Sinclair History

My Hardware

Sinclair ZX81

My first computer ! No colour, no sound, no graphics, only 1 kb of memory, a membrane keyboard. But, it was affordable. Mine was bought as a kit in December 1981, and assembled by my dad. It is still in working condition (but I'm not sure the tapes still load).

Sinclair ZX81 16 kb RAM pack

This thing increased your RAM by a factor 16, but the contacts were a bit loose. If you hit the table, the ZX81 would reset itself.

Sinclair ZX Spectrum 48k

Successor to the ZX81. It had colour, sound, graphics, and either 16 or 48k of RAM. One of the most succesful machines of the 80's. Features the famous 'dead fish' rubber keyboard. It was cheaper than the Commodore 64, but the C64 had far better sound, a better keyboard and did not require a joystick interface.

Sinclair ZX Spectrum +

This is a redesigned Spectrum 48k with a 'real' keyboard, which makes the Spectrum look more like a QL.

Currah speech unit

Allows the Speccie to speak. It's a module that plugs into the expansion port. Comes with software on cassette.
