3 Voice: Child, I have decided.  I will give you seven souls.

 

4 Voice: Become the strongest man on earth.  Find Princess Kushinada and protect her!

Narration: It was October 10th, 1980

 

6 Narration: In Izumo, Japan.

 

7 Momiji: I feel something strange through those trees.

Grandmother: An ill omen.  Have one more shower.

Momiji: Please, let me go.  I'll catch cold.

 

8 Grandmother: What?

Momiji: I. Will. Catch. Cold!

Grandmother: Oh, I'm fine.

Momiji:  I'll be late for school.

Grandmother: Momiji...

Momiji: Okay.

 

9 Narration: My name is Momiji Fujimiya.  I'm fifteen years old.  I'll be a freshman in high school starting this April, in 1999.  I'm a normal student, even though I have a really strange family.

Momiji:  I'll bet taking a cold shower to clean the soul isn't normal for a high school student.

 

10 Momiji: I just want to have a normal life.  Like having a boyfriend or sleeping late.  You know, Ah-chan?

Ah-chan: ...

Momiji: The forbidden real world.

Ah-chan: I've heard this a hundred times.  I already told you, the only way to live a normal life is to quit all those weird religious rituals.

Momiji: Yeah, I know.  Actually, I don't even know what I'm preparing myself for...

Grandmother: Remember, Momiji.  Your life is not your own.  It is for all the people of Japan.

 

11 Grandmother: Don't be tempted by frivolous things.  When the time comes you will have to devote your life to the people of Japan.

Momiji: Right.

Momiji: I've been taught that ever since I was a little kid.  I've accepted it as my destiny.

Ah-chan: I don't understand it.  It's so old-fashioned.

Momiji: ...What?  I sense something...

Ah-chan: Hey, Momiji, hurry up!

Momiji: I'll catch the next bus.

17 Kusa: She's mine.  You beat me yesterday, but not today.  I'll kill her.  I'll beat you and then I'll be free.  I know you've got less power in the daytime.

Momiji: Just... let me... go!

 

18 Momiji: I'll call the police!  STOP IT!

Kusa: I was careless with you.

Momiji:  What's that...?  A blue bead?

 

19 Kusa: It's hard to believe a klutzy girl like you could move faster than me.  Even I'm powerless under the sun.

Kunikida:  Is there a way through this road?

 

20 Kusa:  See you tonight.  I'll kill you then.

Momiji: Kill me?!

Kida: Do you know where I can find the Fujimiya's house?

Momiji:  Huh?  My house?

Kida: I'm from Tokyo and I got lost.  Oh, it's already 8:30...

Momiji: Damn!  I'm late for school!  Go back to Ichiban city and go north!

Kida: Hey...

 

21 Kida: This is a special ceramic, but why is it here?  They've already found her.  I have to hurry.

 

22 Ah-chan: Where have you been?  You're late.

Momiji: I don't feel well.

Ah-chan: Huh?

Kusa: I'm sorry, but I've come to kill you.

Grandmother:  When the time comes, you will have to devote your life to the people of Japan.

 

23 Momiji: Has the time finally come?  But I don't have a twin sister... and I don't even know what a Kushinada is.

Ah-chan: You're acting weird today.  I bet you took a shower for too long and you caught a cold.

Momiji: Do you know what a Kushinada is?

Ah-chan: You don't know that old legend and you've lived here for fifteen years?  You really are an airhead.

 

24 Kusa: I hate this weather, it makes everything dark...  I can't wait until night.

Momiji: According to Kokiji* there was an elderly couple with eight daughters in Izumo.

Narration:  There was a huge monster, called Yamata no Orochi, with red eyes and eight heads.  The monster came down into the village each year to eat one of the daughters.

25 Narration:  Eventually there was only one daughter left.  The only thing the elderly couple could do was cry.  But Susano-oh, the savior, appeared and beat Orochi.  The last daughter married Susano-oh and she was called Princess Kushinada.

Momiji:  I don't get it.  What does this story have to do with me?  Maybe I really am an airhead.

 

26 Momiji:  Wait, is my family preparing for the Kushinada?  I've got that strange feeling again.  I guess I'll ask grandmother about it later.

Announcer: Momiji Fujimiya of Class D, you have a call from your family...

Momiji: I wonder what-

 

27 Momiji:  What?  What's going on?!  Somebody help!

 

28 Grandmother:  I see.  The Arigami killed Kaede.

Kida: I'm sorry.  I couldn't save her.  And I'm afraid they know about Momiji now.

Grandmother: Hmm.

Kida: We're all very sorry.

Grandmother: Fifteen years ago, when the Arigami awakened, I gave up the lives of my granddaughters.  But I'm afraid that the power of the Kushinada has passed.

 

29 Kida: Don't give up.  Momiji is our hope.  Please let us, the agency, protect her.

Grandmother:  Yes.  If Momiji is in danger-

Mother: Mother, Momiji isn't answering the page at her school...

Momiji: Somebody help me!

 

32 Momiji: Help!  Where are you taking me?!

Orochi: Don't worry, I won't kill you here.  I'm taking you to the ceramic field.

Momiji: Who are you?!  Why are you trying to kill me?!

 

33 Orochi: Because you are the Kushinada.  You have power in your blood.

Kusa: Stop.  She's mine.

Orochi: Kusanagi?!

Kusa: Give me the girl who has the power of Jinchu!

 

34 Orochi: No, I won't!

Kus: You idiot.

 

35 Kusa: You only have one head now.  How can you beat me when I have seven mitamas?

Momiji:  Who are you?!   What's a Jinchu?!

Kusanagi:  It means that if you die, Kushinada, all the monsters will die as well.  So I'll kill you right here.

 

36 Momiji:  Oh God!  Grandmother!!

Kusa: I can't do it.  I can't kill her.

Orochi:  I suspected as much, Kusanagi.

 

37 Momiji: What do you mean?

Kusa: Finding and protecting Princess Kushinada is my mission in life.  For a long time, the Kushinada bloodline served as a sacrifice.  If the Kushinada died without a descendent, all of the Arigami would be forced into a deep sleep.  For the last few hundred years the Arigami have been powerless because of your bloodline.  Your family became a Jinchu and they saved the people.  But fifteen years ago, you and your sister were born on October 10th.  The power of the Kushinada was split between you and the Arigami awakened.

Momiji: I don't have a sister!

Kusa: You were separated from your sister at birth for security reasons.

 

38 Kusa:  There is a government agency that hunts the Arigami.  Your sister was raised by them.

Orochi: We had to avoid your sister until we could make her the Jinchu in a secured place.  Using a human for this purpose was easy.  We have the power to control the human mind.  We used this power to order a human to kill your sister.

Kusa: I failed in my mission to protect the Kushinada.  But now I'll end my mission once and for all!

Momiji:  That means the one my family has been preparing for is me...

Orochi:  Don't worry, Kusanagi.  You won't have to protect anyone anymore.

 

39 Momiji: Are you okay?

Kusanagi:  Stay away!  This is a ceramic field!

Orochi: Yes, the ceramic field will restrict the Jinchu's power.

 

40 Orochi: Human science will nullify the power that has terrified us for thousands of years.

Momiji: Because of the ceramic field, you won't have to protect the Kushinada anymore.

Orochi: Yes.  If we kill the Kushinada now in this field, the power of her blood will have no effect on us.

Kusanagi:  Some people call them monsters, others call them demons.  They are the creatures which have the biggest bodies on earth, and the longest lives... They don't have muscles or brains, but they can control any creature on earth.  Surely you've heard of such plants.

 

41 Momiji: Plants?!

Orochi:  It is time.  Your mind will be mine to control, Kusanagi!

Momiji: No!  I won't let you!

 

44 Grandmother: Momiji!

Mother: Momiji!

Kida: I knew she would be all right.

Momiji:  I was...

Grandmother:  There are many things I must tell you, Momiji.

Momiji:  I know.  It's okay.

 

45 Momiji: Why did you save me?  If I had been killed, all the Arigami would have been put into an eternal sleep, and you would be free of them.  Thank you for saving me...

 Kusanagi:  I just made that Arigami go into hibernation.  I didn't save you or anything, it was just in my best interest to keep you alive.

 

46 Momiji:  What are you gonna do?

Kusa:  Because you're still alive, I still have my powers.  I can't kill you...  I'll destroy all the Arigami instead.  See you later, Momiji Kushinada.

Momiji: See you, Mr. Kusanagi.

Kusa:  Mamoru.  Mamoru Kusanagi.  Fight your destiny.

Momiji:  Yes.  I'll fight against it.

 

BOOK 2: Tobi-Ume (Flying Plum Tree)

 

47 Kusa: Well, well.  I didn't know your tastes ran to this extreme.

Monster: Who... are... you?

Kusa:  I'm the one who has the power to protect the Kushinada.  I came here to destroy you.

 

48 Monster:  Mamoru Kusanagi, you traitor!!

 

51 Kusa: You're a filthy beast.

Monster:  You bastard!

 

53 Kusa: Flying... flying without wings?  What kind of mitama does it have?  What kind of monster is this?

Take: Freeze!

Kusa:  Who are you?

Take: We're members of National Land Management, a government agency!  There's no escape, you monster!

 

54 Kusa: You've got the wrong person.

Narrator:  It was the day before I came to the city.

 

55 Momiji:  Where's the National Land Management?

 

56  Momiji:  I will live in Tokyo from now on.  Romance and adventure await me.  Okay, let's go!  I'm a clumsy girl...

 

57 Kusa:  I see, I see.  You look great, Princess Momiji Kushinada.

Momiji:  You're ... Mr. Kusanagi!

Kusa: You remember me.  So, what are you doing in Tokyo?

Momiji:  I'm going to hunt the Arigami.  I'll use my power to help the NLM.

 

58 Momiji:  Hey, you should join, too.  You're also hunting the Arigami.

Kusa: No thanks.  The NLM thinks I killed a kid last night.

Momiji:  Last night?  What happened?

Kusa: ... Have you ever heard about flying monsters?  Even in old stories?

Momiji:  Actually, I'm not very good at old literature...

Kusa:  I see.  You know, you're a little old to be wearing underwear with cartoon animals on it.  I guess you're too much of a kid for Arigami hunting.

 

59 Momiji:  I'm not a kid!  My mitama still has power!

Kusanagi: Oops.

Momiji:  What's wrong, Mr. Kusanagi?

 

60 Kusa: Momiji, if I were you I wouldn't go with the NLM.  They've got the finger of that Arigami I fought last night.  The monster will come to the NLM looking for it.  You can't beat it.  Just go home to Izumo.

Take: I think you should come with me.

Momiji: W-what?

 

61 Matsu: I can't believe that this is part of an Arigami.

Kida: When Takeuchi and Koume brought this back last night it was still moving.

Matsu:  But it's just an apricot tree!

Kida: Apricot tree?!

 

62 Matsu: Does this mean that we're fighting against divine tree creatures?

Kida: Believing an old legend is probably not the best way to deal with this.  They're probably just creatures that have similar cells to plants.  They don't have a specific shape, or weakness, or vital organs.

Matsu:  I see.  If such creatures existed, the only true explanation would be that they were plants...

Kida:  Yes, all the Arigami have similar features.  But how do they have intelligence?  I want you to analyze it further and see if you can find any weaknesses.

Matsu: Yes sir.

 

63 Koume:  Hey, the composite drawing is ready!

Kida: Koume, you can't enter this room without my permission.

Koume:  You gonna fire me?  Fine!  I want to go back to the Department of Defense, anyway!

Matsu: And I want to go back to the Science and Technology Department, Koume, but for now we all just have to work together.

Yaegashi:  Oh, I want to go back to the Economic Planning Agency, too.

Koume: Shut up, Yaegashi.

Take:  Don't let it get to you, Koume.  Just try to enjoy working here.

 

64 Take:  I'm enjoying this mission.  It's a nice break from the usual police routine.

Kida:  I knew you were the best agent here, Takeuchi.

Yaegashi:  Well, here's the composite drawing of that guy.

Takeuchi:  I brought one of his friends.

 

65 Kida: Momiji!

Yaegashi:  She's Kaede's sister?

Momiji:  I feel something... it's strong here.  There's darkness nearby.

Koume:  Hey, you need permission to enter here.

Momiji:  Be quiet.

 

66 Koume:  Hey, what're you-

Momiji:  Open the curtains!!

 

68 Momiji:  I... Where...?

Take:  Don't move.  I don't trust you yet, Ms. Kushinada.

 

69 Take:  This is a small, secret agency.  We have plenty of guns and other weapons.  Moreover, we are permitted to protect ourselves.  I could kill you right here.  Now, tell me about your friend.  I saw him eating a kid.

Momiji:  No, it's not like that.  We promised to fight against the Arigami together.

Takeuchi:  Fight?  But you're just a Jinchu.

Momiji:  I know.  I need to learn more...

 

71 Koume:  I can't kill anything with this tiny gun!

Takeuchi:  You have to! Try!

Momiji:  What's this feeling...?

 

72 Kusa:  I missed you, ugly.

Momiji:  Mr. Kusanagi!

Kusa: Get out, all of you!

Momiji:  Come on!  I have an idea!

 

74  Kusa:  Thanks.  I've enjoyed myself.  Damn!  It's not dead?!

 

76 Kusa:  It's called the Tobiume.  The flying plum tree.  I found it in old literature.  Well, so much for the flying Arigami.

Momiji:  Our mission has just begun...

 

BOOK 3: Susano-oh

 

79 pilot: Sir, we're almost there.  Should I lower our altitude?

Man:  No, stay at this height.

 

80 pilot: What is that?  I can see a beam of light...

man: Report this to the Vice-prime minister!  It must be an Arigami!

 

81 pilot: It looks like there's someone inside the light!

Man: Aragami...

Aragami: No one may enter this field.  This is the kingdom of the root.

 

82 aragmi:  This is the place of Susano-oh!  Be gone!

 

83 guy: What's that?

Kusanagi: Finally...

 

84 Kida: Vice-Prime minister...

PM:  Surely you've heard about this?  It's our new project.

Kida:  The plan to construct an underground city?  I heard that it was for redesigning Tokyo itself.

PM: Yes.  The Ministry of Construction is developing the technology.  We've spent 160 million since 1989.  We were performing an experiment as part of the project...

Kida: And you found this underground.

 

85 PM: The object has a diameter of one hundred meters.  It looks like a giant blue bulb.  80 out of 300 workers were killed.  200 workers are missing, and 20 were seriously injured.  I would like to hear your thoughts on the matter.

PM: Ah, you're of the Kushinada family.  You're from Izumo, then.  Are you enjoying Tokyo?

Momiji:  Yes, I like it.  Everybody at the MLN has been very nice.

PM: I see.

 

88 PM: Kunikida, the elimination of the Arigami and Susano-oh is your duty.

Kida: But sir-

PM: That's an order from the Prime Minister.  We have prepared a secret government agency-your agency-for this occasion.  You must begin the Jinchu ceremony.

Kida: But she's just a girl!  We can't kill her!

 

89 PM: I know.  I can give you 48 hours, but no longer.  You'll have to eliminate Susano-oh during that time.  The government won't be able to keep this case undercover for much longer.

 

90 Reporter:  Today a helicopter crashed in Yoyogi, leaving an office building in flames.  We've confirmed that this helicopter was registered to the Ministry and...

 

91 Kida:  I'll handle it.  Don't release any information to the public.

Take:  Publicizing this case may not be an option.  We may need the help of the Air Force...

Momiji:  You mentioned "Susano-oh."  He's the god that saved the Kushinada from the 8-headed monster Orochi.

Kida: Not necessarily.  The eight heads symbolize a flood and Susano-oh symbolizes wind.  Some people believe that Orochi and Susano-oh are the same god.

Take: You mean Susano-oh is the leader of the Arigami?

Kida: I don't know.

Take: It's quiet.

Kunikida:  I like her attitude.  Saving her protector, like a heroine in a story.

Take:  Not a chance.  For the DD, Kusanagi is an enemy, too.

139 Yaegashi:  Why can't we contact them?  Takeuchi and Koume are supposed to be protecting Momiji!

144 Momiji:  What?  What's this feeling...  Headache...

Woman:  I can see you for what you really are.  A monster.  It's over, Kushinada.

Momiji:  I feel so bad...
