Blue Seed 2 - Operation Mitama: Phase One

Episode Summary

The episode opens in San Francisco, California, where there appears to be a problem with the trolley lines. When two men go to investigate they find the lines are overrun with giant vines. These "ivies" turn out to be more than mere plants, however, when both men are killed by them and a giant aragami, who is crowned with a glowing red mitama, rises from the ground.

In Japan: Kunakida has been informed of the situation, but finds it hard to believe. How can Arigami be running amuck when Susano-oh is sleeping? Matsudaria says she's not sure if Susano-oh has been awakened... she's not even sure what the red mitamas mean. True to character, she refuses to rely on instinct and insists that she spend more time analyzing the data. Kunakida continues to analyze the video tape of the trolley line attack and notices a pink-haired kid, who runs up to the aragami, then uses her whip to destroy the video camera. Kunakida starts to study the mysterious girl more, but the power suddenly goes out. A giant aragami erupts through the lower floors of the TAC building, causing it to crash to the ground...

Matsudaria takes a break from her work to see Momiji, who is studying mitamas on a lower level. Matsudaria tells Momiji that she (Momiji) has always been immersed in her study of mitamas. But isn't she doing it for Kusanagi? The two take a walk outside and Momiji confesses that Kusanagi hasn't been spending much time with her. And when he does spend time with her, he seems distant, as if he isn't having any fun. Matsudaria assures her that Kusanagi is only anxious. She says that her husband acted the same way on her final year of schooling, in order to let her finish her graduating thesis. Kusanagi has no reason to leave Momiji. To prove her point, Matsudaria points to the opposite side of the fountain, where Kusanagi has quietly appeared.

Momiji is ecstatic to see him. Kusanagi, however, remains somber. As they embrace, the pink-haired girl from the video watches them from afar.

Matsudaria waves them off, then tells herself that she shouldn't tell them about the red mitamas until they have been confirmed.

Meanwhile, Tacheuchi is on a mission when she receives a phone call from Sugishita. He tells her to remain calm, then explains that Kunakida was in an accident at the TAC building with no known cause.

Sugi calls Yaegashi and asks him what he thinks. Yaegashi suggests a terrorist attack, but Sugi says that all they know is that it was an attack on the government. Yaegashi says that they should notify Momiji. Sugi says she's been gone from the lab, and Yaegashi begins to consult several maps he has taped to his wall.

Susano-oh Memorial Park: Kusanagi and Momiji are relaxing at the park while the pink-haired girl watches them from a distance. Momiji asks Kusanagi if she is any fun to be with, and he replies (somewhat distracted) that she is, and he wouldn't ask her to come with him if she wasn't. Momiji asks to go see Kusanagi's room so she can help him clean it. She drags him off just in time to miss Yaegashi.

Momiji insists for Kusanagi to hurry, and he argues that his room isn't dirty. Momiji flings open the door and, true to his word, the apartment is spotless. Momiji sits on the bed, disgruntled, and asks Kusanagi if he wants some coffee. When he offers a hand to help her up she pulls him onto the bed with her.

Kusanagi stares into her eyes for a minute, then pulls away, calling her a dummy and telling her not to "stretch." He calls her a child and Momiji insists that she's not a child anymore.

TAC remains: Sugi tells Takeuchi over the phone that from the state of devastation, he doesn't doubt it was a monster attack. Specifically, an aragami attack. Yaegashi interrupts, saying that if it was an aragami, it wasn't the ones they had encountered previously. With the exception of Kusanagi, all aragami have been sleeping since Susano-oh went to rest. He reminds them that there is no way for the aragami to wake while Susano-oh's mitama is at rest. Takeuchi comments that isn't the only problem--the Kushinada data was stolen from the host computer via cable. How could an aragami bond with a machine? Takeuchi insists that Momiji is the enemy's goal and urges Sugi to find her. Sugi says he believes Momiji is safe as long as she's with Kusanagi...

Meanwhile, Momiji is on the subway, alone...

Kusanagi is walking through the streets by himself. He accidentally bumps into a man, who tells him to watch where he's going. The two exchange rude words and the guy's friend gets involved. The fight is easy for Kusanagi, who simply dodges the blows of the others while hitting them with enough force to knock them off their feet. As the fight ensues, the pink-haired girl watches from the crowd. One of the men pulls a knife, threatening to kill Kusanagi. Kusanagi responds by using his mitamas. They begin to glow and his knives, two large arm-blades, explode from his skin. The two thugs scream monster and run away. Kusanagi mutters, "That's right. I'm a monster. My presence would bring her misfortunes." The pink-haired girl approaches him. He screams for her to go away. She addresses him by name and tells him that she understands his situation, patting her chest as she does so. The conversation is cut short when the girl gasps and announces that Momiji is in trouble. She takes off, with Kusanagi following close at her heels.

Momiji is at a park. An enormous aragami emerges from the pond behind her and takes off after her. It strikes her, sending her body flying, but she is saved by Kusanagi.

Meanwhile, Matsudaria tells Sugi and Yeagashi that she discovered there were artificial chimera aragami. These aragami were created by a person and are not under Susano-oh's control.

Kusanagi is battling the aragami with the pink-haired girl, who tells him that mitamas were taken out of Japan a long time ago. In the midst of fighting and taking the pink-haired girl is struck sharply and she falls to the ground near Momiji. Kusanagi runs to her to make sure she's okay and notices that she has a mitama in her chest. Yaegashi, Takeuchi and Sugi have already arrived and they shield Momiji while firing at the aragami, who retreats into the water. Momiji opens her eyes long enough to see Kusanagi holding the pink-haired girl, then she fades back into unconsciousness.

Later, Takeuchi assures the rest of the group that Kunakida will be okay after he rests. She asks Yaegashi where Kome is and he replies that he doesn't know. Takeuchi, embarrassed, apologizes for asking--Kome and Yaegashi broke up, after all. Matsudaria asks about Momiji and Sugi insists that he put her in a safe place.

The "safe place" consists of a giant swimming pool surrounded by hundreds of charms and talismans. Momiji is accompanied by Sakura, who is supposed to guard her, but an Arigami manages to break through the talismans' shield anyway. The Arigami ensnares both girls and moves into the city.

Meanwhile, Takeuchi and company are shocked that the Arigami broke the shield. To Takeuchi's disdain, no one knows how to contact Kome--not even Yaegashi. Fortunately, Kusanagi and Valencia arrive on the scene and begin to battle the Arigami after saving Sakura and Momiji. To Kusanagi's surprise Valencia transforms, revealing that she, like him, contains the power of mitama. They defeat the Arigami with the help of Kome, who arrives in time to crash a helicopter into it.

Later, the TAC girls are scrutinizing their new TAC uniforms--specifically the short skirts. Though Sugishita likes the skirts, Takeuchi isn't so sure. ^-^;; Kunakida is healing nicely, and Kusanagi arrives and reveals that their enemy is in San Francisco. Kunakida explains that an American scientist (of course :P) has been using Bio Technology to create Arigami. Kusanagi introduces Valencia, a 16 year old Cancer, to the team.

Next stop, San Francisco!
