I'm working at Nishiki juinor High School in Mie. Your article was very interesting to me. Because in my school we are planning to have an internet soon and I'm looking for schools which can exchange e-mail with my students.

This is going to be a big opportunity for my kids to motivate to learn not only English but also culture ect. My school is located in very remote area called "Hekichi". Compared to students in a big city, they don't have so much opportunity to learn English or speak English with an native speaker. Of course ALT comes once a week but I don't think that's enough to motivate to learn English.

I used to live in Canada for 4 years. So I know how wonderful to communicate with people through English. I want my students to have the same excitement as I had. I also want to be a bridege between my students and students in foreign countries. If this plan is sucessful, I want to e-mail to non-English speaking countries too. This will surprise the students because they will realize if they know English, they can communicate with people all over the world.

I work for a pharmaceutical company in Osaka. When I was a high school and university student, I stayed in Montana USA. I stayed at one big farm for three months. They had nine children. I slept with the forth girl who was the same age as me. I spent a wonderful time. And US mother stayed at my house for a month. I did not like to write a letter in English. So I did not write to Montana family for long time. After the big earthquake in Kobe, I got a letter from Montana mother. And I found mother's e-mail address. I send an e-mail and my picture soon. I was embarrassed when I wrote in English. I was afraid of my 'henna' English grammer. She said 'Do not afraid to write in English. It's ok.' Now I know her pleasure and sorrow everyday. I plan to stay her house again. I love e-mails so much. I said hi to everyone in Montana. But I can't do that in Japan. I was an active girl in Montana. But I am not in Japan. I don't know why. I think everyone is tired in Japan. How about you in Japan? Can you say hello to Japanese people in a train?

I agree with your idea. Yes, we Japanese are quite poor to communicate with people whom we have not acqainted with. I stayed in U.S.A for about 9 monthes four years ago. In there, I went to party some times. I have not experienced such kind of party in Japan. In such a party, people who are related with a key-person( it might be a master or not ) come to join. It is not necessary to know all people. And we can find new friends in such party. However, I sometimes found that some Japanese tend to gather with Japanese. They hesitate to communicate with new people. They might say their poor English as a reason. They don't notice that they miss a chance to know new friends. It is huge what I have not known in the world, and there are many many people whom I have not known yet in the world. I want to know as much as possible.

I am interested with International Relationship. I do not think difficult matters such as political things. I just want to do what I can do. Now I work at an office in which we support Exchange Program for high school students. Before, I did another job but I changed. It was my dream to support and to develop International Relationship and still now it is my purpose in my life ( is it exaggerated?). Now I feel happy to support them to go abroad for exchanging culture.

Using Inter-net is a good idea. I think or I believe that there are many people who want to communicate with people in abroad in their hearts. I feel sorry that the project did not work before. However if we find reliable people in abroad, who are interested in communication with us, I think many people tend to join with such a project.

I belong to "PC supporters" in my community-Nara ken Kashibashi, "PC supporters" is a volunteer group set up for the handicapped to help them use computers. We hope that they can vitalize their lives by using computers.

I think it's great the handicapped could participate in social life more actively and I am sure there is no disadvantages regarding using computers between us and them.

It is great to know that you are looking for friends to discuss about E-ma il. E-mail is the greatest invention in 20th century. We can reach even behind the earth in a moment. I'm appreciated the person who invented this.

After I experienced a P.E. teacher of junior high school for long time, I we nt to US for studying Exercise Science. Western Michigan University is the sch ool which gave me a great opportunity to study and to experience American cult ure. Exercise Physiology and biomechanics were my major interests, and I gradu ated there with my thesis titled "the comparative analysis of walking patterns with flip-flops between American and Japanese males". My adviser, Dr. Dawson, were very interested in the contents, and helped me to write it very much. It was given the scholar award for the year. After the graduation in 1997 June, I came back to Japan to get a teaching job, however, as you know it is super d ifficult to get a position in any university now. Then I'm at home being merel y "house-wife", which Dr. Dawson did not want me to be.

Now I exchange E-mail with friends and instractors in Michigan. Since I we nt to US, E-mail became an indispensable thing in my life.

I am a member of the e-mail study group of the TMIT(the university of Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Technology). The group was made by the students finished open lecture(involved many ages). That lecture is called CALL( Computer assists learning language). After that course we made this study group this June. Now we study English conversation and using computer. And we are making our Home page and searching email partner. I think English and computer are only tools ,and what shall we do using these tools? Off course these are very useful to communicate each other.

I think u have already many many e-mails this morning. As u can imagine I also send u shortly after I read ur article titled `Chikyu-Tuusin' at AsahiShinbun.

I also am a very shy retired Japanese man, but I found recently that there is such a convenient way on the computer. And I began writing the letters on computer.

i work here in osaka and although it is hard for me to take a long vacation so often, i manage to go abroad at least twice a year just to see the world. as a result,i got to know many people, some of which i keep in touch via internet. i find it very practical and handy to be able to write to them over internet and of course it is also quite economical.

i do like writing letters so sometimes i write to my friends even if they have an e-mail address, not to mention to those who don't. writing real letters and sending e-mails are two different thngs. it makes me happier to find a letter from one of my friends waiting for me in the mail box when i get home from work, than to find an e-mail. my mother almost always sends a reply with a real letter when i tell her that one of her frieds abroad has sent her an e-mail.(we share one mail adderss but i am always the one to check our mail box) i guess for so me older people like my mother,it is more comfortable to write letters than send e-mails. when she wants to tell somethig to someone who lives in overseas and she doesn't want to wait for a long time, she just make a call or sends a fax. as for me, i don't do that so often as it costs too much.

I am an engineer in my fourties.

I read your description on sunday version of Asahi-Shinbun this morning. I have been also intrested in e-mail as well as WWW very much. E-mail became a vital tool in my life by now. I commenced e-mail communication for around three years ago right after I was recommended to use e-mail by a professor in US who was collaborating with us. Yes. US has been preceding in this field rather than Japan in addition to many others. Once I had an e-mail address, my bisiness field was extended greatly. From September 1 on, I will change my career. New job will be more exciting for me rather than current one. I found the employment opportunity in WWW and sent my resume right away to the address shown in the site. The company, which is a French enterprize, gave me a chance of recruitment and finally we succeeded to engage a contract of employment with each other. Administration manager of the company said to me that I was the first Japanese who sent an e-mail to the company in France directly. However, this will happen frequently even in Japan near future, probably in a year. Above was my personnal experience and thought with respect to e-mail and WWW. I would be happy if you are intrested in those althogh the description was not in detail and you'll have a lot of mails today.

I read the newpaper. It's 'shame' not 'shy' I think. Japanese are almost much self-consciousness. Right word? (from cell phone)

I think to study abroad while young is a good way to know the world better, and to promote the world peace.

I'm now 53 years old. But I had an experience to have an experience as an apprentice in the industry in UK when I was in the university.

I hope you learn much among Japanese people. They are inward-minded or shay, but there are many kind people, especially in the country.

People city looks unfriendly sometimes, but i feel sorry for the people who are tired in the daily tedious job.

I'm of course Japanese, but since I met many missionary people who lived near my house taught me how to express myself more frankly.

I'm in the first year of Buddhist high school and a member of ESS. This summer, I went to stay in home in Australia. After that, I'm exchanging informations with friends there by e-mail. Also I have some pen pals in another countries, but "snail mail" is not convenient. It is not interesting for me to study English in school, but e-mail is very interesting, easy and fast! Our school has no homepage yet, but has a plan to make it, and our ESS is going to help it. I want to know many homepages of high school in foreign countries, and contact with students there.
