Blue Seed 2 - Operation Mitama: Phase 1

Transcript painstakingly typed by schally.

Two trolleys nearly collide at an intersection, causing confusion amongst the passengers and other parts of traffic.

Man 1: All the lines stopped?

Man 2: Yeah, unbelievable. And it had to happen on my shift.

Man 1: What the...

Man 2: You've got to be kidding.

Inside, the control room is overrun by massive vines. In the background we can see a few of them twitching (eew!). One of the men picks up one of the vines.

Man 1: Ivies? How'd this happen?

The vine in his hand suddenly springs to life, grabbing him and dragging him below the platform. There is a spray of blood. His companion turns, alarmed.

Man 2: What happened? What is it? Did you go down there?

The second man walks down the platform, and below it, we can see the vines writhing. As he nears the edge, a massive, red-eyed creature emerges from the ground and crushes him.

Meanwhile, we flash to a computer screen, where the security camera footage is being played.

Matsudaria: So that's the one in San Francisco.

Kunikida: That's right.

Matsu: Look at this.

A window opens, and a picture of an orange mitama embedded into the monster is shown, then enlarged.

We see Kunikida is at a computer, and that Mastu is talking to him through it.

Kunikida: Is this possible? Susano-oh is in a deep sleep. As long as he doesn't wake up...

Matsu: You're right, but...

Kunikida: He has risen?

Matsu: We don't know that.

Kunikida: Why America?

Matsu: We don't know.

A picture of a blue mitama superimposes over the orange one. Several graphs appear on the screen. Back at her office, Matsu startles.

Matsu: Don't tell me... It can't be!

Kunikida: What does your scientific instinct tell you?

Matsu: I don't want to rely on my instincts. I'll further evaluate the data.

She closes the communication window with Kunikida.

Matsu: This can't be... this can't be happening.

Back at the TAC, Kunikida looks out the window.

Kunikida: So it was just a rest for these two years?

Something catches his eye on the security camera video. He takes a closer look and sees a mysterious, pink-haired girl run by and disable the camera with a whip. He rewinds the video and zooms in on the girl's face.

Kunikida: Who's that kid? (Suddenly, the power goes out.) Hey!

The room begins to shake and an aragami with a glowing orange mitama explodes from the floor.

Kunikida: Mitama! Aragami!

Outside, we see the TAC building crash to the ground.

[ Intro Sequence (a nice recap of Nightfall)]

We see Momiji working on a computer in the lab, wearing a pair of glasses that rival Sakura's in size. The screen has images of mitamas on it. Matsu enters and calls to her.

Matsu: You've been saying that you want to research the power of the Kushinada for uses as an energy source. (Momiji is surprised by the interruption and starts) But in fact you're doing all this for Kusanagi, aren't you? You've always been immersed in your work with mitamas.

Momiji: Ms. Matsudaira!

Matsu: But it's true, isn't it? (She pats Momiji's cheek) Momiji?

Momiji removes her glasses and smiles. Cut to the outside of the building. We see the women walking, in mid-conversation with each other.

Momiji: ...but I might cheat on him. He won't take me out nowadays. And even when we do meet, he seems so bored.

Matsu: He's just anxious about you. You have your exams next year. My husband was like that the year I graduated in order to let me finish up my thesis.

Momiji: Ms. Matsudaria...

Matsu: So don't worry. There's no reason for Kusanagi to leave your side. See there?

Matsu points to Kusanagi, who is standing on the other side of the fountain they are facing.

Momiji: (very excited) Kusanagi!

Kusanagi: I can't help showing up. (he watches Momiji as she runs to him)

Behind a building near the fountain, the pink-haired girl is watching them. Cut to later, Momiji is with Kusanagi and she's dressed to go out.

Momiji: I'll be back! (waves to Matsu)

Matsu waves cheerfully from the window of the lab, but when the couple leaves, her face becomes serious.

Matsu: I shouldn't tell those two yet. It hasn't been confirmed yet...

The phone rings.

Takeuchi: Okay, we'll commence with the plan. (someone gives her a phone) Emergency call? For me?

Cut to Sugishita in a garage with a sports car.

Takeuchi: Oh, it's you, Sugi!

Sugi: Listen to this calmly...

Cut to Takeuchi. Her eyes widen in surprise.

Take: What did you say? What is the situation?!

Cut to Kunikida in a hospital gurney, being rushed down the hall by a group of doctors and nurses.

Sugi: ...was completely destroyed. Mr. Kunikida was inside. Cause unidentified.

Yaegashi: Maybe the enemy was a terrorist group or something?

We cut to Yaegashi in an office, talking on the phone and working on a computer at the same time.

Sugi: Couldn't say. We know yet if there is an enemy involved. We just know that the nation was attacked.

Yaegashi: Did someone tell Momiji?

Sugi: No, it happened after she left the lab. I left a message on her answering machine.

Yaegashi: (messes with some papers on the wall) This may sound silly, but... (his gaze lingers on a picture of a massive tree)

Cut to an area with a large tree.

Sign: SUSANO-OH MEMORIAL PARK

Momiji and Kusanagi lean against a building as the wind gently blows.

Momiji: Nice breeze. I wish it'd be like this forever.

Kusanagi: Like this... forever?

The comment seems to make him unhappy and Momiji's face falls a little bit. Meanwhile, we see that the pink-haired girl is still spying on them from afar.

Momiji: Is it fun... being with me...?

Kusanagi: Why are you asking that all of a sudden?

Momiji: I'm happy being together. But what about you?

Kusanagi: Of course.

Momiji: (gives a small smile) Is it fun?

Kusanagi: I wouldn't invite you if it weren't. Let's go.

Momiji: (clearly upset by his abruptness) Kusanagi, can I go to your place? (she grabs his hand) I'll help you clean up your room. Okay? Let's go! (she drags him off)

Yaegashi pulls up in a van and peers at the area where Momiji and Kusanagi previously stood.

Yaegashi: Momiji? (pushes buttons, opening a nearby garage) Last time I was here was two years ago. Nothing has changed since that day. Nothing.

Cut to Kusanagi's apartment

Momiji: C'mon, Kusanagi, hurry up!

Kusanagi: My house isn't a mess.

Momiji: Sure, I'll bet it's--(Momiji opens the door to find the apartment Spartan and spotless)--it's clean.

Kusanagi: Of course.

Momiji: This is boring. (Momiji sits on the bed)

Kusanagi: Here, let me make some coffee for you. H-hey... (Momiji pulls him onto the bed with her)

After a quiet moment, Kusanagi pulls away.

Kusanagi: Dummy, don't stretch.

Momiji: Stretch? (schally: I was wondering the same thing... I guess he means he doesn't want to make out)

Kusanagi: You... you're still a child.

Momiji: No I'm not. I'm not a child anymore, stupid!

Momiji gets upset and runs away, leaving Kusanagi to stand alone in his apartment.

Terrestrial Management Office Remains, Shinjyuku

Sugi is talking on the phone with Takeuchi. Matsudaria is examining data on a computer.

Take: Sugi, how are things there?

Sugi: We think that it was a rather large monster, judging from the wreckage.

Take: Then it was...

Sugi: Right. We have no doubt it was an aragami.

Yaegashi: No, it wasn't. (All turn to look at him) At least not one of those which we've dealt with before.

Sugi: Why not?

Yaegashi: Susano-oh's mitama hasn't changed a bit in the last two years. (We see scenes of Yaegashi at Susano-oh's Memorial, examining data.) If we exclude the half-aragami Kusanagi, all aragami have ceased activity since Susano-oh went to sleep. It's impossible for an aragami to appear as long as Susano-oh's mitama is resting.

Sugi: Then how do you explain this?

Take: There are more mysteries. The Kushinada data was stolen.

Sugi: Chris told you that? (schally: I have no idea who Chris is, I guess just a random person)

Take: Yes. The data was directly accessed and taken from the host computer's data cable.

Sugi: How can an aragami fuse with a machine?

Take: Anyway, the enemy's objective is the Kushinada. Can't you get a hold of Momiji yet?

Sugi: She's alright as long as she's with Kusanagi...

Cut to Momiji riding the subway alone. Then we see Kusanagi walking down the street. He bumps into a man walking the opposite direction.

Man: Hey, bro. Watch where you're going! (When Kusanagi doesn't respond, the man runs over and grabs his shirt.) Hey, say something!

Kusanagi: Fuck off.

Man: What did you say?! (He swings at Kusanagi and misses, hitting the ground.)

Man 2: Punk! (He also attacks Kusanagi, who easily ducks his punch and knocks him down.)

A crowd has started to gather, and amongst the onlookers is the pink-haired girl, who is watching with some interest. Kusanagi tosses both of the men into a nearby alley.

Man 2: I'll kill you! (Pulls out a knife.)

Kusanagi: Shut the fuck up. (His mitamas begin to glow and his arm-blades emerge.) Who'll be first?

Man: Monster!!

The two men take off, terrified.

Kusanagi: That's right. I'm a monster. My presence would bring her misfortune... (The pink-haired girl walks up behind him; Kusanagi senses her presence.) This ain't a show! Back off if you don't want to get hurt!

Girl: Mamoru Kusanagi. Though you possess mitamas, you're the only man who didn't become an aragami.

Kusanagi: (turns and looks at her) Who the hell are you?

Girl: I understand how you feel.

Kusanagi: What?

Girl: I can understand, because--(She reaches for her chest)

Kusanagi: Understand what?!

Cut to a shot of a spider aragami. The girl's eyes widen in alarm.

Girl: Momiji is in trouble! Let's go, Mamoru! (she takes off)

Kusanagi: What? Wait! Who are you?

Girl: An aragami is after her!

Kusanagi: Aragami?!

We see Momiji standing near a lake.

Momiji: Stupid. He's so stupid.

She turns her back to the water and we see an aragami emerge. Momiji turns at the sounds of water splashing and sees the glowing orange mitama embedded in the monster.

Momiji: A-aragami!

She runs, but the aragami comes after her, throwing her high into the air with a massive claw. Kusanagi catches her, and deposits the now-unconscious in a safe place.

Kusanagi: You! Mitama? I thought so! Why?

Matsudaria is driving down the road with Sugi, Yaegashi is following.

Matsu: Science gave birth to the devil.

Sugi: What?

Matsu: We found out from several of the mitamas that there are artificially created chimera aragami out there.

Sugi: So you're saying that there's a human behind all of this?

Yaegashi: (on radio) Then where did the mitama come from? You think that not all of the mitamas were controlled by Susano-oh?

Cut to Kusanagi and the girl, who are fighting with the aragami. More aragami like it appear throughout the scene.

Girl: Mitamas were taken outside of Japan a long time ago.

Kusanagi: What?

Girl: Numerous treasures were spread out from Japan as offerings back in the yamato era. Of course they included mitamas.

Kusanagi: Then they are real mitamas.

Girl: But they were placed scientifically within living organisms by the hands of wicked people. That's where these guys come from, most likely.

Kusanagi: Now I understand.

One of the aragami slips into the water and disappears.

Kusanagi: Shit. He got away.

Another aragami appears and hits the girl from behind, knocking her unconscious and throwing her body near where Momiji is resting.

Kusanagi: Are you okay? (Kusanagi grabs the girl and he sees that her shirt is torn, exposing an orange mitama on her chest.) Hey! A mitama... you're the same as me...

Sugi, Matsu and Yaegashi have arrived and they stand around Momiji and shoot at the aragami, scaring it back into the water.

Sugi: (lifts Momiji) So it was an aragami...

Momiji wakes and sees Kusanagi holding the girl in his arms.

Momiji: Kusanagi... Who's that...? (fades back into unconsciousness)

Cut to Kunikida in bed. Takeuchi tucks the covers around him. She goes into another room, where Sugi, Matsu and Yaegashi are waiting.

Matsu: How is he?

Take: All right. He'll be okay if he rests a bit longer. He's a tough guy.

Sugi: You don't seem to be very worried.

Take: Anyway, we'll be needing Koume's help to beat that aragami. Yaegashi, where is she now?

Yaegashi: (looks crestfallen) I don't know.

Take: Sorry... You two broke up, didn't you?

Matsu: Is Momiji okay?

Sugi: Don't worry, I put her in a safe place for the time being.

The Sports Center is covered with magic charms. Momiji is in the center of the swimming pool, surrounded by ropes of talismans.

Momiji: Kusanagi... (Sakura grabs her breasts from behind; Momiji kicks and screams) Stop!

Sakura: Wow, you're getting bigger.

Momiji: What do you mean by that? You should be more tense when there's an aragami around!

Sakura: You don't look tense yourself. (Squeezes Momiji's breasts)

Momiji: (cross) And? When are you letting go?

Sakura: (Squeezes her again) Like it?

Later, Momiji is sitting on the edge of the pool. The circle of talismans is still around her.

Momiji: It's like... we were suddenly apart, and I don't understand why he won't come to me.

Sakura: He might have a new girl.

Momiji remembers how Kusanagi was holding the pink-haired girl earlier, and she starts to get weepy. Sakura grabs her leg and pulls her into the water.

Sakura: Wake up and straighten up, Momiji. Don't you believe in Kusanagi?

Momiji: That--

The walls shake and crumble as an aragami attacks the building. Both girls are thrown into the air and fall on top of it, only to be ensnared by strange tentacles.

Momiji: What is this?!

Sakura: It's lumpy!

Onlookers watch as the monster begins to destroy the surrounding buildings.

Man: What's that?

Woman: It's a monster!

Cut to Sugi on the phone, surrounded by other members of the TAC.

Sugi: What? It broke through the shield? Yaegashi, are you sure you can't get a hold of Koume? We're really in big trouble!

Yaegashi: I haven't heard from her since she moved.

Take: Why'd you two have to break up?!

Sugi: Forget it. We'd better move.

Announcer: Attention! We have received word of a huge monster coming this way from West Kokubun-ji Station! Please evacuate towards the nearest turnstiles! I repeat, there is a huge monster headed this way from West Kokubun-ji Station! Please evacuate towards the nearest turnstiles!

The aragami appears and makes short work of the station. There's a bit more aragami!smash, and then the TAC arrive.

Take: So that thing destroyed the Terrestrial Management Office.

Sugi: No doubt about it.

The aragami grows some arms and yet more aragami!smash ensues.

Momiji and Sakura: Help!

Kusanagi and the girl drive up on a motorcycle.

Kusanagi: Momiji!

Girl: Let me do it! (She jumps from the bike)

Kusanagi: What?!

The girl yells and transforms [a la manga Momiji], growing armor not unlike Kusanagi's.

Kusanagi: You're one as well... (schally: Kusa really has a knack for stating the obvious, doesn't he?) I see. Interesting.

The girl uses her powers to free Momiji and Sakura, and Kusanagi catches them and deposits them safely on the ground.

Momiji: Kusanagi!

Kusanagi: You okay?

The rest of the TAC arrives.

Kusanagi: Look after them.

Momiji: Kusanagi!

Kusanagi transforms and attacks.

Kusanagi: There! (He destroys the aragami's mitama) Sucker!

Girl: Not bad. My turn. (An aragami catches her in its claw) Shit! (She defeats it)

Kusanagi: Are you okay?

Girl: Of course!

The BIG aragami approaches.

Kusanagi: Here it comes...

Voice: Kusanagi!

They both turn to see Koume approaching in a helicopter.

Koume: Watch out! Get outta the way!

Kusanagi: Hey, the human tanker is here! Okay, it's all yours

Yaegashi: Koume...

Koume: One, two... there! (She jumps out of the helicopter before it crashes into the aragami, killing it and taking a whoooooole lotta buildings with it. I pity Japanese insurance providers.)

Koume: Sucker.

Take: Wait a sec. What in the world is this?

Sugi: I said that's the new office uniform.

Momiji: No, we mean the length of this skirt!

Cut to the Blue Seed girls in their new "office uniforms," which are rather short.

Sugi: I think it's wonderful! It enhances a woman's beauty!

Take: What's the use of this? Oh, this is embarrassing...

Sugi: Why? Ryoko, you'll get used to it.

Take: Who thought of having uniforms in the first place?

Sugi: Me, Director Shunishi Sugishita of the new Territorial Management Office.

Take: What? You're the new director?!

Sugi: It was written on the door, wasn't it?

As this exchange goes on, Koume is giggling about their banter, but when she sees the hurt look on Yaegashi's face, she quickly averts her eyes.

Take: Oooh, I'm going home to sleep now.

Kunikida's face appears on a communication monitor. We can see he's still bedridden.

Kunikida: Wait. About the aragami... We found out that it's a special breed of plant that germinates only in America.

Momiji: Director!

Sakura: Hi! You look fine, old man.

Matsu: The problem is whether this aragami can be reproduced.

Koume: Ha! No aragami will get in our way!

Kusanagi's voice: Don't let it come to us. We'll go to it.

Momiji: Kusanagi?

Everyone turns.

Kusanagi: The enemy is in San Francisco.

Take: What do you mean?

Kunikida: An American scientist became interested in the powers of mitama. He successfully created an aragami through bio technology and made use of the Kushinada data to maximize the aragami's powers. Kusanagi: This girl will help us out.

Girl: Hi!

Momiji: Who...?

Kusanagi: Just like me, she has a mitama, but she didn't become an aragami.

Momiji: Mitama?

Girl: Valencia Tachibana. I'm a 16 year-old cancer. Nice to meet you.

Sugi: Same here, cutie.

Kunikida: You mustn't allow any more aragami incidents.

Valencia: Let's go! To San Francisco!

Momiji: San Francisco...

Cut to a plane taking off.
