Jim Baker and Phil Aslett are both in their early twenties and already have built up a phenomenal discography. Their innovative work has appeared on several of the scene's finest labels, including Odysee, Metalheads, Good Looking and naturally their very own label Source Direct, which they started in January 1995. Most of their earlier work was presented under pseudonyms such as Sounds Of Life for Certificate 18, X-Files for Basement and Oblivion for StreetBeats. And perhaps confusing but definitely more interesting, Source Direct's music doesn't come in any one pre-formatted style or category. From the breezy "Bukem-type" dreamscapes to the most chilling astro-jazz, Source Direct have produced it all. Jim and Phil may have started out as the pupils of their fellow-bad-boy-gone-good and (one-time) neighbour Photek but with tracks like Currents, Snake Style, The Crane and Red Lights they are in a class of their own. And perhaps they will soon find their way from the breakbeat underground to mass audiences what with their contributions to the Mo'Wax compilation Headz II and their planned album releases! Just try and keep up with these boys... Here are the Q's; here are the A's. Where & when were you born? "Jim was born in St. Albans, Herts 15 February 1976 and Phil was born in Farnbrough, Kent 11 July 1976." What was the first record you produced? And what's your favourite one? "The first record we made was Sounds Of Life Vol. 1 on Certificate 18. Previous to that were other tracks recorded but never released. The Crane is our favourite track to date." How did you get started in music? "We began to get involved in music when we were just twelve & thirteen, listening to breakbeats and hiphop on our walkmans." There was a time when we didn't yet use the term 'jungle'; looking back now, what was the most influential record in its development? "A Guy Called Gerald's Anyhting Can Happen, that changed a lot of things for us." Why did you start up your own label? "We set up Source Direct so that we could release our own tracks and remain in full control." Which track would you really like to remix? "We've got a project planned with Photek and as a remix we'd like to remix Anything Can Happen by A Guy Called Gerald." How did you hook up with the Metalheads Kru? "Metalheads asked us for a twelve inch, so after some time thinking about it and speaking to Goldie we decided to run the 12"." What's your favourite production tool and why? "The sampler. It twists things up hard." Under which pseudonyms have you released tracks? (besides Source Direct, Sounds Of Life, Oblivion and X-Files) "Source Direct .......... ha! ha! (Wouldn't you like to know.)" Do you DJ? "We've been mixing on & off for about five years. We've got plans to promote more club nights and one-off's, plus do several PA's around the globe with a big visual aspect in the show." Which clubs do you rate? "The Marlborough Club in Cottonmill, Herts and The Blue Note in Hoxton Square, London." Why are there still many people who do not understand this form of music? "People don't like change. This music is new and it'll take a little time for people to accept it into their homes and feel comfortable with its presence both on radio and TV." What is your all-time top-five in music? "1. Snake Style - Source Direct, 2. Hidden Camera (Static Mix) - Photek, 3. The Crane - Source Direct, 4. Terminator - Goldie, 5. Here Come The Drums - Doc Scott." Who are your favourite producers? "They all know who they are!! (Photek, Goldie, Doc Scott)" Finally, tell us something surprising about yourselves. "We used to run a series of illegal raves under the age of consent." That's all folks. Don't forget to check Jim and Phil's impressive list of record releases by clicking the button below...
