Manager's note: You're welcome, Dani, and you know I love your fics! They're great!
The afternoon sun glitter’s brightly in my view as the rhythmic sound of the horses hooves trot against the dirt road, putting me in a relax state. I let myself sink into the soft straw filled cart, closing me eye’s and thinking of her. It has been nearly seven year’s since we last saw each other, much less spoken to each other. I fiddle with the small bracelet in my pocket. I still remember when she giggled and tossed me her wrist amulet, telling me not to forget her. I smiled and nodded, as she waved and caught up with Lina and Gourry. Heading back to her kingdom in Saillune. I haven’t been able to fully stop thinking of her since that day we parted and went our separate way’s. The realization that she was becoming precious to me was frightening, yet it had been so exciting. Seven long, lonely year’s. I’m now 25 year’s old, Still shy and perhaps still cold on the outside. Lina, who I had seen in the past month, said I was pretty much the same. I’m not sure if that was a compliment or not, but I suppose it doesn’t matter. Her and Gourry seemed to have been an item.
I’m still not human. I have dedicated most of my life and soul for finding the cure for my chimera body. To no avail. I suppose that is what drew me to her, that she looked past the fact that I was a monster. A demon. I feel my hand clench around the bracelet, gritting my teeth. A monster...that is what I am. My name is Zelgadis Grayword’s. Once puppet to Rezo, now just a monster. I have felt my very soul being engulfed in darkness, and when I had found out that Amelia felt for me...romantically, about... ‘me’... I began feeling light headed and unexpectedly warm. I didn’t think it was possible for people to care for me. Not like that. Perhaps...just perhaps, she could bring the light I needed inside of me to drive away the darkness.
“Oi, lad, is this your stop?”
My thought’s we’re interrupted by the man that owned the cart and horse. I sat up looked at the setting’s around me. Surely enough, the Saillune kingdom gate’s were before my eye’s. I began feeling nervousness creep down my spine making me gulp. I can’t turn back now, But what if her feeling’s have changed--- No, I had come this far, and I wasn’t about to turn around and walk away.
“Yes, thank you...”
“No problem, take care kid!”
I hopped off of the cart and brushed the straw from my shoulder’s and back side. I stare at the large crowd’s and shop’s around me. I begin feeling tense.
“Just tell her how you feel, boy...”
I look over my shoulder as the man snap’s the rein’s, his horse begins to trot past me. A ghost of a smile trickles upon my lip’s.
“I’ll do that, thanks.”
The man raised his hand and simply waved. I wasn’t that obvious, was I? I shrugged my shoulder’s and turned my attention’s back to the entrance of Saillune. I sigh as I stuffed my hand’s into my pocket’s. My hand coming in contact with Amelia’s wrist band. I turn it over in my hand, caressing it with my finger’s as I’ve done so many other time’s, bringing comfort to me when I’ve needed it the most. A light wind pick’s up and tosses strand’s of lavender hair whipping around my face. With the breeze was the familiar scent of spring flower’s in bloom. The smell brought me back to the past...
“Zelgadis~San, Zelgadis~Saaaaaan!”
I heard Amelia’s voice chime as she wailed her hand in the air, running to me. I turn around to face her, as she pant’s. I blink into her startling blue eye’s.
“What is it?”
“You didn’t even say good-bye!” Amelia pouted slapping her hand’s on her hip’s. I blink and turn away from her and begin walking again.
“Good-bye, Amelia...” I hear Amelia gasp, as her hand slap’s against my shoulder, spinning me around.
“That’s not fair! Besides I need to ask you something.”
“Well, what is it?”
“Well, no doubt your going to be searching for your cure right away, so I was wondering if you would....well...If you’d like to come back to Saillune with me, we could find the location of your--”
I rose my hand and shut my eye’s.
“Thanks, but no thanks...I have other plan’s.”
“Oh, OK...well then...”
“Is that all?” I asked annoyed, turning around, looking over my shoulder at her. She simply nodded, looking at her feet.
“Well then, bye.”
I swished my cape behind me and began walking away from her once again.
“Zelgadis~San!” Amelia cried again, I sighed loudly and rolled my eye’s, turning around as I felt Amelia slam into my body, embracing her arm’s around my waist. I blinked a few time’s before regaining my thought’s. I stood there, still and rigid. Not knowing what to think of the whole ordeal. I listened to Amelia’s deep breathing against my chest. I put my hand’s on her shoulder’s. She quickly backed away, blushing madly, and looking at the ground. She seemed to be about to burst into tear’s. I blinked at her feeling my own cheek’s flush with warmth and color.
“Don’t forget about me, Zelgadis~San.”
I opened my mouth to respond, but instead Amelia slid off her bracelet and tossed it, I caught, and examined it. I shifted my eye’s back to her.
“C’mon Amelia!" Lina called from away.
Amelia turned around, and then turned back to me. She giggled and began to run off, waving.
“Good-bye Zelgadis~San!”
“...Bye...” I responded softly, turning around and continuing to walk . I blinked at the bracelet.
I snapped myself back tot he present as I walked towards the huge kingdom. Two guard’s stopped me as I walked to the entrance of Amelia’s home.
“I’m here to see Princess Amelia.”
“The highness is...”
“What’s wrong Sabbastian, does this man have business with me?”
I blinked at the familiar, yet unfamiliar voice that came from behind me. Could it be...? I turned around to face a much taller, *Ahem.* Shapely Amelia. Dressed in long white, maiden robes. Her hair was long and a perfect shade of midnight, hinted with violet. I blinked against her dazzling blue eye’s. Yes, that was her. her eye’s were still big and innocent. A deep shade of sapphire. The breeze picked up again, as Amelia brushed her long locks of raven tresses from her eye’s, blinking at me. I was in utter awe at how she turned out.
“Amelia...long time no see.” I finally managed to stutter out.
“I’m sorry I don’t think I...by the goddess, ZELGADIS!?”
I felt Amelia’s slender arm’s wrap around me neck and embrace me. My mind blurred, feeling her warmth and light seep into my body. Yes...this is how it was supposed to be. Just like this.
“How have you been?!”
She chuckled pulling back into our embrace. I let my own arm’s cradle her, in a too long awaited hold.
“Good...” I said softly, out of it, taking in the scent of her hair.
“And you?”
“I’m great! I’ve been busy....God’s, it has been...at least 6 year’s!”
“Seven...”
“Wow...that’s long.”
“Too long.”
Gathering my strength, I tangle my finger’s in her long hair, kissing the top of her head softly. Amelia back’s up and smile’s at me, I feel my heart beat skip like I had just ran from Sairaag to Saillune. I blink shyly into her eye’s, sending her a piercing gaze.
“I can’t believe your here.”
“Neither can I...Amelia?”
“Yes?” She chuckled blinking up to me.
“ I need to tell you something...”
“Well go ahead, what is it?”
I shut my eye’s finding all of my courage to find a way to tell her.
“Mommy, mommy!”
I batted my eye’s at the young girl that looked to be around the age of 4, running up to Amelia and clinging on to her leg. She looked incredibly like Amelia, except her eye’s were green. I look up at Amelia, who is laughing and gathering the child in her arm’s.
“Chastity, meet Zelgadis, my old friend.”
“ A pleasure to meet you, Mr. Zelgadis.” The young girl giggled and curled a lock of her mother’s hair around her small finger’s. It hit me hard. She...has children? A man suddenly dragged by another child that was a little older, ran next to Amelia. The man chuckled and kissed Amelia on the cheek.
“Sorry about that honey, I didn’t know we had guest’s.”
The man blinked at me with a grin. I tuned back to Amelia with a confused look. Amelia blinked, and looked into my eye’s with an almost guilty look.
“Daelynn, this is a close friend, Zelgadis, Zelgadis, this...is my husband, Daelynn.” “A pleasure, any friend of Amelia is a friend of mine.”
He offered his hand, I reached out reluctantly and shook it. Her husband. I felt a terribly painful gnawing in my belly. Oh god’s...I’m too late.
“Darling, could you take the children while Zelgadis and I catch up?”
“No problem, nice meeting you again, Zelgadis!”
I nodded and blinked down as the older child tugged at my tunic. I bent down and smiled at her. She blushed and giggled, running behind her father, who bundled her up and walked away. I stood back up and faced Amelia, who was smiling as her husband and children walked from view.
“Married and children, eh?”
“Mmmm...Yes”
I stood silent for a few moment’s, feeling my eye’s burning. I took deep breath’s. The gnawing continued, painfully. Feeling the darkness return in my body.
“Zelgadis?”
I looked back at Amelia.
“You were going to tell me something?”
I couldn’t tell her now...not now, she’s happy. This is my fault, How could I ever fall into this. This is my fault, I waited too long.
“It’s nothing...I just...”
I rustled in my pocket’s and gritting my teeth at how my heart ached. My hands caressed over her bracelet. I pulled it out and held it in front of her face. her eye’s began to grow sad.
“I just wanted to let you know I haven’t forgotten you, and I believe this belongs to you.”
“ I...I mean....Thank you.”
I placed the amulet in her open hand and flashed her a small smile that I was obviously faking. I looked away, afraid that tear’s were welding in my eye’s.
“Well, I should be off...”
“Oh, wont you stay for awhile, dinner perhaps?”
“ I really can’t, I have...plan’s.”
Amelia nodded, walking towards me and pressing her lip’s against my cheek, I felt my salty tear’s sting my eye’s and spill over my cheek’s.
“I’m sorr-” She began. I brushed passed her and briskly walked from her, into the sunset, away from Saillune.
“Zelgadis~San!”
I heard her call...I continued to walk, freely letting the tear’s spill from eye’s, I gasped and choked out her name as I rushed past the people. Away from eye’s, Away from Saillune....Away from her... I broke out running, running through the entrance I had giving everything up to walk through. The blazing orange sunset blinded me as I ran through the dense forest, feeling my throat grow sore, I stopped, falling to my knees and holding my head in my hand’s. Tear’s slipped over my cheek’s like a waterfall, it had been so long since I had last cried. it wasn’t supposed to happen like this....without her...it will take over...the darkness. Amelia...I whisper over and over. Asking why, why did she do this? Why was I foolish enough to believe she cared? Why...? I am a FOOL! I punch my fist against the hard soil, sobbing like a child...I need her like green thing’s need water...don’t let this happen...I...I...I...I feel inside the light in my body disappear...she’s happy. That’s what matter’s. She’s happy...without me. I can survive knowing she’s happy, and that she did care... I’ll be OK. I tell myself. I can survive knowing she taught me to love. I raise to me feet and lean against a tree, looking back at Saillune.
“I love you...Amelia...” I whisper. Tear’s continue to trickle down my face. I begin walking where I had come from earlier, away from her....Away from Amelia. I wish her happiness. And I know she wishes the same for me. I’m afraid the darkness will win, but I won’t give up without a fight. I brush the tear’s from my cheek’s. I will move on...but I will never forget...and never regret...what could have been....
