Name Description

Yuusuke Urameshi
Our 14-year old main character and legendary street fighter, this juvenile delinquent is one of Reikai's psychic detectives. He is rude, violent and not very bright, but he still manages to fit a bit of charisma in. His intelligence seems to elevate in a fight, where he often uses his intellect to win, and he always wins. He also has a special trademark ability, using the Reigan, which is firing energy from his finger like a shotgun. A surprising change occurs in Yuusuke's later life, when he dies again; but this time he resurrects automatically, but as a demon. It happens that the gene from his demon ancestor of centuries ago, suddenly showed itself up and turned him into a demon. Despite the change he is still the same old person, though.

Youko Kurama (Minamino Shuichi)
Kurama is a bishounen, which would be gross in real life but these sort of characters are often very popular in Manga and Anime. They are stereotypically quiet, studious, extremely intelligent and polite, which is exactly what Kurama is. Kurama is actually a 1,000 year-old Youko, a fox demon who terrorized Makai as the leader of a gang of robbers back then. 15 years ago he was pursued and heavily injured by a Reikai detective, and travelling to Ningenkai as a soul, he took over the body of an unborn baby and was reborn in a human body. Known as Minamino Shuichi in Ningenkai, he leads a normal life and loves his human mother dearly for raising him. Kurama was given the power to transform back to his Youko self during a fighting tournament.

Hiei
Hiei is a male Kourime- what I mean is that he was born out of wedlock of a Kourime who has associated with other demons or humans. Kourime will give birth to another Kourime once in her life, and are all meant to be girls; if a male Kourime is born, they are a threat to the Kourime and their kingdom as male Kourimes has the power of fire. They are thrown down from Hyouga (the Kourime kingdom) into the forests of Makai, and this was how Hiei became a robber. Hiei had originally tried to take over Reikai, Ningenkai and Makai all in one go, but he was stopped and defeated by Yuusuke on his first assignment. He was then sentenced by Reikai to help Yuusuke in his other assignments, but he only started to remotely care about Yuusuke near the end of the Manga. Cold, cruel and uncaring in nature, Hiei also has a Jagan, a third eye which can be used for a variety of things.
Hiei: You're a busybody.

Kazuma Kuwabara
The least popular out of the 4 and possibly the ugliest, his only goal in life is to defeat Yuusuke in fighting. Ofcourse he never got the chance, but he ends up fighting alongside Yuusuke and helping him in his assignments in a very gung-ho way. He gets along quite well with Kurama, challenges Yuusuke at every opportunity and hates Hiei's guts, but he still fell in love with Hiei's twin sister, Yukina (he never found out that she was Hiei's sister). He works by hunches, and has psychic talents and good instincts, but it still made him the weakest out of the four. He uses a weapon, the Reiken which is energy turned into the shape of a sword and can be called up at will.
Kuwabara: You people! Do you know who I am??

Koenma
The person-in-charge of Reikai, he is the one who conducts Yuusuke's operations and gives out orders. His body is in the shape of a child, but when he goes to Ningenkai he can turn into a spunky-looking guy. Koenma doesn't know any martial arts, and so is actually the first to run away at the sight of trouble which might involve him.
Koenma: Kuwabara's strong/powerful!

Botan
One of the denizens from Reikai, she transports souls to and from Reikai. She accompanied Yuusuke when he was a ghost, and when he was reincarnated she assumed an identity in Ningenkai and acted as Yuusuke's secretary and assistant. She doesn't do much though, her abilities being healing and running errands.
Botan: Look at the guys who attacked you, everyone.

Genkai
The teacher of Yuusuke, this old woman gave all her power to Yuusuke when she died in a fight with Doguro in the demonic tournament. She is fairly strict with Yuusuke in his training, and he regards her with hardly little respect, but he was more pleased than anything when Koenma resurrected her as Yuusuke's prize for winning the tournament. Now I know the picture on the left isn't exactly of the old woman I mentioned above, but it is a picture of what she is capable of doing to her physical appearance. When she uses her energy to it's fullest, her body cells will revive and her body will suddenly return to it's youthful state. I suppose we all want to know how it is done.
Genkai: For the time being, practice here (at her temple).

Keiko Yukimura
Yuusuke's long-time friend and "girlfriend", she has the amazing ability of being able to floor Yuusuke with one blow of fist on the head. Another punch and he'll be unconscious. Unlike Yuusuke, she is a clever and hard-working student at their high school, and head of the student's council. Her connection to Yuusuke had gotten her into trouble before, but she seems to accept it.
Keiko: Teacher! Something's wrong! There are a whole lot of weird people outside---Teacher!

Yukina
The sweet and gentle twin of Hiei, she like all Kourime has the ability to cry tears which turn into pearls. Kazuma falls in love with her when she was rescued with Yuusuke, and she has helped them with her healing powers in the demonic tournament. Yukina is also looking for her brother whom she doesn't know is Hiei, yet he knows but does not reveal his identity to her.

Shizuru Kuwabara Shizuru Kuwabara
Kazuma's psychic sister, she often smokes a cigarette while drinking alcohol, and is rarely surprised by anything. The invincible Shizura is feared by all, including the demons at the demonic tournament; she earned quite a reputation there. Kazuma is terrified of his sister, because she bashes him up as well whenever he does something wrong.

Maya Kitajima Maya Kitajima
I felt compelled to mention Kitajima. She is actually not a character in the Anime, but only appears briefly in a side story in the Manga. Why would I include her? Well, I have noticed that on nearly every Yu Yu Hakusho site, there is a picture of Kurama (and Hiei) and an caption which says that the reason why [insert name here] loves Yu Yu Hakusho is because of Kurama and Hiei. Everyone manages to get a female counterpart in the end (even Hiei), except Kurama. Well, probably unknown to some people, Kitajima is actually Kurama's "girlfriend". A girl from Kurama's Junior High which has a big interest in the supernatural, her psychic capabilites got her into trouble when she saw a demon with a grudge against Kurama. The story was about how Kurama met Hiei; Kurama saved Hiei from bleeding to death, and in turn they helped each other tear the monster who kidnapped Kitajima from limb to limb. We don't hear of Kitajima anymore from then on, but I do know Kurama does care about Kitajima to an extent. Jealous?
