The Philippine national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, wrote two books which helped fan the flames of the Philippine revolution against Spain in 1898. This poem is dedicated to the character of Sisa, in Jose Rizal's book, "Noli Me Tangere".
SISA BY CANDLELIGHT

Weeping candle, weeping mother’s heart
Flickering light, wavering mother’s hope
Throwing ghostly shadows on nipa walls
Moving eerie shadows on bamboo floor.
Fallen black tresses sweeping bamboo sill,
Anxious eyes straining far into cold, black night.
Trembling hand, trembling candlelight,
Dying candle, dying hope.
