ORGANIZATIONS THAT MONITOR HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS:

• The U.S. Department of State and its 1997 Human Rights reports on East Asia and the Pacific.

• The United Nations. Visit the Official WEB Site Locator for the United Nations System of Organizations.

• Amnesty International (Amnesty International Documentation on gopher).

• Rights for All which is Amnesty International's campaign on the USA.

• Gesellschaft für bedrohte Völker (Society for Threatened Peoples) conducts research and documents and distributes information about genocide paying special attention to prevention.

• International Work Group for Indigenous Affairs (In several languages) organized campaigns to put pressure on both governemnts and other international organizations as well as influence public opinion.

• Refugees International monitors and analyzes refugee crises in an effort to develop solutions geared to specific refugee populations.

• International Alert works to promote internal peace through diplomatic means and bring international attention to possible genocidal situations.

• Human Rights Watch has information about their campaigns, and research papers on human rights abuses worldwide located on their website.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

• In the United States, you can contact your representatives in Congress and the White House supporting intervention in countries which are currently committing genocide. Citizens of other countries should contact their governmental representatives.

• Join Amnesty International and keep involved with their efforts.

• Make contributions to humanitarian organizations such as the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, or the World Relief Corporation. A good directory of both governmental and non-governmental humanitarian organizations is located at ReliefWeb. Many organizations allow you to make contributions other than financial.

• Visit Interaction on the web. This organization is one of the largest coalitions of relief, development and refugee agencies.

• One person can make a difference, but it works best if you focus your efforts on one issue at a time. Remember how much history can teach us and how much we have to lose if we don't learn from our mistakes as humans.

EDUCATE YOURSELF

• A good starting place for learning about genocide is the Genocide Research Project or visit Derechos: The Week in Human Rights.

• The University of Minnesota Human Rights Library is and excellents source of documents on human rights and web links. Yale also has site dedicated to Human Rights.

• The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) has a directory of Human Rights Resources at their website.

• R. J. Rummel has created a website devoted to Twentieth Century Democide which is rather extensive. Of particular interest is the page devoted to Defining Democide.

• Human Rights Asia Pacific aims to provide information on human rights violations, issues, conferences and organizations within the Asia Pacific region and link access to relevant Internet sites.
