Well, to put it simply he's only the coolest, hottest, intelligent, most creative, bass-playing guy in the world, from the band Blur. Who gets a kick out of looking cool and smoking a fag, and we love him for it!
full name: Steven Alex James
birthday: November 21, 1968
hometown: Bournemouth, England
family: his dad sold forklifts, and he has a sister named Deborah, which he named
school: he was very bright, getting 13 "O" levels and 3 "A" levels(one of his majors being french which means he's bilingual!) But, he wasn't very good at music and even got kicked out of his recorder class. He went to Goldmiths college and left with an unfinished degree.
music:when he was 11, he got a piano for £100, and when he was 16 he could not afford a keyboard, so he got a Fender Precision bass copy for £50 (more as a fashion accessory)
jobs before music: between college and highschool, he worked in Safeway selling cheese and later at Winfrith Nuclear Power Station. He also played a few games for Southampton's F.C reserve team.
Other bands: The Age of Consent, Mr Pang's Big Bangs, Me Me Me
Past Blur names: Circus, Seymour
How he came to join Blur:Alex went to Goldsmiths' College to study French, and right away met Graham Coxon. They became friends (because their rooms were right underneath each other) Graham was part of a band which included Damon Albarn and Dave Rowntree. Alex told the band that they were shit, Damon was impressed and they became friends. Then when two band members quit, he invited Alex to join since he knew he had a bass (but couldn't play very well). Graham and Alex left school.
The years with Blur: The record companies didn't like the name "Seymour" so they changed it to Blur. They were also upset with Alex's bass-playing abilities, but he improved over the years. When Blur became famour, around their third album, Biffo, a friend described Alex as the same guy he's always been.Despite their supposed rivalry with Oasis, Alex has always said they were a good band.
touring: Alex seems to be the only band member that loves touring. He love popstar life.
Me Me Me: Although the rest of the band didn't seem thrilled, during the middle of 1996, Damien Hirst, a good friend of Alex's, asked Alex to write a song for him for his film, 'Hanging Around'. Alex put together a supergroup called Me Me Me, wich included himself, Stephen Duffy, Justin Welch (drummer of Elastica), and old-school friend Charlie Bloor. They recorded three songs released as a single ('Hanging Around', and b-sides 'Hollywood Wives' and Tabitha's Island').
