Clan MacMullin

Clan MacMullin is believed to have descended from the Buchanan Clan through Methlan a Buchanan Chief.  The surname MacMullin emerged as a clan in Agyllshire and was recorded as a family of great antiquity seated with manor and estates there.

The MacMullin surname is believed to be one of the many spelling variations.  The surname was also spelt MacMillan, MacMullan, MacMullen, McMullen, McMullan, MacGhille Mhaolain (Gaelic for son of the bald one). The different spelling sometimes indicated a religion or clan loyalty to a branch or chieftain and sometimes the different spelling occurred even between fathers and sons.  It wasn’t uncommon to be born with one spelling, marry with a second variation of it and have a third variation upon their headstone. The MacMullin Clan is believed to have come to North America about 300 years ago.  They settled in Virginia, the Carolinas, Ottawa Valley and Pictou, NS. The MacMullin Crest is a dexter and a sinister hand issuing from the wreath grasping and brandishing aloft a two handed sword Proper and contains the family motto - Miseris Succurrere Disco – I learn to succor the distressed.
