"Mamoru" means either guard or protect, but he goes by the name Kusanagi. As an infant Kusanagi was given seven mitama or blue seeds by Yamama-no-Orochi, which turned him into a part arigami/human fighter with super, plant-like abilites. I'm telling you, you do not want to meet up with this guy in a dark alley!

He was given these blue seeds to protect Momiji, the "Kusinada" so that she would not die as a sacrifice. If she is sacrificed the arigami will be surpressed. In the first episode Kusanagi tries to kill off Momiji so he would be free from his charge, but he does not. The reason? Perhaps, because Momiji reminded him of her twin sister Kaede who was killed.

The TAC (Terrestrial Administration Center), who Momiji joins with is also trying to protect her, but Kusangi does not like them nor will he join them. He tends to pop up just as Momiji is in danger or when the TAC members are not about. How many times has he saved her from the arigami by now? Who knows!

Speaking of his personality... Well, he is fierce terror when in battle. He is a pervert and a humorous character when nothing serious is happening. Kusanagi likes to find out just which animal is on Momiji's underwear everyday. Yet, there is a sweet, caring, and even romantic part somewhere in him. He is even cute and hot in a strange way! What's not to like about him? I would have to say Kusanagi is one of the best darn characters I have ran across in a long while! See for yourself!
