The Curry Ramen Page!
What's this?
Why, it's the ultimate marriage of convenience foods! The brainchild of Major Katsuragi Misato, this tasty treat is perfect for those nights where the kitchen (for that matter, the whole apartment.. see Misato's humble abode) is a certifiable disaster area, and the dog just ran off with your lovely four-course filet mignon dinner. Here's what you need:
- Instant Cup Noodles: You might want to try those with the soup base packed separately, unless you want your daily recommended intake of sodium from one meal.
- Curry Retort: There are a lot of varieties out there, available in the supermarket section of major Japanese department stores. Choose from mild to hot, and chicken or beef. For authenticity, try Bon Curry Gold, the brand used by Katsuragi-ichii herself!
- Water: You can't cook instant noodles without water!
You will also need:
- A microwave oven
- A microwave-safe jug (for boiling water)
- A largish covered saucepan or similar
- Chopsticks or a fork
And how do we do it, you ask!
- First go boil about 1L of water in the microwave. This will take about 10 minutes if you're using a 700W microwave.
- Open up your cup of noodles and follow the instructions on the pack, except add half the soup base. For more intrepid souls who don't mind high blood pressure, add all the soup base. Also, to make the perfect curry ramen, remember this little tip:
- Follow the instructions on the curry retort pouch. You'll need to put the pack in the saucepan, pour the water over, and let it steep for 3-5 minutes. This usually doesn't work however, and you may need to actually boil the contents of the saucepan instead. The way Shinji does it is to pour the curry into the saucepan and heat the thing over the stove. Don't burn it though!
- When the noodles are cooked and the curry is sufficiently hot, all you have to do is dump the contents of the retort pouch into the cup and give it all a good stir. Serve with Yebisu. Itadakimasu!
