This is the second of a series of four poems written for the author's husband, Doc H. N. Navarro, when he was sent by the Philippine government to Singapore in 1967 for specialized training in public health.

Because

by Luz D. Navarro

If tears could mend the heart
As dew could heal the flower,
Then dear, I would not grieve,
Because you are not here.

But then the heart is such
A sad and tender thing
Though it may be steel like a shield.
It breaks, because you are not here.
