Aidan's Battle Angel

How do you imagine the world in another 10 years? 20? 30? Would it be a perfect utopia? Or would it be a shadowy ghost of metal and darkness? Such is the setting of Yukito Kishiro's dramatic sci-fi action anime, Battle Angel. Originally published in a weekly magazine aimed at adults, Gunnm (Gahn-mu), or "Gun Dream" told the story of a young female cyborg in a world of chaos and steel thru manga. Eventually brought to the United States, it was republished as an English translated manga under the name "Battle Angel Alita." Later released as two OAVs in 1993 (Rusty Angel and Tears Sign), the story was once again renamed as "Battle Angel" (the main character, Alita's name had been changed to Gally, so it wouldn't make much sense to keep the "Alita" in there).

So, as you wander around my hopeless tangle of Battle Angel pages, please be informed that Battle Angel itself is an amazing anime, and I'm thoroughly retarded when it comes to serious description and detail. Battle Angel is a lot like Ghost in the Shell in portraying a scary but not impossible future. Young cyborg is reincarnated by genius scientist, cyborg yearns to kill, cyborg learns about the underside of human nature while learning of the good side at the same time. So, enjoy yourself and keep in mind that the story is being told thru the eyes of a dolt (namely.. me!); which means that it may or may not be reliable.. depends on how much caffeine was coursing thru my veins when each section was completed ^_^;;

Enter.. The Players

Ido

Ido is the super-genius cyberknetics doctor who "resurrected" Gally. He mainly helps robots and humans with robotic parts by correcting any problems they may have, and he moonlights as a hunter-warrior. Ido is also a former citizen of Zolom, and was widely known as their best cyberknetics doctor.

Quote: "I didn't give you limbs to do things like this! You don't have to work, all you have to do is to be.. to be beautiful."

Gally

Gally is our heroine, a small but powerful female cyborg who was put back together by Ido. Gally herself can't remember anything from her previous life, but one thing is certain, she's trained to kill. Gally enlists herself as a hunter-warrior once she discovers the thrill in killing.

Quote: "Do you think I'm some kind of doll for you to play with!?"

Chiren

Chiren is Ido's former cyberknetics partner from Zolom who somehow manages to fall down to Scrap-Iron City. She's angry with Ido for giving up his "honor" to come work in the slums, and she's jealous of Gally, who Ido cares for greatly. Chiren is desperate to get back to Zolom and will do anything from fixing up gladiators and spine-thieves for the factory, to sleeping around with powerful players in the City.

Quote: "Nothing I do seems to have any affect at all! I'm garbage! Your's and Zolom's cast-off scrap!"

Vector

Vector is perhaps the one who is most responsible for everything horrible that happens in Scrap-Iron City. As the head of the factory, he plays on people's impossible dreams to exploit their work. He runs the gladiators and is the one who sends out the number of organs needed for the spine thieves to retrieve. He also attempts to pull Gally into the gladiator ring by putting Yugo's life in danger.

Quote: "I think it's finally time for you to go to Zolom."

Yugo

Yugo is a kid who does odd jobs around Scrap-Iron City in order to fulfill his life-long dream ~ to earn enough money to go to Zolom. He also happens to be the object of Gally's affection. But, unbeknownst to Gally, Yugo's odd jobs also include the profession of spine-thief, and time begins to work against him once Vector gets his claws into Yugo's dreams.

Quote: "Uh.. you're scaring me.."

Does it amuse you to play 'Fallen Angel' to these insects?

Our story begins with Ido rummaging thru the scrapyard, looking for robotic parts. In the process, he finds a fully intact female bust, with functioning spine and brain. He takes it back to his workshop and works on the bust until finally an entire cyborg body has been created and the brain brought back online. Ido asks the cyborg her name, but she can't remember anything about her previous identity or life, and is finally named "Gally." Shortly later the doctor's handyman, Yugo, walks into the workroom, letting Ido know that he's done for the day, but he doesn't leave without catching the attention of a certain young female. As the doctor attempts to bring Gally up to date on the world, he lets her know about the spine thieves, who are involved in the black market trade of spines and brains. Apparently human spines and brains are the only things that cannot be replicated by machines, and are highly valuable. But in order to get these spines, a person is usually slit thru the back and their spine is manually wrenched out of their body, usually while they're still living

As Ido goes out one evening he meets up with his former cyberknetics partner from Zolom, Chiren. Chiren tries to convince Ido to move back to Zolom, but Ido flatly refuses. Later in the evening, as a young girl is being assaulted by brain thieves, Ido appears from the shadows and begins to fight the thieves while the girl runs far, far away. Gally, however is curious to see where Ido goes every night, and has managed to follow him. When she hears his screams of pain she leaps into the fray and suddenly begins to attack the two thieves, both being much larger than she is. She draws on power even she didn't know she had to kill one, and send the other flying off the ally into a ravine. Heading back home, Ido explains to Gally that he has enrolled himself into the group of hunter-warriors throughout Scrap-Iron City that are devoted to keeping the peace. The police that had formerly kept order had been replaced by hunter-warriors, who worked as bounty hunters for the factory, which put out lists of wanted criminals every few hours. Gally decides that the adrenaline rush she gets from killing is worth living for, and enlists herself as a hunter-warrior, much to Ido's dismay. This of course, leads Gally to further her fighting capabilities and generally whoop ass against almost every spine thief she comes across. In the process of fighting, Gally gets stronger and stronger, and is equally coveted by the manager of the factory who wants her as a gladiator and by the deranged Chiren, who's going out of her mind with anger at Ido. Eventually, Gally must face battling enhanced gladiators.

Gally: "So what is Zolom really like?"
Robot: "The official answer to that is 'no comment.'"

Such eloquent pain belongs on a more suitful stage ~ one of broken steel and iron

As human beings and andriods, we're all subject to our own ambitions. Yugo's is to go to Zolom. Gally's is to have Yugo love her. Vector's is to have Gally in the gladiators ring. And so, the cycle begins.

Yugo's in the spine-thieving business; it's a fast and fairly easy way to get cash quick. Once he's earned enough, he's paying it to Vector and he's LEAVING.. fast. Vector's happy to take the money of course, he needs the parts and he could use the cash for his lavish life-style. And since Gally has definitely got a thang for Yugo, and when he realizes it, he discovers he shares her sentiment. This is also around the time Vector figures it out too. And as we all know, love can always be manipulated to harm others. So, Vector plots to hold precious Yugo's life in his hands in order to get Gally into the gladiator ring. Which would work pretty well if he did it himself, but all powerful men need to use their not-so-loyal lackies sometime or another.

...Enter Chiren. She basically does nothing until she needs to. Yugo's out killing more and more people for spines in order to raise enough money (Vector has promised him a trip to Zolom if he can collect the right amount of chips). Unfortunately, while leading innocent robots to get a lube job, he gets caught by a hunter-warrior (a durned ugly one too). Yugo himself gets away, but not before the hunter-warrior kills his friend and gets a good look at Yugo's face. So now, Yugo is one of our criminals on the run. Gally, being a hunter-warrior, pays attention to the daily listings every day.. and happens to find Yugo's name flash brightly one evening. So, she sets out to find him. Being emotionally attached to him, she doesn't kill him. Instead they have a nice long heart to heart, which involves a story about how Yugo wants to go to Zolom because that's what his brother always wanted.. until he built an illegal aircraft and was killed brutally in front of Yugo and his (the brother's) wife by a hunter-warrior. Chiren, meanwhile has followed the two to Yugo's current hide-out. And although everything is altogether peaceful, it can't last long. Enter ugly hunter-warrior after Yugo. The hunter-warrior himself is set on killing Yugo just like he killed Yugo's older brother. Gally's not about ready to let Yugo die though, so she defends him valiantly. This particularly hunter-warrior has a grudge against Gally too. Seems Gally's just too darned efficient for him, so he'll have to "accidentally" kill her as well. He's not particularly good at it.. but he does manage to mortally wound Yugo before Gally picks him off. Gally isn't sure what to do in order to save Yugo, but she sure isn't ready to let go. Chiren manages to help Gally re-route some of her life-support system to Yugo in order to keep him alive. His body's a mess but his brain and spine are intact. So she takes him to Ido, who helps put Yugo back together, this time with a cyborg body. You'd think it'd end here and everyone'd be happy, right? WRONG! Yugo's still set on getting to Zolom. So he sneaks out of the recovery room one day and begins climbing one of the many huge chutes coming down from Zolom to Scrap-Iron City (these chutes transport waste to SI City and materials to Zolom). These are, however, rigged to keep trash from Scrap Iron City away. Huge rings with spikes swirl down the chutes periodically in order to kill whatever's hanging from it. Unfortunately, Yugo's in its way. His lower body is totally shredded, but the rest of him's just fine. As he goes flying thru the air Gally manages to grab onto him and stick to the chute using a dagger lodged into it as a handhold. Yugo can't seem to keep his grip tho, and after whispering a few last words of love to Gally, he goes tumbling tumbling down to the earth.
