EVANGELINE : A Love Story A Storyline by Nike Evangeline was a young angel who is curious to learn about humans. One day, she was assinged to be the Guardian Angel of a young seven year old boy, whose name is, ironically, Angel. But as she continued to watch over her charge, she hopelessly began to fall in love with him. She asked one of the higher Guardians to allow her to become Human so that she’d be able to touch and feel him, since angels live on a much different plane of existence from humans, but she was refused. Disappointed and dejected, Evangeline decided to follow her heart instead and allowed herself to Fall. And because of this, the Powers That Be decided to punish her by stripping all of her angelic powers but her wings would remain visible to anyone who sees her. Upon reaching Earth, she was captured by a traveling carnival where she was placed into a cage as a sideshow freak. There she met two angels who have roamed Earth far longer than she had but unfortunately were only visible to her. One was Lucifer, the first Fallen Angel who has grown tired of Hell and decided to wander around Earth instead. While the other was Azrael, the Angel of death who walks on Eath and whose duty is to take thelives of every mortal thing when its time to die. Lucifer is, at first, amused by hersituation, but eventually he pities her. He advises her to return to Heaven and give up on her futle quest. (Lucifer: Forget aboiut him and go back to where you came from, you child. Humans are inferior creatures. They do not know, nor could they understand, what it is to love.) But Azrael was curious and asks why did she decide to Fall when she could always be with her charge if she had just remained as his Guardian. But Evangeline refuses to listen to them. (Evangeline: Do you need a reason to see the one you love? I just wanted to see him, that’s all. I just wanted him to know me and find out if he could also love me. Do you need a reason for that?) Azrael leaves her, wondering about about Evangeline’s words. (Azrael: I don’t know. As Death, I canot and I don’t dare to love.) One day, Evangeline was again visited by Azrael, who told her of a way in which she could get rid of her wings. She must give every passerby a feather from her wings. But she could only give one person one feather because upon recieving a feather that person would no longer see her wings. And she shouldn’t give away her last feather, the gold-colored one, for that contained her life. (Azrael: Lose it and you shall die and disappear forever like the morning mist.) Evangeline follows Azrael’s advice, until she no longer has any wings but still keeps her last feather. Soon the carnival owner dies and he gives all his money to Evangeline and frees her to find her love. She travels every city and province, searching for her love, but is always a step too late behind him. Thirty years have passed, Evangeline is a nurse, caring for the sick in a government hospital, when Azrael appears again to her and leads her to the room of a man who lay comatose due to a car accident. Evangeline recognizes the man as Angel, the seven year old boy who had been her charge. Death then tells her that he has grown up to be a good husband and father to his wife and two young kids. Evangeline asks Azrael if if she was going to take him now. Azrael hesitates and says she isn’t sure but knows that she must take one life in this hospital and the man was a likely candidate. Evangeline asks Azrael to leave. Azrael complies but before leaving, she glances back at Evangeline and reminds her that she still has her own life ahead of her and that she should not waste it all on one person because sooner or later that person would leave this life anyway. Then after saying that, Death leaves the room. Alone, Evangeline sits down beside the man. She takes the man’s hand and kisses it. The man then murmurs as if in a dream. (Angel: Evangeline, where have you been…?) And upon saying that, he lapses back into his coma again. Evangeline looks up, tears shining in her eyes, happy because the man that she had sacrificed everything for had recognized her but sad that he would die soon if she didn’t make a choice. (Evangeline: Oh, Lord, thank you…) She kisses the man on the forehead and the room suddenly fills up with white mist. A beam of light from heaven enters the room through the open window and makes the mist vanish. Later that day, the door of the room opened and the man’s wife and two kids stepped inside. They were happy to learn than the man had miraculously woken up from his come without any complications. Angel wakes up from the noise and whispers. (Angel: Evangeline…) The wife looks at him strangely and asks, (Wife: Who’s Evangeline? One of the nurses?) The man blinks and looks around, seemingly confused. (Angel: I don’t know…) One of the kids notices something in his father’s hand and draws attention to it. (Kid: Hey, Dad, what’s that you got?) The man holds it up and they see it was a feather. A small white feather that resembled a dove’s. Outside the room, in the hallway, Azrael listens to their conversation and smiles. Then she makes her way to a nearby corridor where she sees Lucifer standing there, leaning against the wall with his arms crossed. (Lucifer: You know something, Azrael? If I didn’t know better, I’d think you had something to do with that young one’s decision.) Azrael smiles mysteriously. (Azrael: But she made her choice, Luci. Just as you had done when you left Heaven a long time ago. And with that, Azrael walks past by Lucifer but before she can leave, the other angel speaks up again. (Lucifer: What are you going to do now?) The question causes Azrael to stop n her tracks and she replies in a quiet voice. (Azrael: I am Azrael, the angel of death, and I still have to take one more life in this hospital.) Lucifer looks at her with pity in his eyes. (Lucifer: Don’t you ever get tired of what you do?) Azrael looks at him over her shoulder. (Azrael: Sometimes. But tell me, Lucifer, who can love Death?) And with that, she walks away, leaving Lucifer alone, standing in the corridor. Later, we see Azrael leading a young boy to a tunnel filled with a bright white light. At the background, we hear the sounds of a mother wailing for her lost child. The wails slowly fade as Azrael and the boy slowly walk hand in hand towards the tunnel. (The boy: Where are we going? Are you taking me to Heaven? Azrael nods and smiles mysteriously. The boy: Isn’t that where angels live? Azrael: Some of them, anyway. The boy : I like angels. Mom told me that each of us have an angel who watches over us since birth. Azrael suddenly smiles and turns to face the boy: Hey, do you want to hear a story about an angel that I once knew? The boy looks at Azrael and nods. Azrael smiles again at the boy: Then let me tell you the story of Evangeline, an angel who gave up Heaven to find her love….) The scene then changes to what seemed to be an old carnival site. In the center, we see an old empty birdcage, filled with cobwebs due to age. Then fade to black.
