1917 - The Chung Ling High School was first established as a primary school to educate boys of Chinese immigrants to Malaya. The school was supported financially by the Chinese community. 1920s - The school began to attract students from the northern half of the Malay Peninsula where such education was unavailable. 1930s - Under Mr. David Chen, there was a rapid increase in enrolment. Mr. Chen initiateda policy of bilingual education. Students coming from as far as Indonesia, Thailand,Burma, Singapore and the Federated Malay States under British rule began attending Chung Ling. 1941-1945 During the Japanese occupation of the island of Penang, Malaya, the Chung Ling High School lost one tenth of its teaching staff and student body. Eleven teachers and over one hundred students perished through imprisonment and tortured by the occupation forces. The school was completely gutted. 1945-1952 Following the war, expansion was rapid but marred by tragedy. The Principal, Mr. David Chen was assassinated by Communist terrorists. The Acting Principal who took over Mr. Chen's position and several teachers and students were also murdered by terrorists. 1957- Malaya achieved independence and the Chung Ling High School began to operate as a private school administered by the government. 1970-80s Instruction was gradually switched to the Malay language. English and Chinese were consigned to secondary importance. 1990 - The current enrolment of the Chung Ling High School is approximately 6000 spread over 3 campuses. Most graduates of my generation are successful businessmen and professionals. We have about 100 alumni settled in North America. My own association with the school spanned over half a century and three generations. My father taught school there from the thirties until I graduated in 1948.
