Ever since the end of the first Sazan Eyes OAV, fans have been clamoring for more of the adventures of Yakumo and Pai. The sequel has finally come out, and it is a worthy follow up to the first.
The story picks up with the problem Yakumo faced at the end of the first OAV: where is Pai? He finally finds her at a shopping center in Tokyo.
It seems that after the climatic battle between Pai and Benaros at the end of the first miniseries, Pai has lost her memory. But she is now living a peaceful, sheltered life with a family that has adopted her. She has friends and leads a happy, school girl life.
This makes for an interesting turn of events: In the first miniseries, the plot revolved around our heroes wanting to make Pai a human. But when Yakumo finds Pai, the quest turns to getting Pai's memories back, thus, turning her back into a Sanjiyan.
Pai doesn't like the idea of there being another side to her, a side where there is a danger filled and turmoilous world. From the point where Yakumo finds her, every demon they encounter encourages her to go back to living her peaceful, school girl life. They tell her discovering the truth will hurt her friends and other bad things will happen. But her own friends convince her that the truth about who she was and where she comes from, no matter how terrible it may be, is better then living a lie.
The animation is top notch, the action is riveting and non-stop, and the monsters and villians,(especially Benaros)are all really cool, all of which I have come to expect from this anime. The only complaint I have is in the ending, which I find a little vague and abrupt. Never the less, Yuzo Takada's work is a very moving anime, I hope to see more of this story again soon.
***1/2 stars
The anime is based off of the manga of Yuzo Takada, and has been running in Japan for a long time. There isn't much translated into english so far, but what little has been published here is an excellent read!
