PANGKOR

This website is about Pulau Pangkor aka Pangkor Island.

But before we go any further, I should mention how the idea for this website came about. Sometime in Nov 2003, I was looking for a place to go for a short holiday. I live in Singapore and I wanted to go to somewhere with a beach. Now, Singapore, if you don't know, is a tiny island state smack in the middle of South East Asia. Two things you should know about Singapore. First, we do not have any nice beaches. Secondly and fortunately for us, we are surrounded by many other countries which have beautiful beaches, like Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. Krabi, Phuket and Koh Samui in Thailand, Bali in Indonesia, Tioman and Redang in Malaysia are just some of the many examples.

Unfortunely, I was unable to get on a flight to any of the above mentioned places because they were all fully booked. So it was by chance, while wandering around a Visit Malaysia travel fair that I stumbled onto Pangkor.

Many Singaporeans have heard of Pangkor but few have ever visted the place. This is a little strange because Pangkor has been a holiday destination for Malaysians for ages. Most of the information I got about Pangkor was from a brochure published by the Malaysian Tourist Commission. Not surprisingly, it promised white sandy beaches, virgin rainforests and all the other usual cliched phrases that you would expect from such a travel brochure.

I had a little more luck on the Internet from some websites put up by individuals but most of the links were to hotels on the island. To cut a long story short, by trial and error, I eventually made a trip to Pangkor from 25 to 28 November 2003. From my stay there, I found much of the information that I had obtained on the Internet was either inaccurate or inadequate. As such, what I hope to do here is to consolidate all most of the useful information that is already on the Internet and add my own experiences here. So hopefully, it will be the most comprehensive travel guide to Pangkor in the whole world!
