O.K., the first thing I want
to point out is that CLAMP has used weird English on their manga covers.
And somehow I just have to stick to them as rules, for they have appeared
on all copies of Wish manga over the world (very presumptuous thoughts
ne?). Phrases like "Surely, there must be (a) Wish not realized alone"
and "Please say 'Wish' by something one" really annoys me when I have to
use them, but then it sort of reflects CLAMP's style: they present things
that are not politically correct in common people's minds, but gradually
have found their way of making them to accept their ideas. CLAMP is not
just a group of four female manga artists, but four TOUGH female manga
artists who are their own boss in all their business dealings and would
be happy to divorce any publishers if their rights have been offended.
Yet at the same time, CLAMP members are friendly enough to come in touch
with their readers through short comics at the end of most of their manga,
and by holding events such as CLAMP in Wonderland in 1994.
Enough
of my idol worship, but Wish has become my favourite ever since CLAMP's
production of Rg Veda. I enjoyed reading Rg Veda manga for its extravagant
art work and its otherworldly melodramatic story plot which brings a fundamental
success to CLAMP in the early 90s. CLAMP has successfully turned Rg Veda
the manga into a legend that still pounds in its readers' heart whenever
they think of it from time to time. However, although CLAMP has other well-known
productions in the years followed, I don't find an impression as strong
as their early works, probably because CLAMP have changed to make their
works more to the acceptance of children and their parents. Meanwhile,
X has the same extravagant designs and drawings as Rg Veda, but I don't
like it as it is too... gloomy, I supposed? Anyway, Wish revitalized my
excitement towards CLAMP manga because although it is completely imagination,
it is loving, fun and short and sweet. (Ah! Yes! That's it! SHORT &
SWEET is the thing I've always been expecting from CLAMP!) It simply ends
in 4 volumes, and I love it from start 'til the end. (I really hate to
memorize the 7 Seals and 7 Dragons year after year until God knows when...)
Kohaku
is my most favourite character in Wish, and I particularly love his chibi (small) look. CLAMP knows how to make SD characters
adorable, but I just love to see Kohaku being petted by Shuuichirou. His smile is absolutely angelic! However, I don't like how he looks when he
is sad with tears in the manga, especially
when he cries in his chibi form. His eyes look like dead fish eyes to
me then. But the happy ending is what I enjoyed most in reading Wish manga.
People may compare Wish to Clover (also by CLAMP) that they both have their
characters wanting to attain happiness with someone, but I favour Wish's
simplicity and strait forwardness. Clover is a little bit too Sci-Fic that
it lacks Wish's warmth. I can see that CLAMP have viewed modern and future
human beings as a people who seldom reveal or express their feelings to
avoid getting hurt. There is often some "forbiddeness" concerning passion
and love in many CLAMP stories. However, CLAMP have allowed all the Wish
characters' passion be revealed and expressed within the four manga.
The
drawings of Wish is done by Mick Nekoi, not Satsuki Igarashi who did Rg
Veda. The style of art is simple yet pretty, although CLAMP have apologized
in the short comics at the end of Wish 4 that they didn't make the archangels
any prettier. I think I am satisfied with Hisui's lustrous eyes, as well
as the poker face of Shuuichirou. I have to figure less than I have to
with X, which is often cramped with difficult pictures that require time
for the eyes to adjust to.
About the Wish Gift Box production,
I must say that I love the Wish song very, very much! It tells about how
Kohaku is waiting eagerly for Shuuichirou to come to meet him again after
his death. I was really crying with tears when I was doing the translation.
Perhaps only those who have been separated from their loved ones or family
would share the same feelings as mine. Wish and the song make me start
to think how difficult it is for two persons to always stay together. I
have seen too often how my friends have dumped their partners or having
been unfaithful to each other, and so many married couples are divorcing
in these days. Then I remember how a poor farmer has carried his ill wife
throughout China to beg for money to heal her, and how some people have
donated their blood and organs to save the lives of their family members.
But are these JUST A FEW examples of human affection, or are they ALL that
we can find in these days?
I wish that we or our offspring
would not learn true love only from stories, myths or even museums in the
coming future.
