an excersise in setting mood, i think
May stood tall and stiff. she glared at Sierra, like the were teh only people in Earth. Sierra was equally poised with her hand behind her back and fire in her eye. the confused onlookers were silent. thru an unspoken agreement, both girls slowly stepped towards eachother from opposite ends of the high school football field. the silent, blnak scoreboard loomed sullnely behind Sierra's wind-blown hair.
a wave of whispers srolled across the wide-eyed crowd. the rivals stopped at the center, only 20 feet apart. May's eyes marrowed as she reached behind her back. Sierra's arm tensed behind her own. in a flourish, they both whipped out golden, gleaming banjos of the rarest woods and finest strings. the air hung still and the audience hushed. the contenders were still and ready. it was only them and the banjos. May broke the silence with the first slow, challenging notes. Sierra answered back, accepting the challenge. back and forth, introductions passed, and they were off! a furious battle of fast music and flying hands was set before the gaping crowd. it was neck and neck until resistance and restraint showed on May's sweating face. When Sierra saw the weekness, she knew she had won, but did not ease up. May tried as she mihgt, but could not pull it off. she fell to her knees in defeat. the music stopped. the crowd held its breath. May set her banjo at Sierra's feet. Sierra lept into the air and the crowd roared. May was forgotten. the duel of the banjos was over.
story info:

this li'l bit is about two of my friends (whose names have been changed). sierra's dad plays the banjos and she complains about it, so in 8th grade i wrote a thing about banjos for some stupid class thing. but i like it.
