which is acutally the radical "
(gyoku)."
usually means sphere, ball or bead in Japanese (such as 
tamago = egg, 
mizutama = drop of water), but the same kanji character means "jade" in
Chinese. Moreover,
(pronounced "yu" in Chinese") covers all objects that is "lustrous like
liquid but stiff, yet semi-transparent." Therefore,
is not 
("seki" in Japanese, "shi" in Chinese), which is a stone
or rock. However, we use the word 
(houseki in Japanese or baoshi in Chinese), which literally
means "precious stones," to collectively indicate both the gems (crystals)
and the stones (mineral ores). |
