Author's Notes: This was my very first Amelia + Zelgadis fanfic. Its a songfic based on the sing Gone, which was originally written and performed by The Tea Party. Even though this was my first fanfic ever, there have been some major changes applied since the orignal came into being - Notably the ending. The original ending had Amelia take up pursuit of Zel, as I couldn't bring myself to write a sad ending. The ending has since been changed and so it remains.
And no, the charcters and the song used for this fanfic are not owned by me. Nor am I making a single red cent from this piece of fanfiction.
Broken moments in time could still shine
But they’re getting old
If you could see this world in my eyes
You’d be so surprised at what you’d know
Midnight was drawing nearer. The town was quiet. The cold wind howled through the deserted streets. It was a night like this that the chimera, Zelgadis Greywars sat upon the roof of the local tavern and contemplated his future. He shivered. But it wasn’t from the wind, it was from the events that occurred earlier today.
....He was strolling through the town with Amelia, when he felt a sudden chill. Glancing around he could feel many pairs of eyes staring at him, penetrating him, regarding him as a freak. Undaunted, Zelgadis hid his facial features underneath his cloak, before continuing on his way. Some time later, a largish group of people confronted him about his appearance. Angered by their disapproval, Zelgadis drew his sword. But despite his swordsmanship, his magic and his rock skin he stood no chance against the mob. They swarmed over him and Zel didn’t really stand a chance. They then cast his broken body into a darkened alley where Amelia found him.....
Directly beneath him, Amelia was fast asleep, snuggled in her bed. Amelia, his beloved. She didn’t care about his appearance, she only cared for his personality. Zel paused as he recalled the times when she encouraged him, when she stood by him, when she saw past his freakish appearance.
But this reminiscing did nothing to comfort Zel. The events that took place earlier confirmed that Zel is only going to looked upon as a monster. The point is clear: Zelgadis must have his old body back. At any cost. And he must do it alone - Who knows how far Zel will have to travel before he succeeds? Who knows how many life-threatening dangers he’d have to face? Who knows how many horrific monstrosities will he have to face? One things for certain: he can’t endanger the lives of his friends.
Or Amelia.
His mind made up, Zel descended from the roof into the room below. Amelia was still sleeping. Her facial expression of bliss and peace made Zel’s heart break. Trembling, Zelgadis softly took her hand... And leaned forward. His lips pressed against the soft flesh of her fingers.
"I love you" he whispered.
So, if you see my angel of light
With her sweet wine
Could you let me know
Because I think she’s gone again
Downstairs, two friends were coming to the end of their enormous meal. Gourry’s exhaustion got the better of him and he lay, face down and out cold, in the remnants of his meal. Gourry’s friend, Lina Inverse, picked out what was still edible on the his plate. He won’t be needing them now....
Just then Lina’s attention was driven from her stomach to someone who’d just entered the room. It was Zelgadis.
"Hiya Zel!" grinned Lina
"Lina" said Zel
Lina got out of her seat and strode towards her friend, chicken wing in hand.
"How are you feeling?" Lina inquired.
"I’m.... fine...."
And with that Zel headed for the door.
"Hey! Where ya going?" asked Lina.
Zel stopped.
"This town can’t accept me for who I am. Nor the next town or the one after that. Therefore I am leaving to find a cure for my body."
"WHAT?" said Lina in a sudden burst of exasperation. She heard this story all before but it wasn’t like Zel to leave his friends. "You’re leaving? You’re leaving the few people in this world who accept you for who you are? When will you stop being so depressed and realise that we will stand by you no matter what?!"
Zel bowed his head.
"I understand that. But I intend to travel all over the world to find an answer. I cannot endanger the lives of you, Gourry and Amelia."
Lina paused before asking: "What shall I say to Amelia?"
"That I love her"
And with that Zel opened the door and stepped into the night.
Fatal are these moments of trust
That please us and who would know
Helped here by the passions of life
Now strife won’t let me go
When the morning came, Zel was long gone. The warm sun beamed down through Amelia’s window. With the rays of light dancing on her face, Amelia woke up from her sleep. She yawned, stretched and peered out the window. She marvelled at the glorious sunrise and the watched as the townsfolk went about their morning duties. It was the most perfect morning - A time to be happy.
Lina was eating her breakfast next to the still recumbent Gourry. Suddenly Amelia burst in with the most cheerful of all smiles. Lina felt cold. How can I break the news to Amelia when she is this cheerful? She wondered.
"Good morning Miss Lina!" grinned Amelia, taking her seat opposite Lina.
"Morning." Said a less enthusiastic Lina.
Sensing danger, Amelia stopped dead in her tracks: "Is something wrong Miss Lina?’
Lina nodded.
"Well, what is it?" said Amelia, who was tingling with excitement at the thought of an opportunity to help those around her as a champion of justice. Then she paused.
"Hey, Where’s Zelgadis?"
Lina cleared her throat.
"Um, Amelia, there s something you should know..." began Lina, her voice rich in hesitation.
Seconds later, a terrible wail resounded throughout the tavern.
So if you see my angel of light
With her sweet wine
I think she needs to know
That I’ve gone again
I’ve really gone again
I think I’m gone again
Amelia slammed shut the door to her room. She fell on her knees, crestfallen. Her eyes crying a river of tears. Tears that steamed down her face - a face wearing an expression of heartbreak.
"..Why did he leave...?" she whispered as she sobbed.
"..Can either of us go on without the other? I understood what he wanted to do but he was so single-minded. Couldn’t he tell I loved him with all my heart and that I won’t leave him no matter how bad things went? I saw him for his good nature. Why didn’t he see me in the same why? Why wouldn’t he open up to me?..."
Amelia buried her face in her hands. The hands that were soaked with her tears. Then she looked upwards and gazed out the window.
"... I need to be strong for Zelgadis’ sake..." She whispered. "But I can’t do it alone..."
I’m so lonely
Some distance out of town, Zelgadis made his way through a forest. He stopped and leant against a tree. He was alone with his thoughts.
I am alone, he thought. As before and as I will be.
He closed his eyes and stared downwards.
I must find the means to return my body to its former state. And Yet....
He sighed. He opened his eyes and stared skywards. He whispered:
"..Amelia. I’m....."
He stopped mid-sentence. Shaking his head, he turned away and headed off.
The End
