Welcome to the Alberta Shito-Ryu

Itosu-Kai Karate Website

Itosu-Kai is one of the four major karate styles of Japan. It combines the features of the two great traditions of Okinawan and Japanese karate. 'Itosu-Kai" indicates our following of perhaps the greatest master of karate of the last two centuries, Yasutune Itosu (1830-1915). The word "Shito" is formed from parts of the names of Itosu Sensei and Higashionna Sensei, a master in his own right. "Kai" and "Ryu" both mean "style" or "school".

The present leader of our style is Sadaaki Sakagami, 9th Dan, and the fourth master of Itosu-Kai after masters Yasutune Itosu, Kenwa Mabuni and Ryusho Sakagami.

The Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre's Karate Club can trace its roots back to 1963, when Sensei Kei Tsumura commenced teaching the Centre's first martial arts program. After a period of study in Japan, Sensei Kei Tsumura 5th Dan, established the Shito-Ryu Itosu-Kai program in 1969.  In 1979 Sensei Kei Tsumura received his 6th Dan Shihan rank. He received his 7th Dan in 1991 and his 8th Dan in1999. Shihan Kei Tsumura is currently the highest ranking Itosu-Kai practitioner outside of Japan.

The Alberta branch of Itosu-Kai Karate was established in 1979, as a non-profit association, teaching in co-operation with the Federation of Community Leagues, Parks and Recreation and Further Education.

Chief instructor for Alberta is Sensei Joe Barrau, 5th Dan. Assistant chief instructors for Alberta, Sensei Tony Baller 5th Dan and Sensei Mario Dilillo 4th Dan along with all our instructors have been trained by Shihan Kei Tsumura and are certified black belts, registered in Japan with the All Japan ltosu-Kai in Yokohama, and the Federation of All Japan Karate-Doh Organization (FAJKO) in Tokyo.

ltosu-Kai is one of the true classical karate of feudal Okinawa. Not only does it combine the two great traditions of Okinawan karate (Itosu and Higonna) it is considered in Japan to be the foremost in teaching Kobudo, the use of ancient weapons. And, although rooted solidly in centuries of tradition and grim experience, Itosu-Kai gives plenty of emphasis to the modern innovation of the sport of karate.
