them from the inside. Try it! The door was of the second kind, and the girls opened right when listening a click. Malinalli: It's open! (tripping, she and Barbara entered) Milagros, Wha...? Malinalli freezed looking at Milagros' bed, and a shout of terror went out of her throat. Barbara: OH, MY GOD!! (She said in english). Then, Ameyali and Purita came running. Ameyali: What's...?!! When they arrived, the four girls stood freezed in shock, looking to the scene. Milagros was laying on her bed facing downward, like dead, with a horrible stain of blood at the back of her pajamas. Malinalli: (Crying and going all-fours to her) No... It can't be... Who did this to her???! Tameme: (Licking Milagros' back and avoiding the girls' stare) Nobody... nobody came in here last night... Barbara: Don't tell me she didi this to herself!! Tameme: Of course not! (Then he moves away to Milagros, and heads to Purita) No Cihuanton... (Purita don't reacts, still looking in pain to Milagros) No Cihuanton! Slowly, Purita stared at Tameme. Tameme: You must try it... please... Purita turned to the others, like looking for support. Ameyali and Malinalli went to her, pathing her shoulders. Malinalli: Go ahead, please... Ameyali: Only you can do it... Purita accepted with a brief smile, turned to Milagros with a deep breath, blessed herself and took the Nahuiollin she had hanging at her neck. Then she raised it, looking for the sun, and shouted. Purita: TO NANTZIN YOLLOXOCHITL, AXCAN!! Purita transformed into Yaocihuatl Tlazolteotl, but she knew that the hard part was just about to start. She walked to Milagros' body, and sitted by her side. For a moment she doubted if she had to turn her facing up and touch her cheeks like the first time. She closed her eyes and rised her face, like searching for guideance in herself or heaven. Then, carefully, she opened the back of Milagros' pajamas. All of the girls noticed that it wasn't one, but two deep wounds that Milagros had on her back. Malinalli: My... God...! Barbara: It seems... (She quiets). Ameyali: (Shaking Barbara) What?! What it seems?! Barbara: It seems... they nailed her with bullfighting darts! Malinalli: (Turning in rage) WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?? Barbara: The Old Man frequently took me to Fair Bullfights when he was municipality president! I tell you those seem like scars from darts used in bullfighting! Ameyali: But that's a nonsense! Her brother would never do something like this, no matter how hideous! Besides, do you see any bullfighting darts around? Tameme: SHADDAP, FOR ALL MIGHTY GODS SAKE!! The girls turned to Tameme and Tlazolteotl, looking at them. Both turned down, and Malinalli and Ameyali joined their hands, like praying. Tlazolteotl looked back to Milagros' wounds, and carefully placed her fingertips over them. Then she concentrated, closed her eyes and turned her face up to the sky. She breathed hard, and then claimed: Tlazolteotl: COCOXCATZINTLI, CUALLI IC XINEMI! A white light began to glow from Tlazolteotl's hands, and increased its intensity until turning blindly. It decreased back slowly, and with it, wounds had dissappeared. All of the girls stood awaiting in silence. After a few moments, Milagros moved a bit and tried to stand up. For a moment, all of the other girls cried in relief, but then quieted again, when they saw Milagros embracing Tlazolteotl desperately and crying uncontrollably, with sobs which seemed like pain shouts. Malinalli went tripping to her, and when she touched Milagros, she hugged her the same desperate way, almost unable to see her and crying with all of her strenght. Ameyali ran out of the room. Malinalli: (Trying to stop her own tears) Mily... Mily... What happened here? A little later, Ameyali returned with a glass of soda. Ameyali: Milagros... (Milagros was unable to stop crying) MILAGROS! (Milagros, Malinalli and Tlazolteotl turned to her) Sip this, slowly. You've cried too much. Barbara: What's that? Ameyali: Apple soda with a bit of salt. That's what we use in my diving team when we cannot buy rehydrating drinks. Milagros had to fight her own handshake to drink what Ameyali gave her. All of the others stood silent until she finished, and felt back on the bed. Ameyali: Are you feeling better now? Milagros just said yes shaking her head. Malinalli: Do you remember what happened? She affirmed again. Malinalli: What it was? Milagros: (Quite weakly) My... the nightmare... Barbara: The nightmare? What's that? Malinalli: Since Milagros knew about her other self, she's having a recurrent nightmare, seemingly related with her past life... Barbara: And will you tell me A NIGHTMARE did that to her??! Milagros affirmed furiously, covering her face with both hands while new tears flowed. Tlazolteotl: Calm down, Milagros, Please! Do you want to sleep again? Milagros: (Sitting up suddenly and shaking Tlazolteotl with wide-open etes) NO, PLEASE! Malinalli: (Hugging her) MILY, MILY! CALM DOWN!! Milagros: Don't let me sleep again, for God's sake! Don't let me sleep again! Barbara went to her, and shaked her as hard as she could. Milagros stared at her surprised. Barbara: Cool down, Grandma!! (Stops shaking her but keeps grabbing her arms) Let's make a deal: We'll not let you sleep, but you will tell us about this nightmare stuff, because at least myself don't catch a damn about this thing, and tell us what happened now. OK? Milagros looked at her fixedly, and Barbara shook her again. Berbara: IT'S A DEAL?! Milagros: (Looking down) Yes... Ameyali: Well, we better go down to hall.. And, Purita, detransform yourself. Tlazolteotl: Jesus, Maria and Jose! You all go ahead, I must look for the phone number of Mister's hotel room. Milagros: (Grabbing her arm while Ameyali and Barbara were helping her to stand up) Don't do it, Purita! (Tlazolteotl looked at her, and she looked back with pleading eyes) Not to them, please... Tlazolteotl: But... I must... Milagros: I'll be fine... I promise... Tameme: Let's go downstairs. You just detransform, No Cihuanton. A little later, all of the girls were sitted at the table, and Malinalli was trying to explain them what Milagros told her about the nightmare. Barbara: ...and that dark knife burns your hand? Oh, my! Ameyali: But, Mily, until now it hadn't go farther. Isn't it? Milagros affirmed. Ameyali: And now? What happened? Malinalli: That's true! Milagros, something went different this time? Milagros: (Weakly) Yes... too much... Purita: Tell us. Milagros told them about the nightmare, which began identically to the previous times. Then she told them how the Eagle Cavalier tried to defend her, just to be taken away by a river suddenly appearing, and how after that, her hand was forced again to grab that obsidian knife. Milagros: ...and then... Malinalli: ¿Then? Milagros: (Crying again) ...then... Malinalli stood up and hugged her, while Milagros covered again her face with both hands. Milagros: Then the nightmare grew up again! All of the girls stared at each other, while Milagros talked back about her dream, while remembering. Coyolxauhqui: My hand? YYYYYEAAAARGHH!! I'M BURNIIIIIING!! Voice: Now go, my dear one, and fulfill your destiny. Coyolxauhqui: NOOO! I WONT!!!! Then, if pain wasn't already enough, she felt a sharp pain burning her back. Coyolxauhqui: YYEEEEEAAAAAAARRGGHH!! Her vision blurred by the pain, and she tried to fall to the ground, but the knife denied her to do it. She tried to look back, and for a moment she looked a decoyed stick which should be hanging on her back, because at immediately hided from her view, and then... Then she looked her brother Servando, staring at her in profile, wearing the "light suit" he used in bullfighting, and wearing a weird mask over his eyes. Coyolxauhqui: Brother! Help me, please!! Voice: I'm so sorry, my little one, but this is also a part of your destiny. She, terrified scanned for the voice source. Coyolxauhqui: What are you talking about? Then, she looked back to her brother, and slowly, he displayed... the sword he used to kill bulls! Coyolxauhqui: NNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! All of the vision turns black, and a red line of blood appeared briefly. Purita: CUT IT OOOOOOUUUUUUT!!! Milagros was taken out of her memories by Purita's shout. She was now crying and embracing her, knelt by her feet. All of her friends had tears in their eyes, including Barbara. Barbara: I swear you I'll kick your brother's butt if a have him at reach... Ameyali: Don't say nonsense, will you? Milagros: (Thankfully) Girls... I'm sorry. I guess I just overacted, but... Then Milagros silenced, like remembering something in shock. Then lowered her look to meet Purita's. Milagros: Purita, why were you transformed?? Purita's face turned pale with thar question. Milagros: OH, MY GOD! Reacting too fast to be stopped by the other, Milagros rushed to her room. Tameme: No Cihuanton! WAIT!! But Milagros had never rushed upstairs so fast in her life. When she reached her room, she saw her bed made up. Then she took all of the clothes out of her dirt clothes basket, and found her blanket with blood. Milagros: Oh, no! It was... It was true! (She knelt down with the blanket in her arms). Malinalli: Milagros. Milagros: (To Tameme) Tameme, what all if this means? Tameme: No-No Cihuanton. Barbara: You must explain her... Milagros: Tell me what the heck is happening!! Then, the house bell rang. Milagros: Nobody answer! A female voice: Good afternoon! Anybody home? Malinalli: (Whispering) Is your Flag-Football coach! Milagros: Damn! Who left the door open? Barbara: But I'm sure I closed the door! Voice: Somebody's here? Milagros: I'm coming! (Whispers angrily to Tameme) We'll talk later (Goes downstairs, followed by the others). Tameme: Thank you, my Goddess... Milagros: (From the stairs) Coach Domínguez... Bertha: Hello, Milagros. Dolores told me maybe you were sick. How are you? Milagros: Fine. Well, feeling better now. I guess you already know Malinalli, Purita and Barbara. Bertha: Barbara only by sight. We have not been introduced, but maybe she already nicknamed me. Barbara: (Blushing funny while the others looked at her accusingly) Barbara Ilhuicamina... Sorry about that day... Bertha: Nice to meet you, Barbara, and I was only joking. Alright? Milagros: And this is my friend Ameyali Alvarez. She lives at Naucalpan. Bertha: Nice to meet you, Ameyali. You've travelled a lot to visit Milagros. Ameyali: What friend are for? (Offers her hand) Nice to meet you. When Bertha took her hand, Ameyali had the same weird feeling than the others. Bertha: Something's wrong? Ameyali: No... (Tries to smile while sweatdropping) Nothing! Ha, ha! Nevermind! Bertha: Milagros, can I talk to you privately? Barbara looked upstairs, and saw Tameme displaying terrified eyes and shaking his head in denial. You could say he was feeling sick, and Barbara moved her lips saying "you deserve it" to him. Milagros: Privately? Why? Bertha: Milagros, I'm really worried about you. I don't want to talk you as a coach, but as a friend. All of the girls looked to the purple-haired woman, and almost by reflex... Malinalli: She's right. Milagros, I don't know why, but I believe your coach can help you. Milagros. OK. Miss Bertha, let's go to my room. Excuse me, girls. Ameyali: That's OK. Go Ahead. Milagros and Miss Domínguez went upstairs to Mily's room. After they closed the door, Tameme went down, trying to escape the house. Ameyali: Tameme! You owe Milagros an explanation! Tameme: (Showing his teeth) GET... OUT...!! The girls had never seen Tameme so angry. Obviously, the tension had been too much for him. Barbara: Hey! What are you...? Tameme: I SAID GET OUT OF MY WAY!! Malinalli: No. Tameme looked at her growling, and Malinalli knelt in her site. Malinalli: Tameme, I'll not ask you a thing. Tameme stopped his growling, while tears began to run down his eyes, as well as Malinalli's. Malinalli: None of us knows about our mission better than you, and if anything prevents you to tell us... no matter what... I respect... and trust you. Tameme closed his muzzle. Malinalli: (Starting to hiccup through her crying) and I... and I respect your silence... not by... not by the mission itself... You... You know why? Tameme denied. Malinalli: Because... (Opens her arms to the dog) Because... you're my friend too! Tameme: (Running to her) I CAN'T TAKE THIS ANYMORE! (HE jumps into her arms, crying uncontrollably). Purita: (Kneeling to caress him) Sorry, "puppy". You'll know when to tell us. Ameyali: We trust in you and Milagros... no matter what. Barbara: (Moving her hands to her backhead, and resting her back at the nearest wall) I understand less and less about all of this... All of the others looked at her, and she made another of her horrible laughs. Milagros sitted on her bed, while Bertha took a nearby chair. Both stood quiet a few moments. Milagros: Coach, I'm sorry for not going to the special sessio- Bertha: (Interrupting her) Milagros, I already told you I'm not her as your coach, but as your friend. And before you tell me your trouble, let me tell you about one of my own. Milagros: (Really surprised) You have a problem? Bertha: Yes... You'll see... Well. Have you never asked yourself why I came so suddenly to the team? Milagros: (After a few moments thinking her answer) No. Not really. I assumed you were a friend of Manuel... I mean, coach Zamudio. Bertha: (Smiling frankly) It's OK. Manuel is not the kind of person offended by that things. I think that character is precisely which allows him to be a female football coach. But that's not the point... Milagros: What is it? Bertha: You'll see... I'm looking for my children. Milagros: (In shock) Your children?? But are you a mother??! Bertha: Single mother, to be honest... Milagros: But... but It can't be! You look so young... Bertha: Thnak you, Mily. May I call you this way? Milagros: (Smiling for the first time that day) Please, I prefer it a million times than "Tuca". Bertha: You'll see. My problem is that my children were took away from me. Milagros: How? How many are they? Bertha: Two, a boy and a girl. Milagros: Both of them out of marriage? Bertha: (Standing up and walking to the window) No. Only the boy, the youngest one. The saddest part is that my girl was unable to accept the fact, and we had a lot of problems about it. Milagros: (Shyly) And... they ran away? Bertha: (Looking outside while sighing) I don't know... Milagros: You don't know? What do you mean about it? Bertha: Well... my brother, their uncle, always had a big influence over her... he never accepted my situation, and... and I think he took them away from me. Milagros: Your own brother? Excuse me if I tell you, coach, but I think you had a really weird family. Bertha: I guess I cannot deny it... I want to believe that my children are OK, with a loving family, and maybe... maybe she was able to forgive me... Milagros: Forgive you? (Milagros thought a little, and then stood up and went slowly to her coach) Miss Domínguez, can I ask you something? Bertha: Yes? Milagros: Why did you have your son? Bertha: For the same reason I got my daughter: love. Milagros: You loved both of their parents. Bertha: Indeed. Milagros: You tried to force your son's father to your daughter? Bertha: (Turning to Milagros and caressing her hair) You are quite mature for your age, you know? Come, look how beautiful the sky is today. (Milagros stood next to her, and both stared at the heavenly blue) Back to your question, my daughter never knew my second husband. He... died before my son was born. Milagros: I'm sorry, but maybe it was hard for your daughter to accept the arrival of a brother that way, mainly with you being a widow. Bertha: Maybe it was. I was always upset about all that accusingly fingers pointing at me, being my own brother's the worst one. Milagros: You know? I don't know why, but you made me think about Malinalli's uncle. He's an amazing person. Bertha: And what about your parents. Milagros: (Placing her head between her handsm, and saying dreamingly) They're wonderful. Mi mom is my best friend, and mi father... well, he isn't just a great support, he is also a mercyful human being. You know? He didn't just brought Purita to live here, he is also paying her studies, even when people speaks at his back. Bertha: "speaks at his back"? Milagros: Yes... some neighbors chat secretly when Purita goes with me to school, and there are rumors saying that she was an "adventure" of my dad. Bertha: And it don't bothers you? Milagros: No, because I know the true. Bertha: I'm glad to hear you. Do you have brothers? Milagros: Only one, older than me. Bertha: What do you think about him? Milagros: (Sighing) Most of the time he is a complete jerk. He's not satisfied with being cruel and arrogant, he also is a BULLFIGHTER! Honesty, I cannot stand the way he speaks to Purita, and sometimes I feel he hates me with no reason. Bertha: And you still love him? Milagros: What do you mean? Bertha: Yes. Honesty, do you love him even with all of his defects? Milagros crossed her arms in front of herself and placed a cheek above them, looking to her coach. Milagros: Yes. No matter how stupid he is or can become. He is my brother and I still love him. Bertha looked to Milagros with shiny eyes. It seemed that the last answer have moved her more than normally. Bertha: I'm glad to hear you... (She touches again Milagros' hair) You know? I hope my own daughter has turned like you, that she has learned to love people even when people or circumstances guide her otherwise. Milagros: (Grabbing her hands) I'm sure she is. Do you believe your children are around here? Bertha: (Looking outside, trying to avoid Milagros to notice her blushing) Well... I have suspicions. That's why I'm staying here for a while. Milagros: Are you coach Zamudio's girlfriend? Bertha: (After jiggling while covering her mouth with a hand) No. We're just good friends. Do you believe is possible an honest friendship between man and woman, without romance? Milagros: Yes, I do. But... Bertha: (Noticing Milagros' doubts) What's wrong? Milagros: Well. Recently I met a guy..., and I guess we are good friends already, but... Bertha: But you think are you feeling something else about him? Milagros: I don't know. Honestly, I think I'm love with another guy, but... Bertha: But...? Milagros: No, nothing. Bertha: There are trouble between you both? Milagros: Yes. One too big to tell you about it... Bertha: I guess I understand you. If someday you find the word to tell me, and you feel I can help you, don't hesitate to do it. Milagros: Thank you. Bertha: Are you feeling better now? Milagros: Yeah. (She stretches like just waking up) Hmmmm! I really feel a lot better! Bertha: That's great! I must leave now. Milagros: Now? So soon? Bertha: Yes. Manuel took care of the training, but we must arrange some matches. Unfortunately, the weeks Mr. García gave us are running away. You think you'll be able to go to practice tomorrow? Milagros: As things have happened lately, I cannot assure you, but I hope so. Bertha: (Kissing Milagros' head) All of the team will be waiting for you. Don't forget you are very important for all of us. Milagros: Thank you, coach. (Bertha was leaving, when Milagros squeezed her hand gently) I mean it. I really thank you. Bertha: Until, tomorrow, "Metztli". (She goes out). Milagros stared to the sky again, daydreaming, then a question sign appeared over her head. Milagros: (Facefaulted) Eh?! How did she call me? Right then, a red light crossed the sky. Milagros: Oh, no! Not now! (To be continued...) ============================== END OF CHAPTER 13.
