Joi was featured in Singapore Polytechnic Alumni Network News in the May 2002 Issue 10.

Joi is an alumni of Singapore Polytehnic and graduated from the Optometry course at the School of Chemical & Life Sciences. During her 2nd year when she was 18, Joi took part in a singing competition for teriary students. Having a great voice and outstanding stage presence, Joi got into the finals, which also opened doors for her singing career.

In 1996, Joi joined the "Extraordinary Singers Course" at Ocean Butterflies. She was talent spotted by Ocean Butteflies and was offered a singing contract.

According to the article, Joi does not like to sing at karaokes. She strongly recommends music lovers to visit The Ark Lounge [Muchuan] where she used to perform with her brother [Cai Li Zhang]

2002, Joi prepares for her second album. She is also putting her creativity to work by composing her own songs. Joi and Cai Li Zhang also performed at NTU Nanyang Auditorium during the Music Express VIII on 8 Feb 2002. She sang one of her self-composed songs on that day.
