ANIME

I have only seen several episodes of the anime, though I must say they are very similar. The anime follows the manga very closely, probably because not many writers can reproduce that Takahashi brand of humour half as well as the real person can. Which is a wise choice; it would have been totally unfunny if anyone else tried to add their own episodes in. There were a little changes made to the humour and some stories were combined, but that's all the changes there were.

Urusei Yatsura, having been branded as the most popular anime on TV ever, is not easy to get a hold of nowadays because it is considered quite old. It premiered in the early 80's anyway. The animation quality is not as good as Ranma 1/2 (another of Takahashi's mangas), but I personally find Urusei Yatsura way more hilarious than Ranma 1/2. You have to hear Furukawa Toshio do the voice of the lecherous Ataru; no one can do it like him.

Since it was such a success, Urusei Yatsura had spawned 6 movies and about 12 OAVs. I haven't seen any of the movies, but people who have give it as many thumbs as they can manage. Go here for a more comphrehensive look at the movies.

Only Yuu - First movie, about how Ataru finds himself engaged to someone he doesn't even remember. It was actually the result of winning a game similar to the tag game Ataru played with Lum when they first met. Very soon, he is zapped off to the planet to meet his future bride. Total madness after that, but it ends with Ataru running away from Lum at the alter. Typical.
Beautiful Dreamer - A spell by a "dream monster" causes the entire cast to be sucked into a dream, where there is no school, food never runs out and everyday is a bludge. The person afflicted, Ataru, eventually decides it was not the reality he wanted, and so trashed the whole thing by waking everyone up from sleeping. An extremely entertaining movie.
